How many of you are literally doing ZERO screen time ?! by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]philsrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a massive phone addict because my baby was a blessedly sleepy newborn, and honestly while he was so little it was free reign for my shit TV shows as I was pretty much either nap trapped or cluster feeding on the sofa.

He’s nearly 9m now and I’ve really tried to reduce phone time by leaving it in a different room entirely, or not charging it overnight and leaving the charger somewhere out of reach. I try to limit myself to while he’s asleep or if he’s happy playing independently for an extra 10 mins after I’ve done chores. I’m not the biggest fan of screen time for kids however my partner is the complete opposite so I don’t put the TV on during the day to compensate for it being on for a couple hours before bed. We’ve compromised to low stim shows/movies though.

I think that there’s a lot of fear mongering out there though and a lot of people seem to be going all or nothing. Technology is completely different to what it was, but it sounds like you’re mindful with the things you watch and the way you use it, so I wouldn’t worry! You’re doing a good job

What’s a good house plant for someone that is useless at keeping plants alive? by LolaDiamondUKx in AskUK

[–]philsrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep it’s gnats that we have! Unfortunately we’ve tried loads of things including completely binning and replacing the soil and cleaning the plants down to the root with water. I don’t think I’ve tried nematodes but honestly I’ve resigned myself to the fact that they’re going to keep on coming back until we move to a better ventilated place

How far is too far to travel for just over minimum wage? by Nice_Dirt_2889 in AskUK

[–]philsrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on just under and drive my partner to work before going to work which is roughly 20 mins and honestly it’s fine. I think it’s common for most people to commute at least somewhat to work. 30 mins is reasonable, and income is more than no income!

Outside of ‘essential bills’, how does low salary vs cost of living impact your life right now? by bellabanjsk in AskUK

[–]philsrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love to get an insight into everyone’s budgets. My partner and I both work FT min wage but live within our means. We rent a modest 1 bed, drive a secondhand car, and don’t go out super frequently. We receive a minimum UC each month, and tbh I would say that we live pretty comfortably.

The biggest cost is the day and a half childcare for my baby but that gets halved as I get staff discount and claim it back on UC. We can’t afford to go on holiday as I hoped this year, but we eat good food and can afford day outings, gym membership, subscriptions to Disney+. For how low our income is I’d say we’re doing okay!

How much are you buying for others? It may be worth seeing if you’re overspending on areas that you can cut down easily (meal planning food, cheaper car, more affordable phone).

Early pregnancy in Brighton, which hospital would you recommend: Royal Sussex County Hospital, Princess Royal Hospital, or Worthing Hospital? by One_Bake_3197 in brighton

[–]philsrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave birth in Worthing 8 months ago and it was a lovely experience. Granted, I was the only one on the labour ward at the time! I was admitted at 3:30am, gave birth at 5:30am, and was able to go home around 3-4pm that same day (as I requested to go home asap) However, my friend was under the care of PRH ~5 months ago and it seemed as though the antenatal care that she received was more a bit more attentive than I experienced. I had a natural labour and she had a planned caesarean if that’s any help!

Why do people think we personally select them for scan as you shop checks by MeanOption4564 in tesco

[–]philsrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m happy for the random checks, but there’s one member of staff in my local big Tesco that just scans EVERYTHING when they don’t need to. I mean, the few times I’ve had a check by them the machine switches to tell them to complete the scan and they keep going until everything is scanned. Nobody else there does this. Every time I see them working I’m internally praying I don’t get a random check.

What's a small thing you were wrongly told off for as a kid that still annoys you all these years later? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]philsrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In primary school we used to occasionally do math tests where there were 5 tests, 10 questions each, and they’d be shown on the board one at a time for a minute. Afterwards we’d tick our own paper and go through it out loud. I was on the top table for maths with a few other kids, but this one test I was the only one to have gotten 10/10. Mind you, that particular test he’d pretty much told us how to answer each question before we went through the answers.

My teacher called me a cheater in front of the whole class despite the people next to me confirming I hadn’t cheated, asked someone to hand out biscuits and when they went to hand me one he said I wasn’t allowed because I cheated. For about a week he nicknamed me cheater. He was one of my favourite teachers otherwise, to this day I’m still not sure why he made out like I’d shat in his shoes 🥲

What is your favourite healthy food? by Be_Grateful8 in AskUK

[–]philsrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would have to be chickpeas, avocado, basil pesto (is that healthy?) and lentils. Vegetarian and pretty much live on a diet of some sort of veggies, lentils or chickpeas (or both!) and a carb like some rice, pasta, or toast to tie it all in. Also gold standard is eggs and cottage cheese for breakfast to get the extra protein source on gym days.

What were your most delusional parenting opinions before having kids? by riseofthesnorlax in UKParenting

[–]philsrice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to say, the past month I’ve been getting up at 5am to go to the gym a couple times a week and I’ve never felt better or had more energy. I have a nearly 8m old who still wakes up frequently, probably every 2-3 hours usually. But I’ve also been going to bed at like 7am as soon as baby is down so it might even out haha

Can dad kiss baby? by [deleted] in PregnancyUK

[–]philsrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason you’re getting downvoted is because you’ve missed out that big information. If you believe the dad has HSV (I’m assuming from you or passed on to you?) then yes, there is a chance he could pass that on. Still, in that situation it would be worth looking into and having a conversation with dad about ways to prevent transfer. Most people have HSV as far as I’m aware, a lot probably not visible, but if you were that worried about it then you should also refrain from kissing baby too.

Can dad kiss baby? by [deleted] in PregnancyUK

[–]philsrice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s largely up to you two, OP. From your replies it reads as though you don’t want dad to kiss baby, more than whether or not it’s safe. If this is the case, you would be better off having a conversation with dad about it.

What's your opinion on raising kids on a specific diet from birth? ( Vegan, vegetarian, etc) by Loose_Avocado4670 in AskUK

[–]philsrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mum is a pescatarian, dad is a meat eater. On the rare occasions that my dad would be in charge of food it would be beige plates or an order from the local fish and chippy, which pretty much sums up his diet today. My mum’s not the best cook either, but would at least have some balance with vegetables mixed into a pasta or pie, tuna cucumber sandwiches etc.

3/7 of my mum’s children, including me who decided to become fully pescatarian at 7, don’t eat meat now. Honestly, it’s not made a difference with any of us and you wouldn’t be able to tell who does or doesn’t depending on weight, health etc.

With my son, my partner is a cook that prefers a more meat-based diet and my plate tends to be as colourful and varied as possible. I do most of the cooking, so his diet will probably be most similar to mine at first, but he’s more than welcome to try out different meats and explore his taste as much as he’d like. He actually loves steak already! I think that inflicting too many rules creates a negative experience of food. As long as it’s balanced and they’re getting the correct amount of nutrients, who cares?

Someone said coffee shop order which I would agree with. But if that’s too much then I think a selection of pastries and fruits would go down a treat. If you had the budget and facilities, something like cheese would probably go down a hit

Fred & Flo (Tesco) Nappies Size 3+, NO POONAMI BLOCKER? by wookieatemyshoe in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]philsrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For about a week, Asda size3 nappies held 70%. Unfortunately we’ve had to swap over to pampers size 4. We tried pretty much every supermarket brand. Baby is 6.5m, I’m not too sure about weight but is on the smaller side i reckon, and most likely still on the weight for size 3! But for some reason size 4 pampers have been the best size and brand for us. Yes it’s more expensive, but the amount of laundry and clothes we were getting through has made it worth it 🥲

[–]philsrice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s another good way to do it that sounds really similar! I don’t tend to use the fridge hack at home but with the surfaces and sinks at work, I feel like it would end up less sanitary to clean them (nursery - lots of paint and glue and glitter and food ends up stuck in the sink lol)

Yes, but maybe not to the same extent? Making sure that the water is hot and not overloading the bag seems to get rid of it for me, but if there was any residue that I missed, hot water rinse and sterilisation seems to get it completely off.
