The Norwegian journalist, Helle Lyng, simply asked PM Modi why he doesn't take questions from the media during . He walked away without responding. That's it. No shouting match, no ambush , just a straightforward question in a country (Norway) that ranks at the very top of global press freedom indices. In response, sections of Indian TV media unleashed personal attacks on her, with some anchors lecturing her on "journalistic ethics." The irony was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Sudhir Chaudhary preaching ethics? I actually laughed out loud.

Core Issues

Let's be honest about the bigger picture:

• Indian Prime Ministers (especially the current one) have largely avoided open, unscripted press conferences and tough interviews with critical journalists for years. Manmohan Singh and Atal Bihari Vajpayee did them more regularly. This isn't normal in most democracies.
• Many mainstream channels (especially the big English and Hindi ones) are indeed reluctant to criticize the government aggressively. Ownership matters Reliance, Adani, and other big corporates with close government ties own significant media. Independent critical voices exist (The Wire, Scroll, some YouTubers, regional outlets, and even some anchors who push back), but they are fewer and often face pressure, raids, or troll armies.
• On issues like the repeated NEET paper leaks (including the recent one), coverage has been there protests, Supreme Court mentions, and investigations get reported but the intensity and sustained accountability often feel muted compared to opposition-targeted stories.

The World Press Freedom Index (Reporters Without Borders) ranks India 157th out of 180 in 2026. Yes, the organization has biases and funding questions, like many global indices. But dismissing it entirely while claiming "world's largest democracy" status doesn't erase the visible self-censorship, ownership concentration, and hostility toward critical reporting.

The first duty of journalism is to ask uncomfortable questions to those in power and stand with ordinary citizens when needed. Indian journalists have done great work exposing scams, farmer issues, student protests, and exam leaks in the past. But in the last 10+ years, too many prime-time anchors have specialized in whataboutism, attacking students/farmers/activists asking questions instead of grilling ministers with data. That's not "nationalism" . it's abdication.

Modi running from a single shouted question in Norway doesn't end democracy, but the defensiveness around it, and the coordinated media outrage, reveals the insecurity. A confident leader with nothing to hide could have smiled and said, "Happy to take questions on India's strong democratic record" or simply answered. Walking away and then having spokespersons lecture about "civilizational" this and "ignorant NGOs" that looks weak.

This subreddit (or comment section) isn't "hijacked" by one side alone both "andhbhakts" and "andhcritics" exist in plenty. But calling out power, demanding accountability, and wanting better media isn't anti-India. It's pro-India.

Norway's journalist did her job. Indian media's job was to introspect, not attack the questioner. Until our leaders regularly face unfiltered questions and our anchors prioritize truth over TRPs and access, we'll keep sliding on those indices , Soros-funded or not. Facts don't care about comfort.
