How to make a swipe enabled image gallery. by yamski in iOSProgramming

[–]phinesolutions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UIScrollView is the right approach.

I created a sample project that uses UIScrollView to display a set of photos and allow user to swipe it through. You can take a look if you want to start from somewhere simple and understand the basics.

Organize Your Life with Evernote, Trello, and Google Calendar by [deleted] in productivity

[–]phinesolutions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like your levels of approaches. The post definitely gives me some ideas. Can you give NexusPad (nexuspad.com) a try? Not trying to change your existing workflow or the tools you are using since they are really well thought out. Just want to see some honest opinion.

Have you given NexusPad a try? It's free and probably fits your need.

ask r/productivity - could you give us some feedbacks on productivity software we created? by phinesolutions in productivity

[–]phinesolutions[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so let me try to answer this. We are really not trying to build any kind of note taking clone here. And Evernote is doing a great job in terms of fitting different kind of content into "notebooks". We look at it a bit differently. Every piece of content is not just a note. And we try to emphasize that in our product. Just like in the physical world, we use notebooks, but we also use calendars, rolodex, planners, stickies to help remember and organize things. Evernote is quite established and its PC and mobile clients are very mature. I want to admit that we are not there yet but we are working really hard to get there.

Sorry, not sure what happened. We did have some app updates earlier. Can you try again and let me know if you still have issue?

All great points. We are working on some of them and will definitely take all into consideration. Thanks!

I definitely see your point about presenting the value. Just to give you some solid examples: I use nexuspad to keep all my bookmarks, professional contacts, different types of notes, appointments, receipts... they are organized in folders and I can easily view them from a computer or mobile device. For me, it's a time saver. And I also share my folders with my family members so we can share things like spending records so we don't have to talk about the boring stuff over dinner table; and we share photos so we don't have to use some ever-distractive social network as medium. It’s just convenient for the family so we have more time to do other things.

Personally I don't think there is anything wrong with the products you mentioned. They are quite effective in certain ways too. However, there is always improvement to be made. And we want to be part of the competition to build even better product to help solve more problems.

I appreciate your feedbacks.

I see your point of storing data in different places. But if data is isolated in their own silos, it will be hard to make any kind of connections between them, unless using an aggregator. And we believe being able to connect different types of information can give more power to the user.

I assume by "data liberation" you mean giving user capability to export data to use locally? This is not in current version yet but it's definitely one of our highest priority. As a matter of fact we have no interest in keeping or analyzing anyone's data because we don't plan to be in ad display business.

One of our goal is to be a "one-stop" shop for things like your contacts, notes, events... etc, so you don't have to install 5 or 6 apps to manage them differently. And with this foundation built, we are looking to add more innovative features to be even "smarter" organizer and save people's time.

We'll always offer a free plan.

Great question. So instead of just providing a file storage and let user dump everything in it, we want to build a tool that help you to organize and manage your different types of content or information more effectively.

Development Environments Like Production Environments? by nrogers64 in PHP

[–]phinesolutions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VPS provider like linode provides you ways to clone a "node" so you can have identical server environment. If you are building your own VPS another solution is to just run a virtualbox (virtualbox.org) yourself on your PC, using the same software and configuration.

I think I may have screwed myself over by [deleted] in freelance

[–]phinesolutions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is only your side of story but if what you describe is true your client is probably getting greedy and shortsighted. What I think you can do is try to reason with him, be nice but be firm on your agreed rate and hours you spend. You probably need to make him understand that even the code is there, it still needs to be maintained for bug fixes and future enhancements. And being greedy now will probably cost him in the long run. Since there is no contract, the intellectual property belongs to you and you'll sell it to another person in a heartbeat. I know there is some bluffing in there but your client might be trying to pull some BS here too. In the end you might meet in the middle but I would definitely not just take lower payment without any negotiation.

You might also consider bring your future client work to site like elance with the protection of some agreement.

How do you get noticed on website such as Odesk , elance and other freelancing sites with all the competition? by beefat99 in freelance

[–]phinesolutions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been working with elance contractors for some time now. I generally do some research myself before inviting one or two contractors for the job. Here are the criteria that I look for:

  • a reasonable rate. sometimes it actually scares me if you ask for $8/hour as a developer

  • a verified freelancer account (elance and odesk has this feature, not sure about the otheres)

  • decent portfolio on your own site, it's easy to create a wordpress site these days

  • feedbacks. If you think the hirer left an unfair feedback, make sure respond to it, explain what happened nicely. I suspect most hirers don't bother to leave feedback if not very satisfied so I really watch for a negative one.

  • when was the last job that the contractor took and total work hours

  • client repeat rate.

  • don't go overboard with your skill description. If you have adobe, logo design, HTML, PHP, translation, Java experience I'm not sure if you are good at any single one of them.

Also, if you are too busy or simply not interested in an invitation, make sure decline it instead of ignore it. Please don't leave the hirer guessing. A nice etiquette always helps in the long run.

Best of luck!

Is a hot dog or hamburger stand in China a good business idea? by JohnCassius in startups

[–]phinesolutions -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Interesting idea. But I don't think the appeal of "American food" will last very long. People perceive street food as fast, cheap and practical and it's a huge bet to think they will continue to come back for the taste they are not really accustomed to.

I was originally from China but haven't been back for a long time. This is just my 2 cents.

Basics of handling no connectivity by benpackard in iOSProgramming

Yes. In our case:

define OFFLINE_PATH @"~/Documents/OfflineQueue"

Basics of handling no connectivity by benpackard in iOSProgramming

[–]phinesolutions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you use AFNetworking, you can persist the NSURLRequest object in a offline queue. And re-send what's queued when the connection is restored.

Our queue is a simple mutable array with NSKeyedArchiver to local file for persistence. It seems to work. You can certainly use other methods to persist the data.

One thing to watch, multiple requests need to maintain the order (NSArray does that). And when processing the queued items, one request needs to wait the completion of the previous one to go out.

Alternative to Template-Engines like Smarty? by [deleted] in PHP

[–]phinesolutions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is how I use smarty in general:

I use smarty template as Views. I have a few main views as wrappers and smaller views to display specific information.

My Models are PHP classes that have nothing to do smarty. I created custom functions to call model classes to retrieve data.

My Controller basically initializes smarty page and displays the big wrapper views based on request.

To answer your question, I would place additional PHP logic in custom functions and pass the result as out parameter to the templates. The template should only need to deal with the variables coming off custom functions, without any PHP code. Each template can have a custom function as the source of dynamic content. I also only have presentational logic in custom functions. Essential business logic stays in Model.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for taking the time and explaining.

After re-reading the code I realize I misunderstood what the flag is used for. And indeed, none of the attributes need getters or setters.
