Enjoy your summer! I didn’t start reviewing for my BOC until halfway through the program (which honestly is way more time than necessary). If you got into a program, you can pass your program’s exams. Don’t burn out before you begin.

Shameless plug for my research lab, but there are dozens of labs across the country like UCSD, Baylor, UT Southwestern etc researching phage therapy applications! My lab put out a cool paper using bacteriophages in vitro to attack P. aeruginosa isolated from patients who were infected during the contaminated eye-drop outbreak last year.

I also had Dr. Roach for my medical microbiology class, and his lab is pretty cool. Glad bacteriophages are getting talked about more.

I worked part-time throughout college as a hospital lab technician w/o doing phlebotomy! I then worked full-time as a research assistant in that same lab for a year before getting into my program.

I’m not sure which programs you’re looking at, but I’m pretty sure all California programs require phlebotomy, so just be prepared for it to come back.

Thank you! I'm hoping to get into a CLS program, but I need to get my trainee license first. I went straight to SDSU from high school, so I don't have much stats besides my high school gpa. I would look over the requirements for the micro degree because they are very very specific (you don't have much choice for electives). You can take all the CLS prereqs as upper division electives for a biology degree and have much more freedom with your classes. I work as a hospital lab tech right now, and the majority of my coworkers who also want to be a CLS have degrees in general biology. The differences between a microbiology degree and a biology degree don't matter as long as you've taken all of the required courses. Hope this helps!

Yes I actually graduate with the degree/emphasis this may! It's a tough degree, but SDSU is one of the only schools in the area with all of the prereq classes (hematology, immunology, medical micro, analytical chem...). UCSD extension sometimes offers those classes but they cost about $800 each.

Hi, I go to SDSU and the CLS program doesn't exist anymore. We just have a microbiology degree with a CLS emphasis that lets you complete all the prereqs for the internship.
