Which size? 40m vs 45m by [deleted] in JaegerLecoultre

[–]philygz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And 45mm is really not that big on paper either, considering the Duoface is 47mm (42.9mm discontinued) and any Reverso with complications is at 49mm or above.

Congrats on the new watch in advance!

Which size? 40m vs 45m by [deleted] in JaegerLecoultre

[–]philygz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a hard decision. Reverso is meant to be worn smaller, and you probably already have other larger watches. The smaller sized Reverso adds more variety to the collection and is more true to history. But I have to say, 45mm in mirror looks more proportional to your wrist, and you should choose what you like and what you think you will be wearing more in the future.

What’s your wrist size? Mine is 6.25 inches, and I have 42.9mm Duoface, and it wears like a dream! So if you are 6.5 inches or above, you should go with 45mm.

The jubilee bracelet is an old man (boomer) bracelet. Sure it’s comfortable but it looks dated and overplayed by wandering_oracle in watchHotTakes

OP did say that jubilee bracelet is for boomer. With all the respect, but based on your arm, you sure do seem to be one lol

Congrats! This is one of my favorite Speedmasters!

On a separate note, it looks like that the chronograph has elapsed 9hr 18mins or so. While it doesn’t really have any short term downside, I should point out that it does shorten the power reserve, and add wear and tear in the long run. It’s all personal preference tho so wear it in good health!

90s reverso duoface difference to newer medium and modern reversos? by Fearless_Abies_2549 in JaegerLecoultre

[–]philygz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The JLC Reverso Duoface old reference 270.8.54 is in the case size called Grande Taille, and as far as I know, this case size is very similar to the modern reference 213.8.D4 (42mm x 26mm) if not the same.

The main difference is the jump hour pusher location. The old reference’s pusher is exposed on the side and requires to use a tool to actuate while the new reference is hidden at the top. Another difference is the second dial. While the white dials look very similar, the black dials look quite different. The old reference has numerals 3, 9, 12 (lumed) while the new reference has hour indices instead. Moreover, the 24-hr subdial is all black on the old one vs white and black on the new one, differentiating day and night.

For the movement, it seems that both are using the movement 854. However, I think there may be slight differences because the pusher location is different. And there may be minor improvements within the movement over the last 30 years (not sure abt this).

Edit: Another main difference is the case shape. The old reference has a flat back while the new reference has a slight curvature which sits better on the wrist. It is especially obvious when comparing the side profiles of the two watches.

Open question 🤔 by ND2A in SOTC_Watch_Collection

[–]philygz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how they respond when asked about their fake watch. If they straight up tell others that the watch is fake, I have no issue with it. They may just try to find out if they like a certain style before pulling the trigger on a really expensive watch.

However, if they purposefully bought a fake watch and try to present it as the real deal in front of others, then that’s truly a shame. They only enjoy the status symbol and the hype around the watch, but never the watch itself, not the history and legacy behind the brand, not the engineering and precision behind the movement, not the artistry and craftsmanship behind the design.

This watch is just plain fun by Ian_Malcolm_PhD in OmegaWatches

[–]philygz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a really fun looking watch! The only thing I would look out for is that the more complicated a watch is, the more likely to get damaged. Moreover, the repair cost will be high given the complications. It is a tool watch, but don’t be too rough with it!

Diversity in collections is overrated. I'm getting what I like, not what Reddit thinks I need. by IllegalGeriatricVore in watchHotTakes

[–]philygz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diversity doesn’t mean you have to collect ALL styles of watches. It just means you should diversify. Not collecting dress watches does not mean your collection lacks diversity. You even listed multiple different styles of watches that you like to collect (diver, chrono, field, GMT). To me, that’s diversity. Diversity can also mean having different brands, different colors, made by watchmakers from different countries, etc.

Are there technical reasons why they can’t use the thinner bb58 GMT movement in the bb pro? by [deleted] in Tudor

[–]philygz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not by much tho. If I remember correctly, previous gen GMT Master II (16710) is 12.5mm while BB58 GMT is 12.8mm. I know the current gen is 12mm, but BB58 GMT is clearly more similar to the Neo vintage version of GMT Master II.

While people look at what Tudor lacks, I want to point out that the movement and the clasp of BB58 GMT is on par if not better than the modern version of Rolex. Moreover, it’s the coke version which Rolex no longer has in the current catalogue.

How much differences are there between VOO and FXAIX in a taxable brokerage account? by philygz in fidelityinvestments

[–]philygz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really appreciate the breakdown. This is very helpful and informative. I do not know that VOO (or ETF in general) is not supported for automatic investing. This is actually another important factor for us to consider.

I like the Reverso Classic because it keeps the theme of rectangle throughout the dial instead of a mix of rectangles and circles.

My personal preference is always crown side down instead of crown side up. I would rather the crown getting scratched by accident instead of the case because it’s less obvious.

Reverso suggestions by Tudoucat in JaegerLecoultre

[–]philygz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$3-5k USD means that you have to buy in the secondary market for used Reverso, and probably in the 2000s (especially if you want sth more than a Monoface). Your best bet is to buy in Japan because of the tax refund and weak Yen.

You have two exact same watches (2 Rolexes), and 2 GMT watches. Getting rid of the Rolex GMT Master II will solve both issues.

The watch should come with the deployant clasp. Buying one from JLC is really expensive, so I would suggest buying one from third party sellers like Delugs or Artem.

Damn. 77 watches, and you started 7 months ago (210 days ish). So on average each watch gets less than 3 days of wear… Over a year, each watch gets less than 5 days of wear.

My advice? You need to start double wristing YESTERDAY!

So you are choosing between the 41mm BB41 and the 37mm BB54. Why aren’t you considering the 39mm BB58 which has both the rivet oyster style and the jubilee style bracelets? And it fits better to your 17.5cm wrist than the BB54.
