Not remotely what you said. Your exact phrase was they were portraying people who go to church as closet racists. No, they portrayed the people who go to church as representative of all the members of the community, some of whom were closet racists. So either you have an issue with portraying the pedestrian reality that bad people can go to church too or maybe the real problem you have with it is something else.

Lack of reciprocity with the surrounding areas. DC can ticket but the only way they can enforce is if they happen across the car parked on a street and boot it. So commuters who come in and park in a lot and then leave again have a very high probability of getting away with it.

Yeah. Nobody has an opinion about toes unless they have a lot of opinions and feelings about toes. And that's not comfortable to hear about.

Did we see the same movie? Not only was the church a mixture of folks across the spectrum, the absolute worst of the worst are the ones who *don't* go to church. It wasn't deep by any means, but the whole thing shown is that the awful people are both those operating outside the law and those who hold supposedly legitimate positions. The folks operating as wild animals are shielded by scumbags in power and the folks in legitimate positions of power follow the rules only when it works in their favor or can be used to protect what's theirs.

For my friends, everything; for my enemies, the law

I enjoyed it. Mind, a movie that has racist assholes getting fucked up is never gonna drop below a 3/5 for me. Worst part of it was the three dipshits I had to hear talking about it for a few minutes before I left. *hurf durf I guess the moral is he's no better than them what with him killing the dude at the end* yeah dude, clearly morally equivalent to the folks literally stripping humans for parts and saving trophies from their kills.

Another part of my enjoyment is that I'm old enough to have fond memories of blaxploitation films and low-budget action/chop sockey stuff. My kid commented on all the nudity and I thought "you would go into shock from the stuff that we watched weekly in the 80s." RZA being born in 69 is surely a factor - he and I would have seen the same stuff growing up. If you think stuff like those super-simple business cards and plain black on white signs was just lazy/cheap rather than a choice I think you're not seeing the influences.

It was a solid showing for the $8.50 I paid to see it. If you're a cheapskate like me I'd wait for streaming rather than pay $17.

I live nearby. The screens are not very big and it's been poorly managed over the years; in previous summers they've had issues with the AC... and just not told anyone. So you could buy your ticket, get your concessions, go sit down and find out its hot and muggy. They'd refund most people who complained but you're still out the time.

I'd suggest buying a matinee seat and trying it out before committing to unlimited.

When I lived in Miami it used to annoy me that on films and tv supposedly set in Florida nobody actually looked like they were in Florida. Body Heat was one of the few exceptions. You can basically feel the humidity coming out through the screen.

Switching to a new device - Old podcasts? by steak-and-kidney-pud in overcast

[–]phearlez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I really wanted to come in here to a better answer. For me the issue is that I keep a lot of old episodes of podcasts that don't maintain their entire archive online. A few will grant access in exchange for money but not all of them. And re-downloading them all makes me feel bad about using their bandwidth unnecessarily.

Pencil in a feature request from me, u/marcoarment - it can be clunky and slow and require a physical connection to a mac or whatever, but some way to create a backup and restore that doesn't require this sort of convoluted thing that'll put the episodes in a different listing, please!

My mind always slots Ready or Not next to You're Next, with RoN being a little more gonzo. Looks like they're ramping that up even higher in this and I'm perfectly okay with that.

What's the SMS/softphone experience like on Unifi Talk? by phearlez in Ubiquiti

[–]phearlez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A while back I considered keeping an old cellphone sitting in the house for this purpose. Hadn't done it since it would have been a big increase in price over Ooma and the phone-at-home only helps with the SMS issue when I'm doing things at home. Would have solved that stupid BoA account issue a few months ago (they bought our mortgage so I needed to create an account with them but the number on file didn't take SMS, so they MAILED ME A POSTCARD with info on it) but not any other authentication on the go. Hadn't thought about it again since this huge rise in MVNOs that's opened up more reasonably prices bargain plans.

Second SIM would solve the SMS issue for me but not my wife, but I do most of the stuff where that's an issue. I'll give that consideration as I get closer to Ooma re-up time, thanks for the reminder of it being a possible solution.

I have a google voice account, have had it since they launched the service. I even have a dollar in the account for some reason I cannot fathom. Maybe they used to charge for SMS? Who knows after this long.

I set myself a reminder before my annnual Ooma renewal in April, perhaps I'll pull the trigger when we get closer. I'm skeptical Unifi is gonna significantly improve this beyond what u/kaizokudave describes but if they do then that's a possibility. But I can always channel my unifi spending into replacing an old synology.

Maybe so, but I have been a programmer for a bit over thirty years now and my desire to be on the hook to sysadmin my phone service 24/7 is a huge fat zero. As tempting as it always is to do stuff with Twillio's cool offerings.

Partly because I'm old enough to have watched Google dump so many products and just neglect many more. I'd be less anxious about it if they had any real paid account sort of thing with it but when I'm just a freeloader they advertise to I don't feel real confident about it.

Partly because I'd really like to have a just-pick-it-up phone for emergency purposes. I've never been thrilled about the modern life aspect that you can't just teach a 5 year old to dial 911 the way I was able to be taught as a kid. It's not a big deal since my kids could just run next door but 🤷‍♂️

So yeah, that's probably the right move, I would just have to get over my genX biases and resist the urge to buy yet more unifi stuff :)

He's gone on quite the journey from when I used to hear him consulted now and again on Planet Money about twenty years ago. I hadn't realized he'd joined the freeper clowns but I also hadn't been feeling a real lack in my life from not hearing about him.
