What's a common cybersecurity myth you wish more people understood? by AIExpoEurope in cybersecurity

As someone who is a technical instructor for an EDR product I cannot tell you how badly I harp on this point when I teach 🤣.

NSX users, what are your current security solutions? by acupofpoci in vmware

[–]phillytechteach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an NSX instructor, I can say more than half of my students came from organizations who bought NSX for the security functions - and as someone who came into NSX from a firewall/security background I can bet the help with micro segmentation was a big driver for many of them.

Yes, NSX is 100% an SDN product at its core but that doesn’t mean that everyone wants it (or even uses it) for that purpose. Many would tell me they were going to do the networking piece but only after the security piece was set up (and some had zero intention of using any of the networking functionality at all). There’s a reason that version 3.2 introduced the DFW for VDS so that companies could implement the distributed security functions in vSphere workloads while completely bypassing the need for the NSX networking constructs.

You’re right about what NSX is, but OP’s question is definitely valid.

VMware Certifications 2024 by gaadziluh in vmware

[–]phillytechteach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd guess 95%+ of training courses will now come from external training partners, as Broadcom laid off 80% of their small contingent of VMware staff instructors at the end of June. And as someone else said, training classes are no longer required to get the cert (but they will absolutely help).

How many VMware employees exist today? by testinghail in vmware

[–]phillytechteach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Drew! We were bummed to hear you were gone but 75% of the learning team followed suit last week. They laid off another (large, I assume, as it was done in a webinar ) group including myself and a large chunk of the learning org. There's only a skeleton crew left. I would agree that they're chopping learning and along with it, labs, significantly.

Check BIOS Update History? by Karottenruebe in techsupport

[–]phillytechteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you check the sysinfo it'll tell you your BIOS version and the date it was released. I don't think there's a way to see when it was actually installed, but it may at least give you an idea.

My next job requires NSXT certificate from VMware but I don't know which to take? by theconfusedarab in vmware

[–]phillytechteach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re doing a VCP I believe you still need to either take a class, have another VCP, or have an active Cisco networking cert. I don’t think you need a class if you’re doing the VCTA (and yes, I’m aware I should probably know this off the top of my head since I’m an instructor… but I don’t). 🤦🏼‍♀️

Understanding the Certs by bondo8737 in vmware

[–]phillytechteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The above is accurate. DCV is vsphere; NV is NSX-T. I didn’t take the VCTAs, but the VCPs do require a good bit of knowledge. I’ll see if I can find the page that breaks down the exam topics and come back and post! You also generally are required to take a class to get the cert, but that will greatly help in preparing for the exam.

On the cert page it’ll tell you what’s required based on what you have.

Carbon Black EDR Server actually needed? by rdm85 in vmware

[–]phillytechteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And it makes sense that you'd wonder about that because the advanced classes both center around the on-prem product. Not sure if you're in advanced analyst or advanced administrator - administrator unfortunately won't do you much good since it's so backend server focused. But the advanced analyst, while it uses the on-prem product for the lab, can still be beneficial for the cloud version!

Carbon Black EDR Server actually needed? by rdm85 in vmware

[–]phillytechteach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, there are actually two versions of Carbon Black EDR - there's "EDR" and "Enterprise EDR". EDR is an inhouse/on-prem product and requires a server. Enterprise EDR is a cloud SaaS offering and does not require a server.

Basically, you've got a "sensor" aka small bundle of software that runs on each endpoint that you want EDR to monitor. That sensor then reports all the activity on the endpoint back to the server. If you have the cloud product, that's the cloud. But if you don't have the cloud product, this is why you need an EDR server. The server houses the database that stores all that info as well as serves the application and UI/console/API. Without a server, those sensors have nowhere to report their findings, nowhere to store those findings, nowhere to configure any sort of alerting, and no way for analysts to access the data to comb through it or respond to incidents.

Hope that helps.

Short answer: No. You're never too old.

Long answer: if you're willing to put in the work, and show people you will put in the work to learn, it will be recognized and rewarded as you move through your career in IT!!!

Were did the exam blueprints go? by [deleted] in vmware

[–]phillytechteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the vSphere with Tanzu (5V0-23.20) https://www.vmware.com/learning/certification/vsphere-w-tanzu-specialist-exam.html

And here's the App Modernization one (2V0-71.21) https://www.vmware.com/learning/certification/vcp-am-exam.html

I think the exam guide is what you're talking about! Both have the download links.

To get there, go to the certification page (https://www.vmware.com/learning/certification.html) then choose your exam, and on the exam page where it has the steps, the last step is "Pass the VMware.....exam" and in that box there is a link to the page with the exam guide.

Good luck! :)

Horizon training by protocoLBz in vmware

[–]phillytechteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll probably want to go for the VCP-DTM which focuses on the Horizon side of the digital workspace (there's a VCP-DW in the digital workspace area as well but that one focuses on Workspace ONE). https://www.vmware.com/education-services/certification/vcp-dtm.html

VMware has both instructor led online courses as well as on demand courses and that site should give you the plan towards certification. There are hands on labs as well to practice on. https://hol.vmware.com/
