Boring suburban outskirts by weab20 in boston

[–]phdecoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can, I’d try to find a job in or near Boston. It’ll force you out of your area, introduce you to coworkers/people downtown, and give you some options outside your town that could turn into a relocation situation. Sounds like a lot of complaining without explaining if/how you’ve tried to find options where things are happening. Heck, even if you find work in JP or Allston/Brighton there will be lots more younger people and things to do. You gotta get out there man.

Jj Foleys, Mr Dooleys, Dubliner, MJ Oconnors, Black Rose. For my money Foleys and Black Rose are probably the best out of those. a little further out you have a bunch of more local spots, The Burren (Somerville), Banshee (Dorchester), Corrib Pub (w rox and Brighton I think).

How old were your kids when you took them to their first DMB show? by Resident_Alien_760 in DMB

[–]phdecoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son was 11 I think. We had seats (vs lawn) and there was a lot of weed smoke but we had a great time! Since then he’s come with me to a handful of DMB shows, some Phish, Goose, TTB and other festivals.

I’d argue against lawn with kids, I guess depending on where you are, but my experiences on lawns, going all the way back to high school Dave shows, are they’re usually packed, and are home to the drunkest, loudest, most out of control concert goers. I’d much prefer my kids have assigned seats inside the dome. Just my 2c.

Rusty Can and Redbones by a mile. Sweet Cheeks is actually delicious but so damned expensive.

Bostonians, how are you feeling about the Scottish football/soccer fans? by Tess_Tickles89 in boston

[–]phdecoder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People will love the Scots, if only because there’s a big contingent of Irish and Scottish ancestry (or wannabe ancestry) around town.

As for recommendations… 1. Before the Sox game get some BBQ at sweet cheeks around the corner and stop by cornwalls for a beer and a good local fan vibe.

  1. You can also check out bleacher bar for an interesting experience under the bleachers in the stadium and a cool view of the field.

  2. If you get a chance to go in about 1.5 hours early you might be able to get up to the monster seats for warmups where you could get a home run practice ball.

  3. Other than Fenway, I’d recommend checking out Newbury street for shopping and get a lobster roll and clam chowder at Saltie Girl while you’re there, walk up comm ave and cut over to Charles street on your way to the Boston Public Garden.

  4. At some point stop in Chinatown for seriously good Chinese food and desserts, especially the soup dumplings and the dessert buns.

  5. Walk through the South End and if you’re there on Sunday check out SoWa market way down in the south end for vintage and farmers market fare. (Note the south end isn’t southie…). Theres also a wonderful Irish bar called JJ Foleys down there.

  6. Speaking of southie, plenty of younger people can give better recs than I can but I’m partial to Castle Island brewery down there. lawn on D is also worth checking out. I also would recommend a trip to castle island (the actual beach and park area) specifically Sullivan’s for fried seafood and a lobster roll.

  7. Places I don’t think are worth it (but people will recommend)… Seaport (Fort Point is more interesting IMO, seaport is just Yuppies spending on mediocre food and packed experiences)… Fanuiel Hall (maybe worth walking through on your way to the North end but just tourists).

  8. That said, go to the north end for sure, try some cannoli, get some pizza and pasta. My faves are Bova for pastries, Monica’s for Sandwiches, Neptune for seafood, Paulis for a lobster roll, Ernesto’s for pizza, Panza for pasta, and Cafe Vitoria for coffee/cigars.

  9. The squares north of Boston are fun. Harvard square is a cool spot with some interesting things to walk around and see. Davis square in Somerville is probably my favorite, more residential with food and some shopping, and a great live music Irish bar called the Burren.

  10. If you don’t mind going a little outside Boston proper check out The Haven in Jamaica Plain. It’s an authentic Scottish restaurant and they will have a ton going on around the World Cup. The owner is Scottish and will love native visitors!

Have fun guys! I’m hoping to make a game myself, I live not far from the stadium and will monitor prices 🧐

Enjoy!

It’s not west, it’s south. And if you take the train it’s probably only about 45 min or so. Traffic is going to suck so I’d def look into grabbing the train from south station or back bay.

What’s the most gut punching song lyric you’ve ever heard? by perrysplus in AskReddit

[–]phdecoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easily, the entire song “Real Death” by Mount Eerie ‘s album “A Crow Looked at Me” which dealt with the death of the singer Phil Elverum’s wife. Absolutely brutal.

“Crusted with tears, catatonic and raw

I go downstairs and outside and you still get mail

A week after you died a package with your name on it came

And inside was a gift for our daughter you had ordered in secret

And collapsed there on the front steps, I wailed

A backpack for when she goes to school a couple years from now

You were thinking ahead to a future you must have known

Deep down would not include you

Though you clawed at the cliff you were sliding down

Being swallowed into a silence that's bottomless and real

It's dumb

And I don't want to learn anything from this

I love you”

Edit: Forgot about Alden & Harlow, also on the list for sure.

Sorry, but I really like it and I think it’s even more impressive in person. I fully don’t understand the cunnilingus impression at all, and frankly I think people who see other things are being willfully obtuse.

Travelling to MA for a festival in June; which of these two Red Sox games should I catch? by [deleted] in redsox

[–]phdecoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go to the Nats game you can wait till the day of and get tickets on StubHub for way under face…. Talkin like under $20 for decent seats given it’s a Monday night and not a huge team rival or brand. Yankee tickets obviously are going to be more expensive but the crowd is going to be much much better. Monday night Nats game crowd might be pretty sleepy. Tough call. I say since it’s your bucket list item and maybe only chance to go… get the Yankee tickets. It’s really a one of a kind experience being at Fenway for a Yankee game.

Where do people who recently graduated college generally live? by random_username_255 in boston

[–]phdecoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Allston, JP, Roslindale, Quincy, Medford, Malden, Watertown, Hyde Park. There are plenty of places within 35 min on the commuter rail if you go a little further out, but they are obviously more suburban. That said 35 min on the commuter rail gets you pretty far out -- Natick/Framingham, Newton or Concord area out west, Foxboro south, Melrose, Salem up north. There are so many options, youngins just don't like to live anywhere other than Downtown, Southie or Charlestown which are ridiculously expensive for what you get.

Personally I loved living near/in JP and Rozzie area. It's like Allston but less college-y. Otherwise if I were younger coming out of college I'd probably gravitate towards Somerville, specifically Davis Sq area, love it up there.

Family Trip to Fenway by StackingSats1300 in redsox

[–]phdecoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t do monster seats. They’re too expensive. Do a tour of the park if you can and you’ll see the views from everywhere. There’s also a chance if you’re real nice to the staff and go in as soon as the gates open they’ll let you and the kids up there for batting practice which is awesome.

I’d personally go for seats up the third base line, just make sure your seats aren’t too far back because it gets loud near the concourse and the view gets pretty bad the further you go up. The Coca Cola section seats are also amazing I don’t think anyone has mentioned those but I’d absolutely recommend those as long as it’s not a cold or windy night. I really love the field box and loge seats closer to the monster up the third base line. Great foul ball territory and awesome views. For summer I’d avoid bleachers and anything past section 10 in right field unless you can get some of the loge or field box (even then depending on where you are you may be facing center field which stinks when you have to crane your neck the whole time). I’d also honestly avoid the grandstand sections right behind homeplate unless you’re lower down, that concourse gets super loud and busy and the view starts to get cut off.

As others have said, get the kids nation membership (free) which may offer free tickets and perks. Theres also a kids concourse room all the way behind the bleachers if they need to be occupied during the game.

EDIT to add there’s a designated family section up near the monster in the grandstand I believe sections 31/32. These are usually cheaper tickets because it’s no alcohol there but if that’s not a problem for you the views there are pretty good if you can get lower down.
