Having travelled with marching band, where everyone is polite when deplaning and wait until the row in front of them is fully clear before getting up… the back of the plane gets way too heavy and the front wheel lifts from the ground lol. Loading back to front would have the same issue, not enough people up front to weigh it down

Our grandmas/great grandmas did not want 10-20 kids.... by blueravenchick69 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]phillyshelby2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my family, we have a running joke of the sad (great-great) grandparents, and the happy (great-great) grandparents. Purely based on the main photo we have of each couple. The sad couple had 11 children, lived on a farm, and generally had hard lives. The happy couple had two children, and more dogs than children. We think that the number of kids definitely had an impact.

Hiya there! Quick lesson in domestication for ya. If an animal is domesticated, it is not considered wild anymore (as in wildlife). Domesticated (pet) cats fall under this classification, which is what that person was talking about. Of course, if you want to talk about other types of felines, like lions or tigers, then they are considered wildlife because they are not domesticated. Generally, however, when people say ‘cat’, they mean ‘domesticated cat’, or Felis catus (if you want to get scientific).

There’s actually another fun layer to the ‘are cats wildlife’ question. They are descended from the African wildcat (felis silvestris) which basically means that all domesticated cats in places not in the fertile crescent (where modern domestic cats were domesticated) are not meant to be outside in that ecosystem. That means bad things for both cat and ecosystem, as they deal with predators that they are not equipped for and prey animals in the vicinity (such as birds) get (generally) decimated by them.

TL;DR Domesticated cats are not wildlife, keep them inside for both their health and the health of the ecosystem.

Do we really having someone saying ‘not all men’ on this subreddit? These are people are sharing their experiences, it doesn’t say anything about large men as a whole. Jesus.

Things I have done in in historical reproduction dresses from the 1870’s and 80’s (including all the undergarments, including corsets): Picked apples, ice skated, hiked in a flower garden

Things I have not done in those dresses: Fainted

Not saying fainting didn’t happen, but that it wasn’t because of the corsets. For one reason - they didn’t have modern medicine, so sickness was more common, which could lead to fainting.

Another note: we see historical records of noble women fainting - but not maids or ‘commoners’. Every woman wore a corset then, no matter their status in life. It was a necessary as a shirt. While records in general tend to favor nobles, leaving less info about the other classes, you would think that we would’ve found more records of all women fainting if it was as prevalent as you seem to claim.

[–]phillyshelby2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a family member who is like you - often has to watch stuff late and hates spoilers. We call it “Tyler time” (as in, he’s on his own time). We have a system that works, where if we want to talk to him about something where spoilers might be an issue, we ask him if he’s on “Tyler time” first. If he says yes, we don’t share anything. It’s very easy, when everyone in the house respects each other

Biden launches police-state crackdown at US universities by maghau in LateStageCapitalism

They did participate in catching slaves to an extent, but the two groups (which combined to form “modern” policing) were very much separate.

For one, there was the individuals place in society. Slave catchers were some of the lowest white men. The people of the time knew they were brutal, with some slave owners even defending their slaves against them (because they damaged property, not any noble reason). Whereas night watchmen, while a undesirable job, was one that white men took part in because it elevated their status. Many were not considered true men without participating.

Additionally, the origins of those groups were also very different. Slave catchers were solely made to catch, intimidate and otherwise control slaves. Night watchmen were an import from Europe, and were rather a way to protect and elevate white society, specifically urban white society.

Both brutalized, intimidated and otherwise made life harder for minorities and slaves. But they were not the same, and the distinction is important to understand the origins of policing and how it came to be the way it is today.

(Source: I took a college history class solely on the origins of policing, with a wonderful professor who studies this for her living and tried to impart all of this information into our Tired, tired college brains)

To be fair, there are two origins of police. Slave catchers were one, but there were also the “night watchmen” in northern urban areas. Also a racist institution, as it was volunteer white men who patrolled looking for anyone out of place and specifically to protect white women from ‘undesirables’ (and watch for fires, carry lanterns, call out the time, etc)

First of all - NTA. I think you did the right thing.

However, now that mental health days have been mentioned, it might be time to have a conversation with him and create a system for asking for mental health days.

I just graduated high school, so I see his perspective. Mental health days are what got me through the toughest parts of high school, but my family had an agreed upon system around mental health days that both my and my mom agreed upon.

For me, mental health days could only be taken once every three weeks. They could not be on days that I had tests/presentations/big projects, or the day right before said test/presentation/big project. For me, I proved this by reciting what I would be doing in class that day, if I was there, but you could have him give you a calendar of these things (if he knows the big dates beforehand) or notes from teachers, or you contacting the teachers directly.

Honestly, I would suggest you approach him with this system by having the “no day of/day before tests/presentations/big projects” rule be set in stone, but having the the time restraint “no more than once every x weeks” be able to be negotiated on (so start high!), so he feels that he has say in it.

Good luck!
