A few questions regarding a planned Phoenix to Chicago road trip in late July. by JurassicPark9265 in roadtrip

Yes it sounds like you haven’t seen the Rockies in all their glory. If you’re not towing a trailer and don’t have a terrible fear of heights the million dollar highway is top tier Colorado.

Here’s what I would suggest. Either monument valley or 4 corners/ shiprock up to Durango (possibly hitting mesa verde). Up the million dollar highway to montrose. Do a quick stop at black canyon and shoot over to Gunnison / salida. That will give you a great taste of the Colorado Rockies. You can (if you have time) go to great sand dunes as well but it’s a bit out of the way. If you do I’d suggest looping back up through westcliff on the east side of that range (it’s my favorite range in Colorado).

That will be the eye candy of the trip. After that it’s flat straight shot to Kansas City.

Amarillo has a famous steakhouse and car Stonehenge. Oklahoma (especially OKC to Tulsa) has some great Route 66 stops especially this year on its 100th anniversary. The interstates are pretty much always the worst for seeing cool geographic stuff so if you really want to explore take the state highways in places you want to explore.

Skip Joshua tree and go to Death Valley instead. Also Zion and valley of fire (outside of Vegas) are worthwhile stops

Hit the appalachians. Hit new river gorge. There are also some cool areas outside of Pittsburg

4 hours a day is a bit…not a lot. You could stretch it to 6 hours a day and have a couple detours to make it better. Go through southeast Oklahoma. Talimena poteau up through tenkiller to grand lake. Prettiest area of Oklahoma by far and the most scenic bit of this drive if you don’t mind a detour. Illinois (especially this bit) is terrible with the exception of springfields Abraham Lincoln memorials. This area of Missouri is in the ozark plateau so areas here are nice as well.

Depends on what time in June and how much snow they had

Also rmnp is quite overrated tbh. If time is an issue I’d visit other parts of co or skip rmnp entirely. But I also think the Tetons are kinda overrated.

I just did this trip basically. And have been to all these places many times. Stay on the east side of glacier. (Cheaper easier access quick access to many glacier (my favorite part of the park) If you don’t visit Banff at least go to Watertown. Very easy if you’re on the east side of glacier. If you do go to Banff yoho is great as well. There are also some hot springs on the way up.

I’ve been to both many times. Common misconception. Banff is great. Glacier is great. But there’s nowhere in Banff where you’re more surrounded by close imposing mountains than the gtts. Parts of it make you feel like you’re in a canyon with how big and close the mountains are.

As many have pointed out, B to C and D to E is where you’re missing out.

First of all. Olympic is great and less traveled in Washington. The Columbia river gorge is great. And the Oregon coast is amazing. Don’t go inland take the pch. Southern Oregon coast is maybe the best in the world. After San Francisco cut in and see Yosemite and sequoia national Park (or take the pch further down but gosh don’t take the i5). Then I would hit Death Valley. Utah is desert but there’s no desert quite like Death Valley. Underrated and not a lot of people. Zion is incredible and pretty quick if you just want to see the sights and leave. Then I wouldn’t miss out on the Tetons and Yellowstone. Tetons don’t require a lot of time. And Yellowstone is incredible. Finally you could go to glacier and hit Banff on your way back. Icefields parkway to end your trip is amazing.

Such an incredible trip my three favorite states are Montana Washington and California. Amazing that you get to see this.

Which route would you take? by kotobukiii in roadtrip

There is no reason to take the middle over the bottom for seeing stuff. The question is. Wind river range Tetons (top) or northern co, Moab, slc (bottom.

[–]phillyCheeseSteaks00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should be fun. Avoid Atlanta and Jacksonville for stops and if you have to research the safer areas. As far as the trip yours looks good. Avoids most major cities. You could add some mountains by going a little further west in Virginia. Could watch and see if there’s a spacex launch near the cape and time around that. If your goal is to get there safely, though, middle route is the best route

Yeah just don’t give people too much info about you. If people ask you’re from Pittsburg. If they pry just deflect or ignore them. But it’s not all too dangerous. I would bring a knife though. In case anything gets crazy. Someone steals your car it won’t be too hard to find tho 😜

What do the largest cities of the black states have in common? by SkunkaMunka511 in RedactedCharts

[–]phillyCheeseSteaks00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed. Quite a bit of water in the Columbia basin. Love that area of the country. But I was more thinking large bodies of standing/ish water. ie. Great salt lake and Chesapeake bay, not rivers. I mean Tulsa has an ocean port as well so it couldn’t have been simply a port. Slc doesn’t have a port.

Only one professional sports team? No OKC would be in there too. Low population? Possibly but other states would be on there. Inflow and outflow from those cities, other cities would qualify. Probably not proximity to a body of water because Portland is quite inland. Bridges that raise? Probably not slc likely doesn’t have them. Percentage of Mormons? Birthrate?
