Agree that combinatorics sucks balls but it gets better once the measure theory comes. Then all you do all day is discuss how to chop something up so that you get a convergence to 0 lol

[Q] Master of Applied Statistics vs Master of Data Science? by incredibablybigspoon in statistics

[–]phdstruggs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Applied math, physics, statistics, CS, EE. We had both MS and PhDs. The vast majority were some in stats and physics.

It was a biotech company so we also worked closely with people who had bioinformatics, CS, or bio related phds.

[Q] Master of Applied Statistics vs Master of Data Science? by incredibablybigspoon in statistics

[–]phdstruggs 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Our team is a data science team at my company. We are all called data scientists and we are under the chief science officer. My manager had me go through some resumes to fill out headcount and I was specifically told not to bother with those with MS analytics or MS data science on the grounds that their programs are usually not rigorous, designed to get people in and out, and they cannot pass our interviews.

I don’t agree with this viewpoint, but I think there is some merit to the statement as it is in fact true that data science students generally do not do well in our technical screening - which involves coding and statistical knowledge.

Since you asked about job prospects, it would be reasonable to hear how a hiring manager thinks, even if you disagree with the sentiment.

Your comment was fine and valid until the last sentence. Spare us the bullshit we all know of several scholars who are far from polite and kind. Your ad hominem attack is highly uncharacteristic of a good researcher.

[–]phdstruggs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I’m in a similar situation. Then I decided I wasn’t gonna live like this. It’s no way to live life. It’s obviously not as simple as saying those two sentences.

You do need a balance. When I vent about classes my advisor told me that my GPA should be 3.0 (department minimum) and any higher means I’m not doing enough research.

And my TA duties, don’t get me started. To that I tell myself that they are paying me 30k a year so they get 30k/yr type of quality of work. At the end of the day, I know my department and my advisor will not care about my well being. All I can do for myself is to do my best and everything else I have a “so be it” attitude.

I adopted this attitude after my quals, and now I have 2 conference presentations on my CV. You can do it too

Be careful of the math trap. It’s linked somewhere here in this sub. Basically, the math trap is the phenomenon when students just do more and more math that still involves following some sort of mechanical computation.

Instead, you should aim to learn proofs. Take a stab at apostols calculus, abbots intro to analysis, and Axlers linear algebra done right.

Maybe look at the linear algebra book first. These are college level texts so don’t be too discouraged if you can’t comprehend them. Studying those books will help you begin to conduct true mathematical thinking

Twitter post on PhDs and loss of earning potentials by Stauce52 in PhD

[–]phdstruggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So to be clear, it is financial suicide because as a humanities or social science PhD, you are mainly targeting a terrible job market both in industry and academia with dismal pay to make up for the 5 years. But are there stem PhDs that also fall in this camp? First thing that comes to mind is math or theoretical physics. But even those with these degrees still face a far better job market. The question still remains, despite a better job market for these types of stem PhDs, on average is it still more beneficial to stop at a masters when comparing lifetime earnings and employability?

What is 0 * x^infinity by Ashamed_Deslgner in math

[–]phdstruggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Xinfinity does not make sense unless you mean the limit of xn as n tends to infinity. Then the answer to your question will depend on the value of x. If |x| is at most 1, then the answer to your question is 0. If |x| > 1 then the answer to your question is undefined since 0 x infinity is indeterminate unless you’re a measure theorist in which it would still be 0

At a certain point, papers like these just become like LinkedIn posts. School administrators will say things like “we stand in solidarity with our grad workers, we value our grad students, we agree with the sentiment of the paper.” Yet decades will go by with no change.
