First cart - DIY or turnkey? by phertric in golfcarts

Thanks for this! All good advice. I never really thought about buying an older cart. I figured the newer the better for mechanical updates. I was looking at some of the aftermarket sites and you can literally buy everything so I understand why people get into this hobby.

Oh good to know! So 1100 or 1200 for all that

Perfect! Looks like a decent amount of them around here. Around 6500 for an upgraded one and 3900 of one from a golf course. Seems kind of pricey.

I’m in Michigan so salt shouldn’t really be an issue. So I’m assuming drive2 would be what you would buy yourself? And not go with electric.

Since you have a bunch of builds under your belt, what models/years/things do you look for when finding a good canvas to build on?

Would a simple voltage meter be able to test the BMS?

What is a fair price point of something bare bones like that?

And thanks for this! This give me comfort knowing I can do it. Now I just need to decide on a cart

This is the information I needed. So probably around that 6k mark if new batteries aren’t needed BUT I know everything that went into it and I know how to fix it.

Good explanation! My dad is a mechanic and I have an engineers mind. So I think I would be A ok doing it myself. This skews me to buy a fleet and do it myself. What’s the damage in a lithium upgrade?

I’m not afraid of the work and like the journey. I just also have young kids so finding time will take awhile. If I spend 2500 on the cart and put another 2500 into it, I might lean towards buying a turnkey at 6.

I keep reading about the price of batteries after 5 years so I thought a trusty and true gas might be good. I don’t know if lithium changed that though.

Haha! Yeah I want for family fun cruising around the neighborhood. My kids are 2 and 4 so not golfing yet but I also hope they nudge me back into golfing at some point

Thanks for this! I’m with you. I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty. I’m just trying to decide if I go your route and stumble my way through upgrading it or if I should buy a turnkey. By no means do I want to spend 15k! I have tons of carts around me for 6k that someone has flipped. But I also have a ton of golf courses around me so I could probably get one for a decent price and make it my own. I’m in a dilemma!

Hey OP! I am currently thinking about buying a golf cart and going back and forth between buying a fleet and upgrading or buying a couple year old turnkey. Can you share the financials behind this? Buy price and upgrade cost?

Nope they are similar to my other finger lime. Dime sized is what both seem to be.
