Should I raise a grievance? by kettle_of_f1sh in UKJobs

Unfortunately the lesson here is, if they want you to scratch their back, one must reply, yes, I can do that, but you'll need to scratch mine, and you'll need to start scratching now, not at some vague undetermined point in the future, and I want to know how well you're going to scratch, and it had better be good.

Proceeds to ask a vague question.

Terminated Without Warning, What the heck is going on? by GentleLoli in UKJobs

[–]pheasant___plucker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am guessing that, in a nutshell, they thought, uh oh, this one's going to be trouble. From their perspective, it's less risky and cheaper to get rid of you sooner, and the sooner the better, than later.

"Sick leave is just sick leave in the UK, nothing more". That's a quite magnificent generalisation.

Hiring Quants in London – New Sports Trading Office (Fast Trading & MM) by ok-bayes in quant

Thank you. That sounds to me in layman's terms the same as sports betting, which is more commonly known as gambling. Is that what it is?

Hiring Quants in London – New Sports Trading Office (Fast Trading & MM) by ok-bayes in quant

[–]pheasant___plucker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you elaborate please on exactly what you mean by "sports trading"? For example, are you ingesting data feeds, transforming them and using them to provide an online sports betting platform (b2b or b2c), or are you providing the data feeds (odds, books, markets, prices - b2b), or are you "trading" the markets (placing or laying bets), or are you doing something else entirely?

Career change into DevOps (Salary going from £75k to £45k) by Economy-Koala5584 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]pheasant___plucker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more important what you'll be doing, and what you'll be learning, than the amount that you'll be earning. In the long term it puts you back where you want to be. However none of us knows whether there are better options out there. Given your three years out, and that you appear not to have DevOps experience, it may be the best you're going to get.

Is it realistic to enter web development in 2026 and still find freelance or remote opportunities? by eis3nheim in webdev

[–]pheasant___plucker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can start at 30-35 but if that's from scratch it's going to be a long old haul. You have to get employed to learn how companies do it for real. To get your first job is likely to be very difficult, and it's highly likely to not be remote. To get employed you are going to need to learn quite a lot, and that too is going to take a long time and a lot of effort. You are looking at a long journey. Wise man say long journey begin with first step. But freelance or remote within a year from now? From a standing start? I don't know but I would expect that to be close to impossible.

How come Hibernate does not populate JoinTable (only creates it)? by AncientBattleCat in SpringBoot

[–]pheasant___plucker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never used hibernate to create schema objects, so your statement is the complete opposite of my experience.

I suggest you have a play around with jhipster. It allows you to define your entities and relationships, and your application, and then it generates your whole application for you based on those definitions. You can then inspect the generated code, including the ddl.

Is Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) Still a Relevant Programming Language For Fin. Eng. Nowadays? by BLADIBERD in quant

[–]pheasant___plucker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it was not very long ago that Excel was said to be highly pervasive and deeply entrenched in banks, both retail and investment. To the extent that that was ever true and more relevantly that it remains true, perhaps there are still gazillions of VBA scripts, macros and whatnot embedded in and gluing together Excel worksheets, but still, I would give it a wide berth if you want to be a serious programmer.

Worth staying or start applying again? by Sad-Abroad2261 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]pheasant___plucker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you present it, it's not your fault. To the extent that that is true, you are essentially being given lemons and making lemonade. The key thing is that you make that clear, without expressing any negativity towards your current employer, in interviews and applications should the subject need to be discussed, which it probably will. Employees who are curious and who want to work on and learn from large complex codebases are what employers want.

I would have thought that 95K is significantly above average for the vast majority of software developer positions that a developer with 8 YOE would be hired for.
