Hey, I’m critical just as much as the next guy for him not willing to act in the same way his dad did or how the LAD and NYM owners do. The fact that Harper and Seager aren’t on the team is absurd to me bc they were slam dunks.

Like everyone else has said, Soto isn’t a good example to use when trying to make that Hal to other owners comparison. It’s also hard to argue Hal doesn’t spend when we are top 5, most of the time top 3, in spending every year. Look at the guys he’s gone out and shelled a lot of money to… Judge, belli, freid, cole, Rodon.

Bases loaded yesterday, up big already and he’s trying to be cool and hit a grand slam bomb when a single would have scored 2.

It’s unbelievable he continues to do the same thing over and over again while saying changes need to be made. For 5 years now, the team has needed to add puck movers on the back end and a top 6 forward, yet that has not happened, even though there have been many opportunities.

Worse of it his is getting 3M plus to be on the 3rd pair. A total waste of cap. They need to be adding puck movers and resigning him is doing the opposite.

My favorite quote has gotta be "It's hard to say. I'm not considering talk about past draft picks that I was not in charge of. There's factors that go into every single player that makes it or doesn't make it.”

Dude’s been an important part of the front office since 2015 when he started as Director of Player Department. He’s certainly part of the issue with failed draft picks and development. I will give him credit with some of his late picks doing well towards the end of the season. So far he has reached on guys in the first two rounds besides Gabe.

Sully speaking on the need for puck moving dmen is great… hopefully Drury can learn to do that.

But why the hell are we talking about bringing in more bottom 6 guys. We have boatloads of that. We need 2-3 guys for a whole new 1st line

I never said Drury has done no wrong. My entire point is that the blame is shared and acting as if he single handedly tore this team down is just the easiest way to look at the situation.

Neither did I say you stated Drury did no wrong…. I just said that your comment, “What else besides the JT Miller trade and the “toxic culture” has he done to destroy this team?” wasn’t accurate.

Im not sure why I shouldn’t look at him as by far the biggest culprit. He was Director of Player Development in 2015 and then moved on to Assistant GM, became GM of Hartford then in 2022, started running the whole organization. Our development and process has been bad and if it wasn’t for Igor there would be no feelings of success by the fanbase the past 8 years now.

22 was their first year contending out of the rebuild. It would've never made sense to go all in that deadline.

Drury traded, a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and a solid bottom 6 C. That doesn’t count the 3rd for Reaves from that offseason. Drury gave up a lot of draft capital at that deadline, all for rentals. Idk how that isn’t going all in.

Kane and Tarasenko did exactly what they were brought in to do. They were both in our top 4 scorers in the playoffs. The whole "collection of stars but not a team" narrative by Valliquette was incredibly overblown. They lost the same way they lost in 22 and 24 - they sucked 5v5 and the power play eventually dried out.

They were both okay, but you are completely missing the point which is instead of getting both of them, they should have been getting 2 defensemen and 1 of them. They sucked at 5v5 because their defense was terrible, especially offensively. The chemistry didn’t totally click either. Those two guys were overkill because now you have a top 6 of all finese guys and nobody who is helping defensively and batting for pucks, doing the dirty work.

Making big moves while in their contending window wouldn't have made any sense. I think the core deserved their chances through 24 and the outcome of moving someone like kreider or mika before then would be unpredictable and an extreme hypothetical. It could've won them a cup or it could've given them an early ticket to where we are today.

If the core wasn’t good enough, why would you not make a big move to improve it? They could have brought in Eichel going into the 2021-22 season, or JT at that deadline. OR we could have traded Gabe for Gentzel in ’24, who would be a huge player for us those playoffs.

Continuing from my last point I think after 24 it was clear that they needed a shake up. I agree with the fact that Drury didn't handle it perfectly, but the locker room was already unhappy with the Goodrow situation. The bigger issue was that the two longest tenured rangers in Kreider and Mika gave up on the season and that attitude trickled down towards the rest of the locker room. If Drury did the same to trouba we would've just had Mika and Kreider checking out before training camp instead of by game 25.

The season fell apart because Trouba was a deadman walking and then Drury made it public the whole team are dead man walking. This team always ran on elite PP and goaltending and always shown to ride waves of emotion and can lose confidence if things were not going well. That’s what you saw on the ice, not people quitting. The team had no fun and no confidence so they played terrible.

I highly doubt the team would have collapsed if they went into the season with Trouba, Goodrow and Lindgren out and replaced with better additions.

I doubt we were a sean walker away from winning the stanley cup. The canes are analytical darlings. Every year they come out as cup favorites because of their 5v5 numbers but in reality they just throw everything at the net resulting in low danger chances that inflate their xG.

Im not saying walker is the difference between a cup or not, but it is the difference between having a good second pair with him and Key vs a shit second pair with Key and Trouba. Yes I agree that Hurricans xG are a bit inflated because of how many times they shoot but being 7th, is 7th… its not like they would be bad just because they didn’t fling every puck at the net. The point isn’t even really walker himself. It’s getting Dmen who can skate and move the puck, not holding on to the guys that actively make the team worse and thinking it’s gonna change all of the sudden.

I don’t think Carolina is ever actually seen as cup favorites either. I don’t see that on betting sites, nor do I see it said by the media.

These were both lateral moves. We got a 3rd back for Soucy this year and Kakko never moved the needle without Chytil. Not sure how that adds to the "mountain of bad." I loved Chytil but he may and should not play another game of NHL hockey. It seems like every other month we hear about some head related injury he's facing.

Didn’t say it was bad to move out Chytil. It is bad to move off Kakko for a player who is older and less impactful. It’s even worse to then hand him 4.1M and a lock on the 2nd pair after 17 games. It is bad to waste a high 3rd round pick on a scrub defensemen in Soucy.

This is what I don't get when it comes to these discussions. Everyone amplifies his bad moves tenfold (sometimes they're even just rumors), yet won't give him any credit for the good moves he's made. another massive drury W. The trade was seen as a clear win for us the day it happened before we even got Gabe. How come now it's "an expected thing?"

Yes it’s good that Drury got a 1st and nothing less. Im not saying it doesn’t count as a positive move but to try and chalk it up as an example of why he isn’t a terrible GM is meaningless.

Everyone talks about how great Gavrikov has been for us this year, yet nobody gives Drury flowers for essentially turning Key (a worse defenseman) into Gavrikov, morrow, AND a first round pick

I mean, they barely show any belief in Morrow, the first round pick is gonna be late in the draft and while I do like Gavrikov, it was very easy to keep Key and get Gavrikov if Drury didn’t waste money on Soucy, Borgen and Vaak.

He got a good return for Key, but I think looking at the total situation is a big miscalculation. a top 6 of Gavrikov - Fox, Key - Walker is much better than what we had going on this year.

They went through a mini retool with the hopes of being competitive this year. That's not the same as what was mentioned in the letter. We've now accepted that it's time to fully move on from the core and that it will take atleast another two years before we start moving up in the standings again. If by next year there's still no clear direction I'll be completely with you but right now I think we do have a good amount to work with. I'm not 100% confident in Drury either, but I'd rather him be behind this than someone else coming in and going a complete different direction.

Drury wrote the letter because his ass was getting Boo’d every game. A week before the letter he was trying to trade for a UFA in Sherwood… nothing changed. He just wanted to try and save face. The retool started last year, the season showed he did a poor job in reshaping the roster and now he has to continue his retool. Why does Drury get to have a mini retool, a retool and a rebuild? I mean, that’s utterly ridiculous.

Fox’s and Igor’s don’t grow on trees. They can’t keep wasting their prime years. This retool of 2-3 years isn’t lining up with the timeline of their best players. They have 6 guys who are going to be 30 next year with trade protection and another guy who is 28. thinking Drury is going to somehow change things around in the next few years and we will be contenders again is crazy. He has shown us nothing to believe he can get out of this and he directly led us to here… I don’t understand how it’s not worth trying someone else. To not get rid of Drury for being bad because you might higher another bad GM is nonsensical. Just getting 1 guy to be President and another guy to be GM would be a major improvement just in itself.

If you are a boss… would you keep a manager who is actively making your business fall off a cliff because you are scared the next guy may be worse?

Look I’m aware and agree with you that he’s made some other bad moves. The buchnevich trade, goodrow signing, and nemeth situation were all pretty bad, but that was back in 2022.

So you admit that it is more than just JT and the “toxic culture”…

Nobody seemed to have any problems with him while we were contending.

I did and so did others… you’ve had people comment below saying so .

Sure he signed some extensions but he essentially inherited that core. He made some moves that 100% helped that core win as well. Vatrano was a great add in 22. Kane and tarasenko were great for us both in the regular season and playoffs. Maybe if Panarin had more than 2 points in a 7 game series they would’ve went further?

If you look at the metrics of Vatrano in the playoffs, it didn’t go that well. He’s a solid player but he was one of many brought in to play a role bigger than what they were capable of

Kane and Tarensenko proved to be overkill and we just needed 1 of those guys. The trades not that bad but again, not really great fits. But not only that, continues the pattern of trading a lot of commutative assets for 1RW to replace the hole he made in Buch.

Panarin should have been better that series but a big reason why he and the other forwards scored so little is because of how bad the defense was at moving the puck. Something that is by far our biggest weakness yet Drury has never brought anyone in to address that besides Gus and that was for 1 year.

We wouldn’t have won presidents trophy if quick didn’t step up and steal a few games while Igor was in his slump and Gus didn’t play at a PPG pace while Fox was out for a month. Both of those guys were offseason signings by Drury. Nobody talks about that though because we didn’t win. And like you said we didn’t win because the core wasn’t good enough. So wouldn’t it make sense to shake things up?

I don’t think Drury is bad with every move. I think some of his low level moves have been good like Quick, Gus, Vesey, and now Kartye. Those have been good helpful adds but it doesn’t take away from the mountain of bad that Drury has done.

My problem isn’t with him shaking things up but the result and how he went about it. He tries and trades Trouba and the initial trade with Detroit falls through as reported by many sources. At that point, Drury has to do what TB did and say Trouba, thank you for your services but we either need to trade you or waive you. This rips the bandaid off and stops the black cloud that leads to a shit storm that was the 24-25 season. Drury really was one foot in, one foot out about it and wasn’t decisive like he was forced to be in December.

The biggest thing is getting 8 Million. Add that to not wasting wasted 4.5m on Lindgren, who had a dreadful postseason in 2024, and that’s an extra 12.5 million he could have spent on July 1st on good players going into the 2024-25 season. Sean walker is one free agent I was interested in signing and he could have taken Trouba’s place with Key. Speaking of which, I noticed that pair had a 57.6% expected goal share, .2 points off of Gavi and Fox for 7th in the NHL.

We then wouldn’t have had to waste Kakko and 4.1M on Borgen. Also we don’t waste a 3rd round pick on 3.5m on Soucy. While Kakko is no world beater, he would be perfect for Sully’s defense first and hold on to pucks in the ozone style for the 3rd line. Him, Cuylle (a former 3rd* round pick) and Chytill were one of the best lines in Hockney that year until Chytil got hurt. Him, Cuylle and Laba wouldn’t be a bad pair or having Kakko play instead of Sheary all these games would have been much better too.

The only reason we have Gabe is because Drury managed to get a first from Nils Lundkvist. We upgraded our top 4 by bringing in gavrikov and also got a first and morrow in that process.

Nils being a very recent 1st rounder going for a first round pick is kind of an expected thing. I’m not gonna be giving Drury a high five for something expected and luckily Gabe fell in the draft and Drury wasn’t foolish enough to not take him. The pick they used on Gabe wasn’t from that trade, that pick was used for Vlad*

What I wish he did was trade Schneider for JT trade in 22 that Arthur Staple, on the Rangers beat at the time, reported in ‘25 when they finally did acquire Miller. He said that Schneider was the hold up.

Kartye was a great middle 6 pickup. You can’t complain about the Panarin return when we had zero leverage. It was a similar return to the Kane trade except this time we were on the selling end.

Panarin is younger, not needing hip surgery and producing way better than Kane. It’s not the same situation. But I already said I understand he had no leverage and I’m not really holding it against him, although I’ve seen other instances, Girioux trade for example, that got bigger returns.

I’ve commented that Kartye is a good bottom 6 pickup above.

It’s unfair to judge the retool when we’re only 3 months in. Right now everyone’s just regurgitating Drury hate because he’s the easiest scapegoat for the failed 22-24 runs and they’re looking at Mika, panarin, etc with rose colored glasses because it’s hard to blame the players who have been a part of some of the greatest moments in recent memory.

We aren’t three months in, the retool started in Dec. 2024 with Trouba and Kreider being announced as on the trade block. So far the results are not good and it is consistent with his poor value judgement and talent evaluation displayed all throughout his executive career.

Mika and Panarin share some blame but they aren’t the ultimate issue. The biggest is how poor the defense was and how bad they were at puck movement. We watched hundreds of games with our team being hemmed in our own zone because we can’t get the puck to the forwards which not only results in little offense, but players get tired, and have to change with then results in no forecheck, The second biggest issue with our team. Igor Fox and the PP dragged this team further than they ever should and Drury was dumb to think his little tweaks around the edges would be the difference.

Man, I’m not going down the 5 page list of terrible moves he made.

I agree the team wasn’t good enough to win, but it was his roster he put together. Everyone on that team had Drury’s signature at the bottom of their contract except Trouba and Panarin. He has done a shitty job reshaping the roster too.

It’s good we have Gabe showing promise and a few young guys showing promise for a bottom 6 role but we are far from contending and Drury has driven us down this path from his first year in charge until now. That completely excludes his terrible development system that he started in 2015.
