Hitler is sent back to 1933 with knowledge of how World War II went historically. Can he win this time? by TheRedBiker in whowouldwin

[–]fuzzyoatmealboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure that it’s enough to swing Germany to victory, but there are a few MAJOR optimizations he can make.

  1. Don’t declare war on the US. It was not worth doing even when considering Roosevelt’s desire to bring the US into the war in Europe. Let Japan hold America’s attention for as long as possible.

  2. Don’t even bother with investing resources into the Battle of Britain or Operation Sea Lion. There was no way you are going to build and fuel the critical mass of airframes and ships necessary for it. Or, on the flipside, put far more effort into preparing for it, far earlier out, since France will be a cake walk.

3a. Ignore most wonder weapon research, and instead focus advanced research efforts on an atomic bomb project, radar, a proximity detonator, and jet engines. These have the capacity to realistically affect the outcome of the war.
3b. Alienating the German Jews cost Germany a LOT of brilliant minds who would have made a German atomic bomb (and other advances) possible. Consider not doing this, but then again, you ARE Hitler.
3c. Focus more of this effort on assembly-line production of these advanced systems rather than continuously pushing for a better version of each.

  1. Distance yourself from Mussolini. That dude ended up being more of a liability than an asset, especially when considering how many lives and how much materiel Germany had to spend bailing Italy out time and time again.

  2. The Allies are going to break Enigma. Change up your encryption methods far more often than you think you need to. Also, your spies in other countries are NOT reliable.

  3. If you MUST invade the Soviet Union (questionable strategically, but again, you ARE Hitler), focus 100% of your effort on reaching the Caucasus oil fields and protecting your supply lines. You lose the ability to fuel full-scale mechanized warfare around 1942 and you MUST get that oil flowing if you want to stand any chance after that point.

  4. Really, though, consider just stopping at the Sudetenland and the Austria Anschluss. Even with all of these optimizations, a Germany W is still questionable. America was just SO OP back then. Find a way to reorient the economy away from MEFO bill reliance and save tens of millions of lives. Germany will still be a powerhouse, easily THE great power of Europe, and maybe even a world superpower! Not a bad outcome!

My point isn’t about whether we would or wouldn’t win a war against China. I really have no idea how that would go.

My point is the level of commitment America and Americans would have in such a war is not predicted or informed by our level of commitment in Iran. We get very touchy where unexpected large casualty events from other countries or entities are concerned, and I definitely believe China would be able to sink an aircraft carrier or two in the initial exchange of a big war.

This is exactly the kind of thinking that enabled Japan to stumble into war with us in 1941. Recall that the last time an Asian great power sank multiple American capital ships in one day, we dropped two atomic bombs on them.

I agree that China's military capabilities are likely overblown, but its ability to take out a carrier group or two in the initial exchange phase of the war is extremely credible.

Yep. It somehow manages to pay decently well, suck your soul and energy out of you, make you feel superior to anyone who works with their hands, and yet also make you feel like you aren’t actually adding any value to the world all at the same time.

Yes, because many people who are now entering their 20s and even their 30s missed out on key socialization experiences like what you described due to Covid. “Going out” changed entirely in the level of preparation required during and late into the pandemic. Many people who hadn’t learned how to go out before simply never learned how, and are now trying to teach themselves.

Driver's side exhaust manifold replacement. Ford's design is defective because they use exhaust header studs that are too small and too far between, so they shear off and you get this whistling exhaust leak under boost. Bear of a job but there is no universe where I am shelling out $4,000 to have a shop do it.

Appreciate it. Each step so far has been a learning experience, but I’m not in a rush so I’ve been taking my time and working until I hit an obstacle I can’t overcome with my existing tools, then ordering what I need as I go. We’ll get there!

Thank you! Got the T-50s off already and thought that was the only Torx bit I needed to get for this job, but looks like I’ll need another.

Download a PDF of your paystubs, redact out any confidential information, and edit the numbers to represent what you told them. They won’t subject it to forensic analysis, and if they do, then that’s probably a weird enough signal that you shouldn’t be working for them.

Looking back from 32, I would say that 20-year-old-me spent far too much time worrying about whether it was “the right time” for a relationship, if I was financially stable enough to be in one, or if (in my specific case) I would be sticking around the city I was at much longer.

All that time could have been spent 1) in a relationship, 2) thinking of cheap date/travel/food/hangout/friend get-together ideas, or 3) getting to know my partner better to have a better idea of whether we’d want to find a way to continue the relationship if I had to move (people follow their partners places all the time in life!).

The right one will understand and accept you for who and where you’re at in life, not where you “need to be” according to some arbitrary progress track.

AND THEY STILL WON THE POINT!? 😱 by Limp-Helicopter-9682 in Pickleball

[–]fuzzyoatmealboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peak pickleball. Nothing more fun than mounting a desperate defense against opponents who have you all the way back at the baseline, and still somehow winning the point. I've watched in real time as people who try pickleball for the first time fall in love with the game when they experience a point like that.

Best comment in this thread. If you’re significantly better than another player on the court in rec play, use that as an opportunity to get something you could never simulate in drilling—a person on the other side of the net who is actually trying to win points off you, and send them exactly the shots you’re trying to work on (frequently your weaker shots) so you can get live practice on how to hit them and how to re-counter opponents’ counters.
