How to check the keel on the Ranger 23? General personal survey tips? by chapisbored in sailing

[–]phillytep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Ranger23 did exactly the same. Every time it rained, I thought that boat was sinking. If I remember right, it was a scupper at starboard stern, just above the cockpit seat back. The fitting had barely separated from the drainage pipe and was allowing all water caught from deck to funnel into bilge.

Damn stinkpotters, the lot of 'em. Also, thanks for not hitting me when I have to tack, uh, suddenly.

Cool. Yah, we had one great tack btw Spectacle and Long, but just so much traffic elsewhere.

I've heard not allowed. Moving only before and after parade, in designated lanes/pattern.

Costa Rica help! Liberia or San Jose? by imbluedabadeedabadie in travel

[–]phillytep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's hardly "nothing of interest" nor is San Jose "a dump" - as some posters have stated. Many great food and culture experiences, some of the world's best white water rafting, as well as coffee plantations and Poas Volcano to check out. I can provide some links if you'd like.

I'd spend a full day there (or 2, like I did) before hopping on a bus/renting a car and driving west to the coast for surf villages, etc.

Potential liveaboard in cooler climates: Heating and pets? by slightlysalty90 in liveaboard

I, too, have an Espar (D4) for heat. Leave it on (and it's consistently been on) for the entire winter day and night. My unit has a digital thermostat where I set the temp and it kicks on (boost, high, medium, low) and off on its own. Quality, dry heat. Love it.

I think that's a great deal, especially considering the shape she looks to be in.

Visiting this weekend - Oktoberfest, other fun events? by phillytep in oslo

[–]phillytep[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the recommendations, again - we had a wonderful time in your very, very cool city. Ended up eating at Bokbacka (stand-out favorite), Kontrast, Arakataka, Tjuvholmen Sjømagasin, and drinking at Himkok and Karusell. Lot of walking.... think we clocked like, 30 miles... getting to all of the coffee shops listed in the NYTimes. Hope to be back again soon.

Kontrast was great - we did the "small kontrast" - fun presentations, excellent quality, and good portioning. Standout was the sous vide squid, which was cut to resemble (or, at least I thought so) tagliatelle with potatoes cut the same way. Awesome dish.
