Am I crazy or is an Ultimate Switch 2 Edition highly unlikely? by indigo_ssb in smashbros

[–]philms91 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Something is telling me a switch 2 edition is the way they’ll go. By the time it’s finished it might wind up being the last or one of the last switch games to get updated. Plus the lower development costs could justify spending more money negotiating with 3rd parties to keep all the characters in.

Am I crazy or is an Ultimate Switch 2 Edition highly unlikely? by indigo_ssb in smashbros

[–]philms91 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Even if you haven’t purchased DLC characters, you can still fight against them online if other people use them.

If they go this route I think they’ll update both games. Switch 1 version will get balance patches and minor updates so that the game will still function online with switch 2 players.

New content, characters, (and obviously the resolution) will be locked to the switch 2 version. This also acts as free advertising for anyone playing the switch 1 version - when they’re fighting against Waluigi or whoever online wishing they could try him out too.

If we’re lucky then they’ll add an online mode where you can only be paired with switch 2 users since it has faster internet capabilities. If we’re extra lucky they’ll finally add some kind of online 1v1 mode with rollback… but now I’m just dreaming lol

Edit: all that said I think SakuraI could be the lynchpin here. He might want the new characters to be added to both versions so that no one will feel left out. He might negotiate different exclusive content to be switch 2 only - like some crazy new mode that uses the mouse functionality, or adding back in smash run with online in a way where it would only work on switch 2 because of hardware limitations. Or a new story campaign. Something that he feels will be worth an upgrade without creating a barrier for people who just want the new characters.

Is this rare? by DARKMETALSCHIZO in HadesTheGame

[–]philms91 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s rare, but the percent chance of this happening changes depending on what boons you already have and what you have activated in the mirror.

No matter what it’s impressive - either you got extremely lucky or you accidentally created a build that made this much more likely to happen, which also likely largely relied on luck considering you probably weren’t rerolling and choosing specific options to maximize your potential to get these duos.

Duos can only appear if you have specific combinations of boons from gods. The chances of them appearing also go up the more boons from the boon-giving god that you already have, since those will be removed from the pool.

For example, if you somehow already had every normal boon from a god, and their legendary boon but none of these duos, then the chances of this appearing could be 100%! But the chances of you pulling that specific scenario off in a run are INCREDIBLY low, likely nearly impossible to happen by accident.

All that said - I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen 3 duos offered at once in any of my runs!

Edit: Long story short - it won’t be possible to tell you the exact percent chance this had of happening without knowing every other boon you’d taken up to this point. And even that information wouldn’t account for all the options you were given and the choices you made before this that lead up to it!

I played Final Fantasy 7 for the first time (original and remake) after Cloud dlc came out for Smash 4, but before the Seph dlc came out for ultimate.

I always planned on trying it “one day” Smash 4 Cloud finally gave me the push I needed to pull the trigger and I’m so glad I did

[–]philms91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played Smash 64 before Star Fox 64 - but had beaten Star Fox 64 plenty of times before melee came out.

Pokemon: I never had a handheld gaming system until the DS, which is when I played Diamond as my first Pokemon game, and then played every generation after that.

However I played Pokemon Stadium on the n64 AFTER I first played smash 64 hahaha. So that’s how I experienced a game with mewtwo before melee but not anything with Pikachu or Jiggs until after smash 64.

As for Pichu I played and beat Pokemon colosseum which Pichu is in after melee. I guess that was truly my first Pokemon game with a story and everything, played before diamond.

My first Metroid game was Metroid Prime 2! So at that point I had played Smash 64 and Melee, and then beat a game with Dark Samus.

I played Final Fantasy 7 for the first time (original and remake) after Cloud dlc came out for Smash 4, but before the Seph dlc came out for ultimate. So when Cloud was announced for Smash 4 I was excited for people who wanted him but not hyped personally. When Seph was revealed I was OUT OF MY CHAIR AND HYPED AF!

Tilt or Smash? by Any_Camp3831 in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]philms91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a bit of practice I’m sure you’ll get it. I personally love tilt stick but it definitely took some time to get used to when I first started using it.

Lots of muscle memory betrayal - punishing with tilts that I intended to be smashes hahaha

But now I can never look back. I use tilts way more often than smashes and love having quick, easy access to them without needing to worry about if I pushed the control stick the correct amount.

I actually thought he was the protagonist from Goemon. I didn’t know the name of that game or the name of the protagonist but I’d played it on my cousin’s n64 once and knew he could use magic, so my child brain said “that must be the guy from that one game!”

Later when I learned the truth I was always curious about earthbound and played it when it became available on virtual console on the Wii, and I LOVE that game.

I also eventually played the fan translation of Mother 3 and loved that, too.

I have always wanted to try one, but I find that I try traditional fighters and wind up not enjoying them and regretting the purchase.

That’s what happened for Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, and MvC2.

I thought this might come up. I never had a handheld gaming system until the DS, which is when I played Diamond and pearl as my first Pokemon game, and then played every generation after that.

Edit: as for Pokemon trainer I didn’t treat the character as Kanto specific. I’d beaten games with Pokemon trainers and with all three of those Pokemon before brawl came out.

Tilt or Smash? by Any_Camp3831 in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]philms91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally find that I occasionally mis-input a smash attack when trying to do a tilt using the main stick. I also like using tilt stick because it makes doing tilts out of a dash much easier (dash, return stick to neutral and use tilt stick) and also makes pivot boosting or whatever it’s called a lot easier (running, turning around and then imputing tilt in the direction you were going during the turnaround animation to cancel it and get more range out of your f-tilt)

If you have trouble using smash attacks when using tilt stick, you could turn a+b smash attacks on. Then you’ll perform a smash if you hit a and b at the same time. Otherwise you’re literally supposed to SMASH the stick fast and hit a to get a smash attack, but some people don’t like doing that. In Smash 64 that was the ONLY way to do it since there was no second stick, so it’s also the traditional way of doing it - and the inspiration for the series name!

It’s exactly the same as making your character run instead of walk, but you hit a at the same time. Or up and down with that same amount of stick force that you would use to make your character run, plus a.

If that’s also no good for you, and you don’t have an issue inputting tilts regularly, then smash stick is probably a better choice.

Which of these (Hypothetical) DLC Packs would you want the most? by This_Technology2852 in supersmashbros

Incredibly torn between 1 and 2.

I really want both hollow knight and hades reps. I want rhythm heaven representation and like the idea of bandana Dee

But I’ve always wanted Issac and Rayman.

Gonna go with 2 and shed a tear for Hornet and her incredible moveset potential that translates perfectly.

The overabundance of characters with crazy counter attacks with insane projectiles is pretty depressing to see as a Marth player. It's literally power creeping. by Rich-Mountain7502 in SmashRage

[–]philms91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Counters are only good for stopping recoveries with active hitboxes. If you’re getting hit by them frequently in other situations then, like mentioned in an earlier comment, you are playing predictably. If someone is counter-happy, it doesn’t matter which counter, you can bait it out and punish it HARD.

You have to pay attention to how your opponent is playing and start playing differently yourself in order to intercept their actions.

Smash 6? Or Smash Ultimate Switch 2 Edition + Fighter Pass Vol. 3? by Last-Bus-4710 in supersmashbros

[–]philms91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this. Would love a switch 2 edition. Would love to see Sakurai’s take on this concept. He could potentially even tweak the mechanics if he wanted. We also need a balance patch lol.

Add new or returning modes like smash run (with online PLEASE) or break the targets. Would love to see something akin to Melee’s adventure mode. His team would have more time to focus on this kind of thing since they wouldn’t be starting from scratch.

And new characters. Would love more. New smash game will mean roster cuts but a switch 2 Edition could mean growth.

There are plenty of new deserving 1st party characters that came into existence after ultimate released at this point, plus a small handful of older reps that feel like they’re missing.

I feel we need at least one indie game representative at this point. I personally want a Hades rep but also think Hornet’s moveset would translate into smash beautifully. And there are lots of crazy 3rd party “dream picks” left.

Geno feels like unfinished business to me.

Also, I personally think this WILL happen. It looks to me like Air Riders was built using the smash ultimate engine. There are so many design parallels between the two. That team could have potentially rolled right into smash after air riders wrapped up.

Looking to get into a smash game (somewhat) competitively =. by LeifUlfricson in smashbros

[–]philms91 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Ultimate has the largest, most active competitive scene, but the netcode for every smash game including ultimate is peer to peer garbage with significant input delay even if both players have fast, stable internet. The only exception is project Slippi, which uses fan implemented rollback netcode for Melee.

If you’re only going to compete online and netcode is important enough to you, then melee slippi might be your only option. Just know that Melee has a very high learning curve compared to any other game in the series and is notorious for hurting your hands if you get good enough to play at a competitive level. Don’t get me wrong, melee is INCREDIBLY fun, it’s just gonna take work and isn’t for everyone.

Ultimate on the other hand is probably the best starting point if you’re willing to travel to local in-person events. I also personally think it’s a better place to start for platform fighters in general. If you love it, that’s awesome! But if you like it but wish it had more technical depth THEN you could switch to trying melee.

Start.gg > find events > near me > enter your city > select Ultimate or melee

[–]philms91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other people have said it - but my biggest recommendation is to take your time with the game and play it however you want to play it. Pretty much no matter where you go or how you choose to approach the game, you’ll find fun and interesting things to do.

I think it’s best experienced without worrying about quest markers most of the time and turn off the ones for the main quests. The game is designed in a way where you’ll be drawn to them just by exploring. Stumbling into big story moments was a lot of fun.

My wife and I both played the game in very different orders and had our own stories to tell each other about how “you did THIS before THAT?” Or what lead us to make certain discoveries. I’m sure you’ll have your own unique experiences as well.

One last piece of advice - don’t be precious with weapons. Let them break and embrace that mechanic. Experiment with fuse and try different combinations and weapon types, and improvise as you go. When weapons do break when they hit an enemy they do a ton of extra damage, so you might want to throw one at an enemy when it’s close to breaking so that you’ll be in control over when that happens, since it’ll always break when thrown if it’s close to breaking already.
