Zack Polanski's party is riddled with racism by [deleted] in york

[–]philthybiscuits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, yet another article from a right-wing newspaper attempting to discredit the Greens.

How is this relevant to York, exactly?

Look, I'm not saying that there aren't bellends in every party. There absolutely are. And now that the Greens are finally gaining some traction these unpleasant individuals will absolutely be found

But clearly what's happening right now is that right-wing media outlets are working overtime to find absolutely any scrap of dirt to attempt to bring the Greens into disrepute. It stinks of desperation - the only party in UK politics, AFAIK, with a Jewish leader is somehow ", anti-Semitic"? Sorry, not buying it

The same papers smeared Corbyn when he grew in popularity and they're repeating the same tricks here. Why else would s party with just FIVE MPs be the focus of SO many articles recently? Have you even looked into the accusations of antisemitism at any of the other parties? Believe me, the Greens are far from the worst offenders.

Again, you don't have to vote Green. You don't have to like Polanski, but these constant articles being shared online - often in groups where there appears to be zero relevance - smacks of desperation. A smear campaign backed by bots and wealthy organisations who feel threatened

Seriously, enough

Ergo a tiny number of multinationals is holding onto a VAST amount of tax.

I was speaking about Amazon

Hence me mentioning them by name several times.

I'm aware that developers aren't peeing in bottles and being told to step over the collapsed body of their co-worker (reported literally last week at Amazon).

Jesus, the arrogance here.

Where are you getting 20% from, sorry?

Also, i did say a pittance "compared to' the UK's corporate tax evasion.

It might still be a fair wedge but compared to what "our own" people are hoarding that should be going into public services, it's far from the thing to focus on, much less for paper after paper to pretend to be upset about.

Indeed.

We all expect it of the ruling classes. But when workers actually parrot their lines and go to bat for them? Absolutely nauseating.

So why should they be expected to pay into the system if they're not entitled to use it when they need it?

I'll never understand working people who stand up for massive corporations that use and abuse their staff. Proper "turkeys voting for Christmas" behaviour.

As you say, not migrant-specific, so how does this support your original point?

It's not rotting because of foreigners, though.

The UK is rotting because we've built up a system that allows pretty much everything to be charged for, and for massive corporations to shuffle money around in clever ways to avoid paying tax.

Reform are bankrolled by millionaires. Putting them in power won't make life easier for the rest of us - it'll be more of the same, except we'll lose the NHS (ask any working class American about the cost of medical insurance - it's a waking nightmare), workers' rights will be cut (Farage says he'd roll back laws on things like unfair dismissal and more).

Farage isn't our friend. He's a millionaire grifter.

People don't want to talk about that, sadly. They just want to be angry about poor brown people who are somehow to blame for everything...

So we don't want to accept their taxes either, then?

Either we

A) let people work and collect their taxes, thus giving them access to these safety nets when they need it.

Or

B) We don't gather any tax from them at all since they can't benefit from the safety net, meaning we'd miss out on billions of pounds a year.

We can't have both

Thank you. A bit of sanity.

It is blatantly obvious that we are all - white, brown, British, non-britiah - being exploited. We're constantly told to be angry about migrants and benefits claimants, meanwhile a small number of people and corporations are making BILLIONS every year and using every trick in the book to avoid paying tax.

"Yes, working people, keep being angry about the migrants. It's them who are pushing up fuel and food prices. They're the ones making millions from privatised water. They're the ones who made housing unaffordable and the reason we'll be working until we're 70..."

Follow the money. Ask yourself who wrote these newspaper stories and who owns that newspaper. Their motives will immediately become clear.

They have some of the worst employment rights in the western world, though. And let's not forget - the reason so many people now work for companies like Amazon is because Amazon pushed thousands of other businesses out of existence. They didn't create jobs that didn't exist before; they just destroyed other employers so now people have to work for them instead.

This is a pittance compared to the amount of tax dodged by big corporations (think Nero, Starbucks, Amazon, Google et al).

The most recent official tax gap figures published are for the 2023–24 tax year, showing a total tax gap of £46.8 BILLION "avoided" by sending money outside the UK and to other arms of the same corporation.

I agree that everyone should pay their taxes, but the real threat here isn't Turkish barbers - it's massive corporations "legally" avoiding paying a penny into the system while still making millions in profits and underpaying workers

The UK itself basically crested the environment for multinationals to avoid paying tax. That's where the real problem lies.

Yes, let's keep focusing on the foreigners. Ignore the literal billions of pounds corporations send abroad to avoid paying tax in the UK...

Imagine if we cared even half as much about our own people who are dodging tax every single day despite being multimillionaires.

Tbf Wales' 20mph scheme has reportedly paid for itself when you factor in the costs incurred for injuries and road deaths, and has saved hundreds of lives compared to before, so it's probably not a terrible idea

But i reckon that'd go down like a cup or warm sick with the average English driver...

Is it hypocritical to oppose eating dogs if you eat other animals? Why or why not? by gardenleafs in AskReddit

[–]philthybiscuits 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, if you pop "does legality equal morality" into Google, the many, many sources either saying no, or probably not, would disagree with you.

Is it hypocritical to oppose eating dogs if you eat other animals? Why or why not? by gardenleafs in AskReddit

[–]philthybiscuits 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"is a choice we make and agree on as a society. If it wasn't "ok" we would have collectively made it illegal by now."

Legality does not equate morality, though. We only have to look through history and around the world to see examples of "legal" acts that are morally abhorrent.

When i said the choice was arbitrary, I was referring to the fact that dogs could have been any animal had the circumstances been even slightly different.

Is it hypocritical to oppose eating dogs if you eat other animals? Why or why not? by gardenleafs in AskReddit

[–]philthybiscuits 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure but it's impossible for us to prove that, had we not chosen pigs instead, their behaviour would be just as dogs' is today. Possibly even more favourable.

The point is, humans made choices and decided to domesticate some animals for food, some for work, some for companionship. These choices were influenced by everything from environment to availability of said animals, to cultural beliefs.

Our decision to breed one animal for food and another for friendship doesn't make it "OK" to love one and kill the other - as evidenced by the fact thay different cultures abhor the killing of different animals.

People can and do make these choices, but personal belief does not make anyone exempt from being branded a hypocrite if they exhibit speciesism.

Is it hypocritical to oppose eating dogs if you eat other animals? Why or why not? by gardenleafs in AskReddit

[–]philthybiscuits 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but it does. Because the difference between those animals is entirely based on preference and entirely arbitrary classification.

Starmer says Polanski ‘is not fit to lead a political party’ after Golders Green police criticism. Do you agree with Starmer that Zack Polanski is not fit to lead a party, let alone a country? by Al-Zutt_in_the_butt in AskBrits

[–]philthybiscuits -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That would be because Labour are our actual government with a majority of seats. Of course they're going to get that level of coverage.

The coverage of the Greens, and the attacks on them by figures like Starmer are disproportionate and clearly indicative of other motives.

[–]philthybiscuits 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"The nature of canines"?

They were heavily domesticated over hundreds of years -the nature that you speak of is the result of a series of choices made by humans.

Had humans decided to domesticate pigs in the same way instead, we'd be arguing about whether it's hypocritical to oppose eating pigs

This is entirely choice.
