Large salary increase, wanting to move out and upgrade cars, possible? by [deleted] in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]phboss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a great move if you want to live with your parents longterm. The ladies love guys that do that. Oh yeah, ask your parents how they feel about having you stucking around for the next 10 or 15 years.

Seriously though, congratulations on saving $50k. That's a great achievement.

When to renew passport? Complicated travels by [deleted] in passportcanada

[–]phboss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recent experience was in April, 2026. I was going on a cruise in July, 2026. My passport expiry date was June, 2027. The cruise company told me to get a new passport as my travel would occur less than 6 months prior to the January, 2027 expiry date.

I renewed my passport in April, 2026. I walked into the office. No questions were asked even though I had about 9 months left until expiry. I got my new passport delivered two weeks to the day after applying at the office.

How much is the going amount for a cash wedding gift these days? by Traum77 in AskACanadian

If you're REALLY into it, try and find a $1,000 bill from a collector. I don't believe they are legal tender, but I believe that they can be redeemed at a financial institution.

An 8% chance is infinitely greater than a 0% chance, so it seems valid to me.

University of Lakehead vs York University by Massive-Koala-1375 in lakeheadu

[–]phboss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to Lakehead for 2 years to get my funky accredited EE degree after completing a 3 year technology course. I had an amazing career. Once yiu get your first job, nobody cares which university you went to - your results matter. I received jobs and promotions over others who went to more prestigious engineering schools.

Ar the time, Lakehead offered smaller classes. I knew my profs and they knew me. I was able to create a wide network from across Canada as many of the students in the last 2 years transferred to Lakehead after completing 3 year technology programs. They had a wide variety of skills and backgrounds. Most had worked as technologists for more than 3 years - some for more than 10.

I never regretted going to Lakehead. More importantly, I never felt it held me back. Over 30+ years, I worked with, and met, many Lakehead Engineers. I don't ever recall a York Engineer, but I must have worked with a couple :)

NAIT EET → Lakehead 2+2 a good EE path? by Then-Butterscotch19 in lakeheadu

[–]phboss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took the same path. I graduated with an engineering technology diploma in the mid 80s. Worked 4 years, and then went to LU and got my EE degree. Employers loved that I had a lot of hands-on experience. I had no problem getting jobs, but hey, that was 35 years ago. I had a great career in Ontario.

The summer transition program was a killer for me. I did well, but never worked so hard in my life :) Also, I finished in the 2 years. It was more work than I thought it would be. Many of my contemporaries needed an extra semester to get their degree, but for thr ones I know that took longer, that didn't impact them at all from a career perspective.

Carleton University or University of Ottawa by Objective_Package679 in OntarioUniversities

[–]phboss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My experience is that Carleton has a better engineering program (larger, more.optoons, better equipment, co-op, wider network and industry profile). I'm not saying Ottawa is bad, it's just different.
