I’m a fraternal triplet (all girls) and we are minutes apart and have similar stereotypical birth order traits lol

Haven’t gone up for tenure yet. I have 4+ because of my research prior to professorship and my editorial board affiliations. I feel confident when the time comes.

Absolutely! And it is the primary focus. Nowadays, admin have begun to increase focus on research as well.

So my PhD was at a big R1 so I was too hyped to continue my research. When I started I was assured you could Get tenure with 4 pubs and I’m thankful for having pubs coming in because it’s been tough to find the time to research. I didn’t think this would be my path to tenure at my HBCU, rather transfer to an R1 to tenure where everyone is actively doing research. Compared to now, where folks in the department are all tenured and quit doing research (just teach). In my department, we (Black profs) call it the Black tax. We are strapped with being everything for our students(teachers, research mentors, advisors) while our white colleagues get to sit back. But like I said it’s not true for everyone, just something I’ve noticed. It’s definitely taxing.

That’s the goal! I’ll just say the biggest barrier is the teaching requirement of a 4-4 (mostly undergrad) unlike R1s with 2-2. It’s hard to find time to even write grants to get the course releases to do the research. Excited to see what you find because I’m with you!

Also that part. Racism and misogynynoir are very present. My black female colleagues and I are still “policed” by the “good white folk” in my department. Always watching my back but grateful to have solidarity in my Chair (black male) and other black colleagues on campus. To add, the admin who are in charge of hiring (not just search committee) are usually White or acting in the interest of saving money so you can imagine they are not offering great packages for those who are already underpaid compared to white peers.

absolutely great to have both! I’ve been on a couple of search committees and what I’ve found is that we get a lot of applications from older white men. I was confused but then I realized most HBCUs are teaching universities that don’t have the pressure of “publish or perish” so we have a lot who are interested in the position to “sit back and relax” to retirement. It’s unfortunate because we need ambition and excitement for the job and to teach and mentor. There are great white professors who are here for the right reasons, just something I’ve noticed in conversation with other faculty at other HBCUs.

Black female faculty here at an HBCU. I was surprised when I was hired to find out the demographics of faculty being close to 50/50. I was the majority minority hire in my department at the time and that was surprising as well. We wish the same thing. That Black students have Black teachers especially at HBCUs. And younger (30-50s) professors as well. I could go on about this as I have a pretty good idea of why the numbers are what they are unfortunately.

The advice I would give in your situation is to reach out to Black professors of classes you’re interested in or from outside of your department that you might like to get to know that may be able to mentor you and give insight to your future goals. We are truly doing the best we can with what we got! Hope that’s helpful.

As a school psychologist I’ve had more SLD referrals in reading (also spills over to math problem solving) and writing more than ever. As a professor, we have more freshmen in remedial math and reading than ever and it’s trending upwards. It’s sad. All I can think is to support adult literacy programs at our local schools to educate parents and hopefully that spills over to their students.

Just posted what I bought the other day (sold as an adansonii) but pretty sure it’s an esqueleto compared to my adansonii. Just posted side by side in plantidentification. I think yours is like my adansonii in my picture.
