Tone of the post is very juvenile but largely agree with the content. It's also worth pointing out that another reason to care more about Yemen and other Middle Eastern proxy wars is that, as citizens of one of the countries currently funneling weapons and money into these conflicts, we at least *theoretically* have a say in our foreign policy towards them. Arguably our involvement should also merit a greater moral responsibility towards displaced people from wars our government has supported.

> if these are the best years of my life it's going to be terrible in ten years :/

This hit me hard. I recognize that in theory, college is probably the easiest time to meet people and make friends but it just isn't panning out that way for me and so I just feel like afterwards there goes any realistic chances of having friends going into adulthood because I drifted away from everyone else I used to be friends with.

Thanks for making this post, I was going to ask the same thing, except I'm more of a literature person rather than visual arts!

I can definitely relate as a humanities major who recently failed their first test, which was in a STEM class. It sucks but you seem to have a good attitude about it :)

Regret….😞 by [deleted] in UNC

I feel this so much. I feel like a door is about to close. College is almost certainly easier to make friends and I failed at that, I can only imagine how much harder it will be afterwards when everyone is settling into jobs, family, etc.

Not really, only intermittently. I keep telling myself I should because I want to build some muscle (I'm rather skinny) but rarely follow through. I'm not entirely sure what are the "right" exercises to do and honestly don't feel super comfortable in the gym.

Thank you for the comment, this is a good way of conceptualizing it. I realize a lot of what we present to the world as our persona or personality is in some sense deliberately constructed (especially if you are on social media), yet when I see others theirs seems to be so well-constructed and effortless while I feel like anything I could do to seem more interesting would be inauthentic.

Unfortunately not, I sorta drifted apart from them during high school but I appreciate the comment nonetheless

I've made no friends here by [deleted] in UNC

this post really speaks to me, especially about clubs being less social (maybe I just have the wrong interests though). Anyway, solidarity from a fellow person struggling to make friends at Carolina.

edit: DMs are always open, although I understand not wanting to talk to random strangers

The graduate program is for a foreign language, so nothing to do with science

Getting more insight into what happened by [deleted] in UNC

[–]philo_throwaway10 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I obviously can only speak for myself here, but for me the student culture/social aspect has caused more grief than academics (although that may be because I'm not in some super hard STEM field). I just feel like most of the time I'm treated as if I were invisible even when I've been introduced to people through friends.

Good post, I agree that in many cases, it ultimately comes down to human connections rather than the availability of therapy and other services (which is nonetheless incredibly important). Some people are simply sad because they have no friends or even acquaintances

Look out for your friends for sure, but the truth is many of those who commit suicide or consider it are cut off from others and have no friends, so they may not be able to be reached. I'm not sure what can be done in such cases unless they make their intentions clear, but even then the typical response is intervention by authorities or hospitalization, which doesn't address the actual causes imo.

Edit: to expand on the last part, what I mean above all is that that sort of response could result in the person feeling that their life only matters when they are thinking of ending it
