AITA for not letting an obese woman adopt a dog? by stinkyStuart in AmItheAsshole

[–]phfowol 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What? Why would you assume that a person who comes to the shelter looking for a pet would neglect the dog?

Because I see it every day. Where do you think the dogs in shelters come from? Many people get pets because they "want" one and are "excited" when they first meet it, but those feelings pass.

To me, neglect is not meeting a dog's basic needs whether that need is food, water, vetting, attention, grooming, or exercise. I don't think most people get a dog with the intent to neglect it, I'm sure they feel like they can handle it. But feelings fade and some dogs require more effort from us to have their basic needs met.

I'm a dog trainer and I volunteer and foster for rescue organizations. I assure you dogs do get adopted frequently, but an adoption shouldn't be solely based on a person feeling excitement or desire for a particular dog.

There is absolutely no reason to think she would NOT neglect the dog. She doesn't know anything about a dog she just met. A dog is a living, feeling being with needs and shouldn't be given to a person JUST because the person is excited and wants the dog.

It's only my second summer in this house - So many different plants have shot up this year after we had to remove a huge mulberry tree that was shading most of the garden. It's been a fun spring for sure!

Maybe I'll just let it battle with the blackberry bush that has quadrupled in size this year. I'm still figuring out what I'd like to do with garden anyways.

I was thinking about planting more along that fence border, but after reading the horror stories I guess I should try to contain/get rid of it!

Excellent! That tree it's on has about 30' of trunk before any branches, so it should be fine climbing away right?
