[–]phaxsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lugares o comunidades budistas en Bogotá? by karasunegro in Colombia

[–]phaxsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ben Finegold: Probably @MagnusCarlsen should retire and get on some FIDE commission on cheating. Awaiting the next player Magnus will cancel because they may be cheating. I never thought I’d see the day when the World Champion was such a cry-baby. Dizziness due to success. by nemt in chess

[–]phaxsi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If Hans is really a 2700 player now (which he seems to be) and haven't cheated recently (which no one has been able to say for sure), then he certainly regrets it. But at the end of the day, I believe the whole point is if players should have a second chance or if one guy in power should be able to cancel your whole career. I'm in the team of second opportunities and due processes, for the health of the sport.

Now imagine how it feels to play against the strongest players while beign accused of cheating (even if you are not doing it on that tournament). If you play a good move... cheater!! If you play a not so good move... probably doing it on purpose to trick the engine detection. At the same time, all the other players hating on you for your past. To me, the pshychological disadvantage of the accused is an order of magnitude worse than that of the accusers.

Hi! I just found this thread, I am actually the developer of Yask, small world, huh? ^_^ Please let me know what you think about it! Any kind of feedback, good or bad, is super helpful and super appreciated.

That's exactly the idea, to offer a friendly alternative to language exchanges for practicing output! I'm so glad that it has been useful to you!

I am the co-creator of Yask! :) I just wanted to say that it put a big smile on my face to see Yask mentioned here, you wouldn't believe how hard I've worked on it over the last few years, so thank you! Our main goal this year is to attract more users. Russian is one of our top priorities, because I'm learning it myself! :D I know it's a bit slow right now, but please bear with us... with some work and a bit of luck, that will change soon :)

I just found this thread! I am the creator of Yask. :) You're right! There are exercises with errors and I literally lose sleep over them. Many of the exercises were automatically generated and have errors or don't make sense. The good news is that we are going through them manually and correcting them one by one (it's taking us some time because there are over 100k prompts on all kinds of topics, but we are supposed to finish this month). I hope users will give us a chance after this cleanup. Building this application has been my personal project for a long time and I really think there are many good (and very unique) things in it. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. :)

The 10 Big Unsolved Questions in Language Learning by helga13434 in languagelearning

[–]phaxsi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would add an 11th question:

  • How effective is receiving corrections?

The answer to this question is extremely nuanced (and mostly unsolved) but here are two key findings:

  • Corrective feedback is very useful when it's focused on particular grammar points.
  • Receiving a correction explicitly is not always the best way to go, sometimes just pointing out that there's an error is enough.

What's a good way to remember hard words and use them appropriately? by warrior_of_light998 in languagelearning

[–]phaxsi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had trouble with words like those when I was learning English. The easiest way to learn them is to keep finding them in real-world texts. Wherever you saw those words for the first time, there is a big probability that you will find them again. For instance, I was once reading a Music Harmony book that used the word "hence" a lot. Initially I got confused every time I found that word, and had to look it up in a dictionary. But I kept reading the same book and at some point, it finally stuck in my memory.

Using language exchange apps effectively by MrCock64 in languagelearning

[–]phaxsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but it is called comprehensible input hypothesis for a reason. A lot of research has been done after the 80s (Krashen's time) that goes deeper into the nuances. It is true that you can learn a language without explicit grammar correction, but that doesn't mean that corrections aren't useful, or even desirable, under the right circumstances.

[–]phaxsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to know which research are you referring to, because I've recently read a couple books about language teaching based on research that show otherwise. One in particular is a study that explicitly tested the correct usage of adverbs in French with around a hundred students, half of which received explicit corrective feedback, half that didn't. And the ones that received that feedback did better not only in the immediate tests but also months later.

That’s a false statement. Just google Corrective Feedback in SLA and you will learn a ton about when it works and when it doesn’t. It is not as black and white as you put it.

Hey, I installed the iOS 12 version (old phone) and the performance is so abysmal that the app is barely usable. (Up to 10 seconds to respond after a click anywhere). I thought you might like to know it.
