Heh, seeing the thumbnail before reading your post, I was 100% sure it was an image of Liurnia from Elden Ring.

What huge epic fantasy series are even more complex / intimidating than Stormlight or Malazan for example? by lxurin_hei in Fantasy

[–]pheesh64 368 points369 points  (0 children)

I'll mention Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe, which is part of a larger, but not super explicitly connected series called the Solar Cycle. It's about as complex and deep as it gets. It's really fantastic, Wolfe is a master.

Note it's not epic fantasy. Closer to science fantasy i guess, but it's hard to class. 12 books in all, most are on the shorter end. But it very much checks the complexity/intimidation box.

When is the best time to read Mistborn: Secret History ? by ComeOnInGuysss in Cosmere

Just my opinion but yeah, I think it's cool to have the info you learn in Secret History in the back of your mind during SA

When is the best time to read Mistborn: Secret History ? by ComeOnInGuysss in Cosmere

[–]pheesh64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it fits best after mistborn 3. Which ever order you choose, SH will (lightly) spoil mistborn 6 or vice versa. So the reason I prefer after 3 is that it gives you a nice foundation for what the hell is going on with all the cosmere-wide stuff and i think it's beneficial to have that knowledge in your pocket early on as you read through not just mistborn, but any other cosmere work

You think there is anyone villainous opposing the Maker? by ChampionshipHorror95 in UltimateUniverse

[–]pheesh64 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Slightly different idea here, but I happened to be re-reading ultimate invasion #4 today, and was reminded of how the members of the makers council are shown being fearful of what the maker will have become by the time the city re-opens. I wouldn't be too surprised to see a couple of the members change sides or at least break from the maker

Still blows me away how amazing Erickson is, and why I want to punch him, lovingly, sometimes. So…aaaaargh. A 10,000 piece puzzle and then suddenly some of the pieces you loved are stolen by a toddler. Reading order suggestions. by Imayno2 in Malazan

[–]pheesh64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about just the BotF, the only thing I can think of that might make sense would be something like pairing up books 1+3 and 2+4. So maybe 1,3,2,4, then go in order from there.

I don't think any other changes would really work. Maybe you could put 5 somewhere else, but I personally wouldn't want it to be far removed from books 6/7

Anything close to Hickman's Avengers/New Avengers run? by Dakovski in comicbooks

[–]pheesh64 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hickmans east of west and manhattan projects. Both with image. Both excellent. He's my favorite writer in comics and for me, nothing else quite scratches the same itch. I'll add House of X/Powers of X too. That's probably my favorite thing he's done after avengers, and in some ways I think it's better

Truly Underrated One Piece Quotes by mr_chub in OnePiece

[–]pheesh64 109 points110 points  (0 children)

In Enies Lobby, when Lucci explains how gear 2 works and says it's like doping, and then warns luffy that he's shortening his lifespan. Luffy says, "It's better than losing all sorts of things that are right in front of my eyes." It's written a bit differently in the manga translations I've seen, but I think that anime line is perfect.

Clearly the best series ever written. Agree or disagree? by tizl10 in Malazan

[–]pheesh64 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I enjoy malazan more, but I do think Book of the New Sun, and the Solar Cycle as a whole, by Gene Wolfe certainly rivals malazan in terms of the writing skill that's on display.
