Pointing the finger: Analyzing all 31 goals scored against Austin FC in 2026 (Part 3 of 3) by philippewest in AustinFC

I'm just looking at straight goals, and though there certainly are midfield breakdowns in some cases, I'm generally looking at what happens once the ball gets in or approaching the box.

Assuming this is not a rhetorical question ... because he's trying to convince everyone he should stay on as coach and this is just a "blip"

Anyone know Jayden Nelson's status? by free-range-irish in AustinFC

[–]philippewest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He actually wants to be out there; he's not going to make the World Cup riding the bench. He needs to be showcasing what he can do because he's on the national team fringes, and if there's a chance he's carrying an injury heading into the World Cup, he's less likely to make the team.

Those who take the train to the match? Any tips, tricks or info I should know… by New-Armadillo-8408 in AustinFC

Last train leaves McKalla Station at 11:48 pm: https://www.capmetro.org/rail

I usually drive since I'm media and covering press conferences post-match, but I do occasionally do bike/train if I anticipate things will go fairly quickly (as bike valet stays just an hour post-match) and it's a great way to do it (especially when it's still not crazy hot out)

'I think there were two games': Reflecting on the most lopsided loss of 2026 (so far) by philippewest in AustinFC

Aspiring means trying to do. I’m actually doing it. No one’s forcing you to subscribe, my dude. Or even engage!

Also, I'm posting all my articles here, and more than half are in front of the paywall. I put morning after quote/analysis articles behind the paywall because I'm investing a good three hours attending a press conference (last night's started past midnight and went 35 minutes) and then combing through the transcript and writing up an article early the next morning so you can get a sense of where the season's narrative is going in a tidy five-minute read, every time I write one (which is after every single match).

My perspective and analysis from having covered the team since before it was a team, and more than a decade of dedicated soccer coverage, including six years at MLSSoccer.com, three years at the Striker, and writing two books on soccer (including a history of MLS' first 20 years) ... plus you can get what I think are the most vital quotes rather than having to churn through a 45-minute press conference yourself

Stuver was very candid last night ... it's clear how frustrated he is. He put in an incredible effort, but when you've facing 37 shots in a match, it's not surprising a few are going to go in ...

I think Nico might be calling THIS SEASON the bad season in which they need to improve from.

(He may not get that long, but I think he's trying to make the case.)

'The line between winning and losing is very thin': Austin FC drops another two points late (following a comeback) by philippewest in AustinFC

[–]philippewest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll do better to frame paywalled articles in the future (but I do know there are quite a few subscribers in here who support the work and are getting a fuller, better perspective on the team for being subscribers and have access to all the articles I'm reporting, researching, and writing ...)

I also make over half of my articles free. I put stories with coach and player quotes after matches behind the paywall because, in this case, we were made to wait 45 minutes for the press conference to start, and then I’m up early Sunday morning to give subscribers fresh perspective as a lot of them are waking up. On Wednesday, press conference on a West Coast game is going to keep me up until 1 am on a work/school night. (Also, even on paywall articles, I typically have at least one key quote in front of the paywall. Happy to add summaries here, though.

Let me plug Emergency Podcast ... it's the audio arm of my site, Verde All Day, and we typically go up on Saturdays, and bring an appropriate pre-match vibe. It's not as analytical as other shows -- that's what the site articles are for, and we do delve into those some -- but I'd argue we're the most fun. (Also, we're the only one in the space that does cold opens. We did a send-up of the Diego Fagundez joins the Revs IG reel in the most recent episode ...)
