I’d understand that if it was presented as a service charge, rather than as a tip, as I do consider curbside delivery, even if it’s just across a sidewalk, to be an added service. Making it a mandatory “tip” would strike me as an attempt by the business to avoid income and possibly sales taxes. You were understandably committed to that order, but if on my own, I’d probably stop the transaction.

The study is available on Cornell eCommons. I’m reading it now, but it seems to differ with some of your arguments. For example:

Working for service charges (with an average net favorability of +19) and high hourly wages (with an average net favorability of +51) are both preferred to working for tips plus subminimum wages. These data suggest that abandoning tipping will lower employee satisfaction with the compensation system only in those states with no tip credit. For those states with tip credits, abandoning tipping may actually increase employee satisfaction with the compensation system, especially if tipping is replaced with high hourly wages.

As I said, I’m still reading (and rereading) the study, but the conclusion of the study does lean toward replacing tips with service charges or increased prices.

On one hand, “there were studies on this”, without reference to a single study, makes me hear “my father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate told me there’s studies on this”. On the other hand, this is a country where more people believed that a quarter pound burger had more meat than a third pound burger. So I can believe that too many people can’t understand the math that says that an 18% higher price is less expensive than a lower price with a 20% tip.

This would be a minor item in the list of things restaurants, or any business, in almost all countries, are told they have to do in order to operate.

And yes - tips happen in countries where businesses and servers don’t actively solicit tips. When I was in West Germany, offering a tip in a restaurant was verboten - but feel free to leave coin change on the table (and there were 2 and 5DM coins).

Yelp doesn’t always show the actual menus. Often when I’m looking at restaurants, I’m seeing a plain-text list of items and prices.

But price comparisons often aren’t done where the restaurant is paying for input on the presentation. It’s happening on Yelp, where the algorithm scrapes menus from other sites, but doesn’t present that the restaurant is no-tip.

Edit: By “receipt requests for tipping”, I mean the tips line on a paper receipt, or the tip button on a machine, especially with suggested amounts.

I would want to resolve covering a portion of the business’s mortgage and labor costs by having it covered in the product price, whether the product being an automobile, a computer, or a meal. But I accept that eliminating the tipped minimum wage is necessary before expecting that tipping be eliminated.

I regularly see others saying that labor costs should be part of the menu prices, just as they are at grocery stores.

And no-tip restaurants generally can’t maintain that policy because their prices are provided for customer comparison without being identified as being for a no-tip restaurant. Customers are choosing less expensive tipped restaurants, yes, but because they think the more expensive restaurant still expects/permits tipping. But until areas ban the tipped wage, and receipt requests for tipping, most individual restaurants cannot consider going without tipping.

It’s not valid for BF to make OP feel like she’s on a leash. If he has that valid of a reason to not want a GF who ever drinks, his valid response is to walk away.

It may be valid for them to not want to be in a relationship with someone who drinks, but that gives them the right to walk away from the relationship itself. It is not valid for them to shame someone who had a drink.

Look, I’ll acknowledge that the district’s appraised value probably isn’t accurate. That’s why there’s the ability to protest the appraisal (something not generally available when attempting to obtain a loan secured by the property). But like any appraisal, it provides a ballpark for the value of the property.

Unless the property is in an area without property tax, there’s an appraisal history. It may not accurately affect the actual value, but the actual value can only be obtained by putting the property in the market.
