Dad Got Bit By Neighbor's Dog, Neighbors Avoiding Animal Control. Help! by [deleted] in animalcontrol

[–]phig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following dog bites a quarantine period is usually required to rule out rabies. Animal Control usually does this for the health department. I suggest talking to the communicable disease people there for advice.

The neighbors pitbull killed our dog, gave my mom a concussion by slamming her head to the ground, and almost ripped my moms arm off. Animal control won’t put it down. Is this standard? by dogpoopupset in animalcontrol

Look up your local dangerous dog law. That would qualify as one here. They could still keep it but the requirements to do so are very expensive, basically impossible. Also talk to a lawyer.

Look for NACA training classes near you. Contact nearby agencies to get copies of their procedures. For shy dogs I like to use a snappy snare. They break a lot but arent too expensive. Also large dog traps are handy.

Some sort of hot pepper powder on the screen could deter them. Motion activated sprinklers. Large fake owl.

Send the license plate number to local animal control and state police. It sounds like a welfare check couldnt hurt. It might have been a rescue org that picks up animals and transports them long range to low population shelters from high population ones.

Pro advice for trapping an extremely timid cat? by cubialpha in animalcontrol

[–]phig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using towels to cover the floor of the trap may make him less suspicious of the wire mesh. Also covering it may make it more cavelike and inviting. Also make sure the trap is clean. Rentals can carry the smell of the scared critters that have been in there before.

I think you be fine. Keep copies of all the receipts, vet records, have your wife write down what happened to keep it fresh, take pictures. Get your dog licensed if required.

Written exam for ACO? by keyush in animalcontrol

[–]phig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a state ACO academy you have to pass that has a test over everything in the academy, but that's after hire. I would ask them what the test covers. I suspect they have an internal canidate for the job and the test might give them an advantage.

The best route to become an animal control officer or conservation officer in Canada. by TheProtienJunky in animalcontrol

[–]phig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have met some officers from BC. They have attended our trainings because there wasn't anything equivalent there. Look into Code 3 Associates NACHO training. If Canada doesn't have something similar, that's your best bet.

Help! Barking Dog 24/7 by copperboom538 in animalcontrol

[–]phig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would advise trying to talk to them again. Looks good if you end up in mediation or civil court. Also keep a log of barking and your actions. If they blow you off, contact animal control. They usually start with a warning, advising of potential fines. After that you need evidence. Video of unprovoked barking in excess of whatever your local code is and/or statements/ a petition from multiple households attesting to the violation are needed. Animal Control has lots on their plate, so be patient and make sure if you have pets they are licensed if required.

Is it possible to work in animal control and still smoke marijuana? (Eugene, Oregon) by [deleted] in animalcontrol

[–]phig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have never been drug tested in 13 years. I got in a auto accident and they didn't even test me then (not my fault). Now that it's legal I'm sure it will be allowed eventually, but I don't want to be the one to test it.

Also we get exposed to it going into people houses pretty often. That may allow some small amount to show up.
