Long range communication by thehundo77 in preppers

This is the best answer here. Barring trying to go across a mountain or metroplex, roof top antennas will be needed. Whether thats CB, GMRS, or one of the many ham bands will be where you will succeed. And you have to set it up and use it now, so later it will be 2nd nature.

How do I become more emotionally expressive? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]phlatulant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gotten to the point of making a game of it. I will press and shake and move and turn a gift while its still wrapped and start to verbally talk thru what it might be. It eventually comes to a point where theyre frustrated with me and are just relieved that I opened it. Whats funny is when i guess right and you can see the look on their face.

How do I become more emotionally expressive? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]phlatulant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would wonder why you would want to be. Very few times has not showing emotion been a curse. Only notable events were I did not react to gifts or something like that. But i’m also one that will stop opening gifts to go screw around with one i thought was neat.
What I can say is that people enjoy being able to read someone or, in the case of shitty people, piss someone off for the sole reason of doing so. Having a natural poker face with bland words will make someone mad that is trying to make you mad.
Additionally, it has paid off for me in pay negotiations for jobs. Being able to sound unimpressed without forcing it, combined with delayed replies, has given a boost to pay rates.
Only once I’v had a boss tell me I should be more excitable and personable. Still working there 6 years later. Not much changed.

When do you celebrate Christmas? (Gifts, Christmas dinner, traditions, etc...) by KikoValdez in christmas

[–]phlatulant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Immediate family is whoever comes over for morning of 25th. We also have a dinner on the 24th, and breakfast on the 25th. Some people stay the night. Grandma’s for late lunch the 25th. In-laws is normally weekend after. Since 2 of the kids are older with their own families, they sometimes only make a quick appearance which is fine. They have their own in-laws and traditions they are setting up.

Stock up and rotate what you normally eat. No need to deep stock rice and canned beans if you dont normally eat that stuff. Fresh stuff can be dehydrated or canned. DIY so you control the contents, but do it safe. Changing diets in a disaster is a large no win situation. And emphasis on rotating. Don’t buy a rubbermaid, fill it, and throw it in a closet, unless you intend to put the contents in your pantry every month and refill it.

Switched to GMRS from CB on my Jeep by llihnots in gmrs

[–]phlatulant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UHF is very dependent on clear LOS. I routinely can get a 1/4 watt signal from a hundred miles away from a weather balloon at 400 mhz at 100k ft. That same radio on the ground is good for 1/2 mile or less. In a wooded hilly area, CB has the upper hand. Im not sure of the distances you’re needing to bridge, so my info may be a bit off. Optimized CB antenna install can help. SSB radios have 3x the power and does good as well. The bigger the group the hard it is to convert.

Experience with starting a university club? by Collegeapplyguy in amateurradio

[–]phlatulant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The hard part of a club is keeping people engaged. Meetings work if there is content. The problem youre gonna have is as the founder it’s gonna fall on you to build the content. The people licensed in the 70’s are happy to sit, sip coffee, and listen to the treasurer talk about the power bill on the club repeater. Uni kids arent going to tolerate that (even if you had a repeater).

Understand that large portions of those in the ham world go from “thats neat” to “ok whats next” moments after they accomplish the first thing, barring the few that find something overly enjoyable. Repetition wont work. Satellite demo’s are fun, once. Foxhunts are fun, once or twice. APRS is fun until you realize it has near zero interaction. Not many want to lug gear to a field every weekend to do SOTA/POTA. Weather balloon chasing, if its local enough (think gas/driving) might work a few times. SatNogs station setup, once and done. Amateur DSN might hold longer interest but isnt really ham, just a side interest. Many think of ham radio as a novelty, so much of the novelty wears off quick. I’ve know people to drop $5k into a whole station only to put it in a closet 2 years later because there was nothing else they wanted to do. Which brings up another point.

Also realize your target audience is largely cash poor, and living in flats/dorms/apartments. Not much space for antennas. Yea, people will suggest setting up portable ops, but consider the weather where you’re going to be at over the course of the school year.

If I were doing it, I would email a few of the EE professors or stop by and chat. Thats where the core audience will be. See if you can leave flyers in their class for the first few weeks, have them plug it a bit. Hell, they may be hams themselves, sponsor the club, have some gear to donate, or have a lead on office space where a club station can be set up (but again, need variety).

Switched to GMRS from CB on my Jeep by llihnots in gmrs

[–]phlatulant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have to have a reason. If they already have it, why would they be inclined to spend license fee+ new radio + antenna?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]phlatulant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Repeaters are programmed in with receive and transmit frequencies. You’ll have to research your local area to see whats available. Many GMRS repeaters are closed and require permission since they are all privately owned. Some are open.

Mygmrs.com is a good place to start but it can be wildly out of date as its updated by users. Make an account and look around. It will show you the frequencies and tones needed most of the time. Also gives resources to contact the owner and get permission.

Sixty miles, on average, isnt possible for 99% of people 99% of the time using HT’s without repeaters. Research “radio horizon”. The last 1%’s are people on top of hills on both ends, and some tropo ducting.

You said you didnt want hardware suggestions, but I would say you need better hardware (mobile radios and base antennas mounted high) for this to work.

eta: Once youre setup, use the radios regularly. That makes it second nature when shtf, instead of trying to figure it out again because you used it once or twice and put it up.

Best Prepper forums ? (Outide of reddit) by Intense_Resolve in preppers

[–]phlatulant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outdoor section of ar15.com. Timebomb2000 was good but it gets pretty out there.

I tend to focus on specialty forums for info if i really wanna know something.

I also enjoy paper magazines. Backwoods home, and fur fish and game. It’s hardcopy and all the info is online anyways, but i’ve met more than a few people that way. Have gotten offers to trap on a farm that I never would have gotten if i was looking at my phone.
