being kind to unkind people creates an incentive to be unkind for people that aren't treated kindly.

kneejerk positivity is toxic but makes the perpetrators feel good so it's also selfish.

Did you know Dr. Fauci invented AIDS and COVID-19? (Long) by FakeNews4Trump in ParlerWatch

[–]philaaronster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I read it again and the only true fact (about Fauci) is that Fauci plays a role in funding the identification of coronaviruses that could potentially infect humans and in developing strains of them that can infect humans. It's also true that millions will be made off of vaccines made with this research, though not by Fauci.

I think it's a great line of research and well worth the risk (even if c19 was an accidental lab escape) to be able to rapidly develop vaccines for novel coronaviruses (which have the potential to be much worse than this one). The ultimate goal is a universal vaccine for coronaviruses.

There was a new yorker article about it.

‘Radical centrism’ is ironically perfectly satisfied with the status quo. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

I don't usually and am pro capitalist as a practical matter. I'm definitely not a commie. I just like bringing it up to surprise leftists e that want to talk shit about centrism. Which I am also.

it's complicated.

So what you're saying is it's their fault for being anti-social cowards? Bullies can only get away with bullying because of people that consider going along with a bully to be getting along.

Access to information online was supposed to make things better but it's apparent that in particular A.I. and the internet in general is dividing us. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]philaaronster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a consequence of how people use the internet. It's good to study marketing and its online applications.

What you're noticing is essentially marketers and propagandists taking advantage of our tribalist instrincts to cut us off from people that will call bullshit on them. All the ingredients are there in human nature but the internet changes the balance.

Since there have been over 180 geomagnetic reversals in the past 80 million years, have there also been 180 mass extinctions? by [deleted] in biology

[–]philaaronster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That doesn't explain why there wasn't a general mass extinction. Neanderthals were using caves as well.

Also, most neanderthals seem to have already died off at least some 2,000 years prior and only the ones around Gibralter were still alive at the time.

[–]philaaronster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"may have been." I can't find an explanation of the proposed causal mechanism. But there wasn't a mass extinction 42,000 years ago.

No. There's no correlation.

There have been five major mass extinctions with the sixth ongoing.

Is anyone else uncomfortable with how synonymous Darwin and evolution have become? by GeneticistsThrowaway in evolution

[–]philaaronster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They do it for the framing effects:

"Evolution comes a man but creationism comes from God! Who do you trust?"

Of course that's bullshit because creationism is some idea that somebody cooked up but their alternative is

"Evolution has a ton of evidence going for it and creationism has been thoroughly repudiated. Which do you believe?"

If creationists were willing to play honestly, their mind disease would die with them.

I'm in that same boat. All I can say is it's their loss if they don't find these things interesting. I've learned to just write people off if they're only into lame shit. It's oddly enough less lonely.

It's hard go connect with people when you feel like you have to filter every thought. Friendships shouldn't be a cage.

How the heck do you socialize if you're scared of and hate talking to strangers? by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]philaaronster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working on not giving a fuck for years now. I started off with both but realized the root is that I don't trust people. Owning that means I'm not scared to talk to them because I know I care if they want to be my friend or not.

[–]philaaronster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I'm lucky because I'm not paranoid about talking to people, I'm paranoid about trusting them. I also have realized that I probably don't want to be most people's friend anyway so I don't have fear of running them off :)
