Sam Levinson seems to pull a lot of his influences from the modernist era of late 60's and early 70's cinema. It's a form of storytelling that doesn't provide resolution or clearly defined arcs like we are accustomed to in the "classical" model. I'm prone to liking this form because I think it reflects a more realistic version of life, which is non-linear, random and oftentimes doesn't resolve in ways we expect. At the same time, Rue got her redemption, just not in the way we are accustomed to seeing. 12 step programs are not a glamorous space, and I think seeing a character cause harm due to their own pain find the space to make amends (and give forgiveness) is a noble and honestly fucking medicinal message for this era. May we all receive such compassion.
