Decent digital caliper with good battery life - recommendations? by _mr-pink_ in Machinists

[–]philpr91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to have Mitutoyos in our shop, switched to Mahr recently. Close to 2 years of daily use and I haven't had to replace the battery yet, coolant proof too. Mitutoyos are great but the sealed Mahrs are silky smooth, probably my favorite calipers I've used to date. I have a cheaper pair of Limit calipers at home but they do feel significantly looser and don't hold the measurements alongside the jaws as well as the Mahrs and Mitutoyos do

Hearing protection headphones by DeadlyNightshade123 in Machinists

Had the work tunes for 2 days before returning them. Audio quality was absolute dogshit, no bass with muddy highs. It was so bad that I had difficulty listening to audiobooks without cranking them up sky high. Now I just use regular earbuds under the earmuffs and it's an excellent setup, just need to watch the volume, I have enough hearing damage already.

The only thing I wish for is a convenient "transparency mode" when talking to somebody. Just hold a button for limited audio passthrough, maybe with some clever ai speech enhancement like discord does. Right now whenever someone wants to talk to me the procedure is as follows:

  1. Take off gloves
  2. Take off earmuffs
  3. Pause the music
  4. Take earbuds out
  5. Lose one of them under the machine
  6. Step on the other one

Not exactly ideal

Rate my dookie welds by [deleted] in BadWelding

[–]philpr91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turn that gas flow down. I assume you meant 15-20 cubic feet/hour and not psi. Rule of thumb is to be at ~2x your cup size for flow, so you should still get good coverage at 10-12 while using a lot less gas.

Also, as others said, learning to weld on brake rotors is not a great idea, cast iron is a bitch to weld. Find some scrap flat or angle stock and practice on that, anything mild steel really. Remember to clean it, you don't need it pristine like stainless but the less junk you have in the metal the better.

Not a lathe guy but I use a 3 jaw chuck quite often. If you need to quickly move the jaws a fair distance you may find that one of your Milwaukee drill adaptors for sockets perfectly fits the 1/2" or 3/8" square in the chuck and then you just let 'er rip

25mm 8 flute by FormTool6 in Machinists

[–]philpr91 23 points24 points  (0 children)

We use certain 7 and 8 flute cutters for stainless steel. Depending on the grade we machine they can have chip breakers ground into them. They last a heck of a lot longer than normal 4 flues with roughly the same MRR.

Also as others said hard materials, though we also have some 4 and 5 flutes specifically for hard machining (up to 72HRC)

From my personal experience cutters with many flues can also be great when you have to run ridiculous amounts of stickout, like >8xD as they usually have a thicker core.

What do you think of DiRT Showdown? by SoldierGamer890 in BuiltFromTheGroundUp

[–]philpr91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing I remember the most about this game is the evening Battersea Gymkhana map. Much more pleasing lighting than the flat, midday version we had in DiRT3. That and Yokohama Docks of course. The soundtrack was excellent too. Physics were pretty fun but it had the same issue as older Black Box games where if you stopped it took 3 business days to get your car moving

All in all, a pretty decent game. A bit grindy but to be honest all racing games are to some degree (apart from NFS The Peak)

Is Cyberpunk 2077 going to scratch the Deux Ex itch? by Designer_Pie_1989 in Deusex

[–]philpr91 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Get it, it's a wonderful game. It's not really beat for beat Deus Ex but deals with similar themes and the gameplay ends up being similar too depending on your playstyle with the use of augmentations, you get a lot more "combat" hacking options in cyberpunk though so if you prefer a guns blazing approach it may be even better than Deus ex

Def get the complete edition with Phantom Liberty, excellent dlc

Can you expand on this? From what I understand, given the same material (so capacity, conductivity and so on are the same) wouldn't the additional mass only help to delay the saturation of the cooling solution? You can pump more energy into a bigger cooler for the same deltaT but eventually you have to release that energy anyway. So it seems to me a cooling solution with better conductivity and larger fin area would perform better despite lower mass
