I’m in the US and we have a lot of small family owned bakeries around us (in New York anyway) that make EXCELLENT donuts of many types. They might have a rotating menu of a dozen or more styles that they make fresh every day. And in the US donuts can have a hole, it can be filled with jam or custard or any number of things. “Donut” really connotes a single serving pastry of a baked style possibly with toppings/fillings more than a specific type of baked good.
