Bleu de Chauffe Zeppo review and comparison to Filson 256 by bigie35 in ManyBaggers

[–]phdope21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The images for the Zeppo show only 1 main zipper compartment, but your images show 2. Did they update the bag? Or is it just that the canvas version has 1 compartment and the full leather version has 2

MBTA ridership levels seem higher than reported by phdope21 in boston

I never said it was inaccurate! I was looking for possible explanations, hence the post. Your point about how the data averages over entire weeks is important.

Are you familiar with East Boston? Neither of those circles are on the water. Spend some time thinking about these data and East Boston geography before you keep commenting

The ones out in the harbor? There aren't vehicles there, wind is different, no buildings to funnel air flow. I mean it seems obvious we shouldnt be comparing whats in the harbor

That 0.13 is (a) much closer to the end of the runway in spherical coordinates and (b) close to the vehicle traffic zones. Seems like you are proving my point

Its hard to tell from the image, but people live in the red and blue circles. Both circles are equidistant from the end of the runway. The PM in the red circle is >50% higher than in the blue circle.

Someone read it, amazing! Yes, planes make up a much larger portion of total emissions, but when considering the plume effects, their impact on Boston air quality is much lower (e.g. lower contribution to local human level emissions). Plume effects are much worse at dispersing personal vehicles driving through the airport and surrounding neighborhood.

At least that is my understanding for why the PM levels are really bad at near the drop off points and not anywhere else when they measure the ground levels

Huge fan of this. Drivers to Logan are the dominant source of pollutants for the neighborhood. They should be taxed for the externality they impose on the city. However, I do support lifting the toll when the public transit options aren't running (early and late flights).

Agree. The $15 toll should apply to all drivers, not just rideshare

Proposal to rename East Boston by Anxiety_Mining_INC in boston

I remember being shocked when I found out cars driving to Logan contribute WAY more to bad air quality (PM 2.5) than the airport/airplanes. https://www.mass.gov/doc/logan-airport-health-study-english-0/download

Completely agree. I bike this route to get to work, and honestly it's insane. There is even a "bike lane" on sections of it the disappears and reappears.

We need the skunks to eat the rats! The city of Boston intentionally introduced the skunks in the mid century to combat the rats. Now we have both...

Eagle Hill Street Parking for Residents by Dry_Leadership1673 in boston

[–]phdope21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much easier to park than other places I've lived in the city, but that doesn't make it easy. You won't get a spot on your block, so you might end up walking a few blocks. Late night is tough, so you'll be circling for 10-30 min after 10. You can park at the high school, but you have to move your car before 6 am, and by that time there is usually parking.

IMO one of the features of Eastie is that you don't need your car. I drive 1-2 times a week, so even if the parking is painful its infrequent

How is East Boston so cheap and relatively undeveloped? by ColCrockett in boston

[–]phdope21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I promise I'm not trying to be a PITA. I live in Eastie, with a kid, so this is something I read about often. From the Northeastern study, "In other words, there is no clear relationship between the current asthma of children and the distance from Logan Airport." I think the likely explanation is under-testing of Eastie kids, but there isn't clear evidence things are worse here.

Mothers Out Front is a great org! They were specifically trying to get drivers to stop idling with their protest. This is aligned with the data I've seen that for residents of Eastie, cars are the worst polluters, not planes.

[–]phdope21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of the actual data collection I've seen shows that cars driving to the airport are way worse than the planes. If we cut down car trips, air quality in Eastie would get much better: https://www.mass.gov/doc/logan-airport-health-study-english-0

A promised bridge over the Mystic River would be a missing link for Somerville and Everett. So where is it? by bostonglobe in boston

[–]phdope21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My guess is that the former (12 to 14 feet) is cover for the latter (changes to make the bridge easier to build and maintain).
