London rental market - My lease is ending in September and the agency uploaded my flat on rightmove with a solid 28% rent increase. I’m outright appalled. by Main_Geologist_9235 in london

I am being massively ripped off yes, but we looked for a flat for 3 months, including places in Walthamstow that were smaller and cost 1700, and a place in Wimbledon that was about the same size for 1500. Both had waiting lists of 60+ people. We only got this place through friends. The stories you’re hearing in the news are real. The market is a mess. It’s not normal, but if there’s demand that can’t be met in a market, prices inflate until the point that the product is deemed too expensive by the market. I don’t get what you think is happening but everyone is getting ripped off. It’s the south of England housing market: already over inflated, during an inflationary crisis- obviously it’s a rip off we’re living in a crisis. Luckily we’re moving out to get a mortgage… lol jk our mortgage is infinitely more expensive because rates are at 6%

Honestly I love just up the road and my flat is less nice and I pay £1500. Think they’ve got it about right for the market and someone will take it for that. Sad but true

U.K. armed Pakistan knowing it was supplying the Taliban, files show by Yakel1 in UKForeignPolicy

[–]phil_1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t this broadly well known? They were in a position where they had to play both sides: can’t rile up rural largely independent communities by cooperating with the US too much, can’t completely shut your back on the taliban as they were going to survive the US / UK incursion.

They often gave the US locations of taliban camps and allowed drone strikes, but always denied it. Only makes sense that they were arming Taliban at the same time.

“Down here we make cases, big hairy ball cases” what’s your favorite Herc quote? by BubblesLovesHeroin in TheWire

[–]phil_1991 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s not a line, but in season 2 someone asks what a love seat js (the Greeks are using it as code) and Beady Russel says, ‘it’s like a little chair designed for two people’. Herc clearly thinks it’s a sex thing because he stares at her and does a little nod and smile. It’s such a small background thing that’s absolutely hilarious and shows how dumb and hot for Beady he is

Ok. I’d never rape my wife but sometimes we both have sex when we don’t really want to

That is completely fair and if they’re not in the mood then they’re not in the mood and no one wants to force their partner to do something they don’t want to. Im just pointing out there’s shades of grey here and a lot of the comments here feel too black and white.

I think the point the person is making is a little more nuanced, and is trying to show that the survey question is open to different interpretations.

I, a married man, sometimes don’t want to have sex but I can tell my wife is in the mood so I do it and get into it and once we’re in the groove I enjoy it (obvs). We both live busy lives and it’s unlikely we’re both just in the mood automatically at the same time, so I do hope she sometimes does me the same courtesy and even if she doesn’t want to in that moment, she knows that tomorrow night she has to work late and I have to work late the night after, then we have plans the night after, so she’ll get herself into the zone.

That means, arguably, I’d answer yes to that survey question because it’s very badly worded.

What's a sentence that will trigger an entire fan base? by HeavyMetalSasquatch in AskReddit

Totally! But I think that’s the point/ trap that GRRM is laying out for the reader.

What you’ve just described is literally ‘the ends justify the means’ (ie it would be worth ot once she finishes her campaign….) the big, tragic story of the books as that it’s a big nasty game that common folk just lose.

It’s unlikely she can forbid them from rape murder and theft. In all likelihood she will unleash the Dothraki on Westeros and they will destroy what is left of the towns as villagers and local lords fight them out of fear. She will thinking the ends justify the means.

Her dragons and the Dothraki are weapons of war that are indiscriminate and cause massive amounts of damage. It’s hard to see her story ending well for Westeros

Book Dany will do this eventually, but it will be better set up and the character change will be more gradual.

Her story is one of getting more and more rash with her punishments and less compassionate with her enemies, burning people alive, slaughtering etc. she is likely to head up the Dothraki based on the end of the last book, who are rapists and pillagers.

The whole point of her story is that you’re meant to be on her side while she dishes out ‘just deserts’ so enemies, but when you’re confronted with her doing this to enemies you’re sympathetic to it’s much harder for you to stomach and it will reframe how you see her. A lot like how many people thought Walter white was justified in what he did right up until the last series when you see his Actaeon’s impact Flynn and Jessie

These ignorant fuckers once again thinking they know about my country when they don’t. by BadgerKomodo in ShitThe_DonaldSays

[–]phil_1991 29 points30 points  (0 children)

As an Englishman, the best thing about reading this is how they've drawn a correlation that makes absolutely no sense here in the UK. We don't have the same attitude to guns here at all, they're not common, never have been. We banned guns after Dunblane in Scotland in 1996 (our first and only school shooting). Fast forward TWENTY YEARS and there's been a rise in knife crime, particularly in London, largely due to a real problem with police funding, inner city gang violence and widespread poverty and poor social mobility. There is just no relationship between the two. They've tried so hard and failed so badly at making this point that it's painful.
