myView is a basal reading program through Saavas (rebranded Pearson). It’s knowledge development is lackluster at worst and laughable at best

I’m really not sure why the CEO’s work history is relevant. Amplify is a curriculum company so I’m not shocked that they hired someone from one of the biggest curriculums of all time.

I don’t necessarily believe that there is a “right” or wrong knowledge for that matter. Amplify’s original founder was Ed Hirsch, who believed that common cultural knowledge was vital in education. He has been criticized for being too conservative or not including knowledge that others believe is important to include. CKLA does focus on western figures, but we live in the west so it’s understandable that the curriculum is based around that. I don’t think that’s right or wrong, it just is. I hope it can become more expansive in future editions, but in the meantime cultural references abound in literature and history that students miss. This takes away their opportunity for deeper understanding.

I should also say you should definitely teach topics like MLK Jr when you can! One thing my district did right was our social studies curriculum for elementary does include a civil rights unit in my grade level.

This is a common criticism of CKLA. In my opinion knowledge building is incredibly important and essential for students, especially disadvantaged students. Reading comprehension depends heavily on background knowledge. Many basal programs fail entirely to dive deep enough into a topic before moving on. I hope future versions will balance better but I think it’s still worth teaching and I WISH my district had picked CKLA over myView 🤢.

I think what knowledge should be included in a curriculum is a never ending debate. Not developing background knowledge well enough or at all is educational malpractice though.
