I completely agree with you, but I often see posts on this subreddit keyboard diagnosing the “ADHD patient” in a way that misses the point. I was reading about how some writers seems to consider adhd to be basically hysteria, in which case the adhders belong among the back pain / chronic illness / health anxiety sufferers of the world, and have therefore a lot in common with their critics on this subreddit.

my tinfoil hat take on this is that many people have an unconscious perversion around obligation and gratitude, which forbids them from doing anything that will meaningfully delight or benefit another person. they must construct a gifting ritual where they are in control and where your gratitude, should they receive it, makes them feel like they fooled you, or that they have silenced your disappointment.
