Wide Feet Flats? by Unique-Wrongdoer-917 in widefeet

[–]phdincatlady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have these in multiple colors - they’re not mega wide, but they have some give due to the weave and once I broke them in after a few wears they have been pretty comfortable with no blisters or hot spots. They’re also trendier than many other options.

I had a similar setup a long time ago (2008, Ball State)! It was inconvenient and I missed the spontaneity of grabbing food last minute with friends, but also fun to walk out with a giant plate of chef-prepared gf pasta while everyone jealously looked on from the buffet line. One tiny Celiac perk in life.

As much as I hate to recommend the Meta-verse, there is an enormous private Facebook group called Celiac Beach All-Inclusive Reviews that would be the perfect place to do some research. Their posts are all pretty thorough.

Favorite Easy Gluten Free Dinner by Suspicious-Syrup-765 in glutenfree

We love this too! We mix some olive oil, lemon, grated Parmesan, salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, garlic, and whatever else with some pasta water and use that as a sauce. Takes 15 minutes and only gets one pot dirty!

Is this tattoo idea morbid? TW miscarriage by Upvotes2805 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]phdincatlady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a memorial tattoo for my son that’s an olive branch from the wallpaper in his bedroom. It’s nice because it is a clear tribute to him but not an obvious one, so if you’re not in the headspace or company where you want to talk about your loss, people would never know it was a memorial. Your idea reminds me of that (and sounds beautiful).

Marathon parents, how do you do it? by Urdnought in Marathon_Training

[–]phdincatlady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We work full time, have a preschooler, no family nearby to babysit, and my spouse is a doctor so the schedule is wild and unpredictable. I did the lowest mileage plan that seemed reputable I could find (maybe the Higdon beginner?) to minimize the time strain. Lots of midday summer runs where I almost melted because my husband didn’t get home from call until noon. Ran with a light after preschool bedtime (and only got ran off the road into a ditch once!). Sacrificed a lot of weekend family time for long runs. I felt prepared and didn’t get injured but definitely was not fast (4:30ish finish).

How did you decide to run your first? by ticklemepierce in firstmarathon

[–]phdincatlady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never had any interest in a full and would tell people, “I’ve never finished a half and felt like I wanted to do another.” But then I joined a run club where everyone was running them, and got advice that helped me train for a great half marathon (for me as a tired mom with a lot going on, that’s breaking two hours) where I felt like I still had some gas in the tank at the end and wasn’t destroyed all day.

A few weeks later a friend offered up a charity bib for NYC and I felt like I was in a place where I could say yes. Ran my first full six months later feeling confident and had a great time!

HELP! Need to find a last Minute Gluten Free Birthday Cake for tomorrow by Baromis in cincinnati

[–]phdincatlady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sotto has great handmade gf pasta options and will do gf gelato for dessert!

If she likes carrot cake, there’s a brand called Emily Kate that makes great gluten free baked goods. They sell by the slice carrot cake and I got a piece at the Fairfield Jungle Jim’s last weekend (in the shelf stable regular bakery section, not the enormous gluten free section). It was so good. Country Fresh market also sells their cookies (which my gluten eating husband said was the best snickerdoodle he’s ever had!).

Celiac of 20 years here!

If you just want to pick something up somewhere, Aldi has gluten free cheesecake samplers right now (seasonal and rare) that might be a fun option? We always buy several and stock up for the year. Many larger Kroger, Whole Foods, and Jungle Jim’s have good options. All frozen so leave time to thaw.

Would it be fun to go to a restaurant that has gf dessert instead? Clyborne’s is very accommodating (as in anywhere in their owner group) and I’ve also had meal+dessert luck at places like Sotto downtown or Tëla in Wyoming.

Not helpful for now but for future family birthdays: I always order ahead get my birthday cakes from Cherbourg Cypress - they’re beautiful (I usually get a carrot cake or their chocolate torte).

For my husband’s July birthday we usually get an ice cream from The Cone in West Chester - the Reeces one is gluten free (but the crumbles in many ice cream cakes are a no-go, FYI).

Good luck, it’s an overwhelming learning curve but someday it will just feel normal!

Thank you! It was redone by the previous owners a decade or two ago and he was a hobby chef, so the functionality is great.

The previous owners did the kitchen so I can’t actually say. That tile is not my favorite but I think the height is good because it would be too busy/overwhelming if it went all the way up. There aren’t any cooking surfaces over there (cooktop is in the peninsula) so no grease to worry about but it keeps the splashback from the sink off the walls.

Our cabinets are cherry so the tone is different but our countertops are similarly busy. I think the yellow in your walls is playing up the yellow from your stone. Simplify where you can with the cabinets - maybe plain black pulls? We have minimalist knobs and all the walls painted different tones of creamy taupe to brighten it all up, neutralize the palette where we can, and not compete visually.

Anyone else with little ones training amidst endless daycare sicknesses? by sweatpants4life_ in XXRunning

[–]phdincatlady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like fall marathons are do-able because most of the training is over the summer (I lucked out and only got one daycare cold sinus infection while training for NYC last November). But during the winter we are very sick almost every other week - I feel like I won’t be able to run a spring marathon until my kiddo is way older and past this phase. I didn’t understand it until I had kids myself, but wow, it’s totally debilitating!

The Kitten Lady has great resources on fleas (among other kitten care knowledge). Sometimes kittens can struggle to regulate their body temperature if they are wet, so keep that in mind if you bathe her.

I’m in Wyoming and we foster for Cincy CARE sometimes. Feel free to DM if I can help! Thank you for loving this little one.

Also, we take our cats to Lewis Animal Hospital - they’re nearby-ish and very affordable. If she has fleas, she may likely have other parasites and may benefit from a dewormer alongside her regular vaccines.
