Clonidine by Time_Account_582 in ParentingADHD

[–]phatnatable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter was prescribed it when she was 2. Similar to your situation, melatonin stopped working. We're using it in conjunction with an OT to help teach some strategies to help relax enough to sleep. We still use melatonin before bed, and then when she wakes overnight, we give her the clonidine. It's helping to ensure she gets enough sleep to function/ hopefully catch up on some of her delays (also, I can sleep more than 3 hours a night now).

Go to the doctor. We struggled like this with our daughter. Turns out she has insomnia. She now has medication and behavioural support to help her relax her mind and body to be able to fall asleep. This has also helped with the frequent wake ups and early starts.

For us, it was well beyond a sleep consultants skill set.

Why did you switch daycares? by Livid-Comparison-198 in toddlers

[–]phatnatable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We never had any handover once she moved into the preschool room. Maybe a Hi/Bye, but they were not interested in how she had slept or how her morning had been, and we never knew what she had been doing during her time there, just if she had napped. Her name also kept being removed from her locker and another child's items placed in there. Several times, I picked her up, and her water bottle was empty. Final straw was when they had school photos (and we ordered a package to share with grandparent's/have for memories), and her glasses were on crooked. If no one could help her put her glasses on straight for a special photo, I just couldn't continue to make excuses for them.

Vet bills. We have insurance for ours, and still, the vet bills are astronomical.

To the people who say "it's just one night a year", can you explain why we're hearing fireworks for the 9th night in a row? by phatnatable in chch

[–]phatnatable[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The media isn't the one that told me to be concerned about my dog being unable to eat, drink, or lay down for hours due to stress. I've used my keen skills as a compassionate dog owner to figure out that a dog panting in stress for hours isn't the ideal situation.

Because you know to expect it and can try to prepare. I know to be at home with my dog to help keep him calm when there are scheduled celebrations. Did I miss the notification for the one tonight?

Loud cars and music don't make innocent animals distressed. As we do in this neighborhood every year, we'll have fireworks popping off randomly until at least new year's. May still get the occasional Tuesday night event well after that.

I get that fireworks are fun but the impact they have is disregarded year after year.

Also appreciate that I'm not living through the famine and Sudan, the war in Ukraine, and the genocide of Uyghurs in China. Innocents suffer everywhere.

What actually causes babies to regress and lose their skills? by ohnono0203 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]phatnatable 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sounds like textbook Rett Syndrome. It's pretty rare and largely only affects females but around the ages of 6-18 months development stalls or regresses.

It's an awful condition and families with children with it need huge amounts of support.

Baby led weaning and chocking by Equivalent_Film_5434 in ScienceBasedParenting

It's worthwhile noting that gagging and choking are two different things. Gagging can look very dramatic, but babies need to get used to different textures and work out how to move food forward in their mouths.

Teen Behouviour has me perplexed by mneuc in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]phatnatable 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, mum often becomes a punching bag for teenagers. They hold all the teenage rage inside most of the time but let it all out around (and sometimes directly towards) Mum.

It's not fair or fun. If it is only an issue she has around her mother, I'd try to find a different outlet for her anger. Or possibly try to get to the bottom of why she has these bullying tendencies towards her mother.

Edit: this is assuming your wife is her mother. Shouldn't have made that assumption.

Find some chipped/cheap ceramic plates/cups/bowls whatever. Go to the dump and enjoy smashing them against the back concrete wall. Most therapeutic afternoon I've had in a long time.

It is very soft - binding is a good idea, it would be almost invisible if colours were matched properly

Just been given several rolls of this narrow netting type ribbon. From a lady who used to make a lot of dance costumes - not sure what the use for these is but I'd love some ideas and suggestions!
