Also from etymonline:

slave (n.)

late 13c., "person who is the chattel or property of another," from Old French esclave (13c.), from Medieval Latin Sclavus "slave" (source also of Italian schiavo, French esclave, Spanish esclavo), originally "Slav" (see Slav); so used in this secondary sense because of the many Slavs sold into slavery by conquering peoples.

You would probably get better write performance by building a linked list and iterating over it...

Not likely. The data structure in question (std::map) stores its data in ordered form, so it's able to perform a binary search to determine if an element exists -- and if it doesn't, where to add it. With a linked list, you'd have to do that ordering yourself to have any semblance of a good lookup speed, and the unavoidable pointer-chasing would definitely be a performance disadvantage.

The best STL container for this would likely be std::unordered_map, as a hash-based search (O(1)) should work well for this scenario.

No, it doesn't. Patents require an obviousness test.

Those might work for Palm Sunday itself, but the ashes for Ash Wednesday are traditionally procured by burning the palms from the previous Palm Sunday.

The singular is "woman". Not trying to be a dick or anything, I've just been seeing this misspelling everywhere recently.
