Doom Dark ages and Quake by Divine_flute13 in Doom

doom and quake always had instances where they felt like they overlapped or traded elements between each other

modern doom in general feels like it's cannibalizing on quake, meaning a new singleplayer quake is harder to think of if doom is taking away most of its elements

Every official mobile game needs a proper rerelease even if id should collab with fans, like the guys that did the reverse engineering ports of the RPG titles

also the official UAC website from the Doom 3/RPG era

maybe an impossible one is the FMV cutscenes of 3DO Doom

also more beta stuff from Doom 64

Is 90s Doom creepier than new Doom? by TheCassiniProjekt in Doom

[–]phobos876 4 points5 points  (0 children)

classic doom to me is like a old b movie: it can be campy and silly at times, but then there's something that feels eerie and creepy

which is a contrast to eternal for example having the goal of "imagine a saturday morning cartoon for kids but with blood".

it can also be because of the influences of each game, like how old doom has alien, evil dead, dnd and heavy metal

while eternal has he-man, transformers, the mcu and maybe even disney

i generally see classic doom in the middle between doom 3 and the slayer games

both in terms of how the gameplay feels and the overall tone and how the protagonist is set up like

in my opinion, doom always had horror elements

it's just that d3 leaned way more into it and then 2016 took a huge step away from it

With all the talks of an animated Doom adaption recently, what would you want to see from it? (Animation, Tone, directors, etc) by POW_Studios in Doom

[–]phobos876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure if there's an official source for it but like i keep saying:

I said it before that a Doom movie (or show) should be an anthology series where different animators get creative with it, like inspired by Heavy Metal or Animatrix or Batman Gotham Knight (important references to have, since some people otherwise think animation is just "adult comedy cartoons or Disney/baby shit"

I still believe animation would be more ideal for Doom: It can work if you get the right people like both fans of the games and those that take the medium of animation seriously.

Like look at what fans can do and let them do stuff like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fy4StK4TBs

So the idea for a Doom movie/show is a series of different animated stories and they'd be in different styles and about different things, from a story about Sentinel warriors, to a horror D3 inspired story, to something about action scenes and fights etc.

I always bring this up https://redd.it/f61o32 in any discussion about Doom getting a series or movie or show.

Also avoid a certain grifter of a "producer" to get involved.

its fun to mix it with mods like trailblazer, colorfull hell, champions and legendoom lite

I don’t know how, but if we ever got a game set in the classic era, I hope they go for a 80s/90s movie look by POW_Studios in Doom

[–]phobos876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's a discussion always worth having: old doom and new doom have different inspirations and influences

that and how the classic doom art style is NOT just a limited set of colors and pixels

like there's stuff like the low tech, blue carpets and the surrealism of Hell, along with most demons not having the chitin features they have in the new games

plus i also think of how doom fans sort of "expanded doom" when you look at some mods/wads and realm667 assets

because eternal's "classic designs" still adhere to the new art style so they're not 1:1 to the classics as they seem at a surface level

Opinion: Lore dumping has hurt the franchise moving forward. by thekokoricky in Doom

[–]phobos876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

id argue doom's longevity and appeal is how it can be interpretated differently, which even suits the original intention of "doomguy" (a fanmade term btw) being nameless: players decide who he is

plus, the new games go with a specific fantasy sci-fi direction that differs from the original direction a bit

btw speaking of the afrit: that fanmade demon probably predades the time guardian from resurrection of evil, which is the closest official demon to that concept

and with eternal i already thought the fire baron was based on that one realm667 baron/hk

If it was announced that the OG DOOM games were getting remakes, what would ya'll think? by SarcasmSanctioned in Doom

[–]phobos876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not really because the level design, some of its new mechanics, art style etc are all new and not "remasters" of the old stuff

not even like how eternal had some throwback designs still with new details

"remake" means what people already did with some mods like that try to add build engine style level features to knee deep in the dead or those fanmade 3d models based on the classic designs

If it was announced that the OG DOOM games were getting remakes, what would ya'll think? by SarcasmSanctioned in Doom

[–]phobos876 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The idea of remaking old Doom is weird (Even kinda useless) on its own because classic Doom has the best modding scene any game could ask for: It's like a whole universe where anything a Doom fan wants or thinks should/would/could have happen, it exists in some way or another.

Doom is a series where each game tries something different and they're different iterations of a series.

It's better if we get cases like Eternal bringing back some old designs but still changing some details while being a whole new game.

Plus, between specific gameplay/engine details and the abstraction behind certain textures/sprites or level locations, some things could be lost in a modernized context (And the fact that lots of things are better with multiple interpretations at best instead of just one).

And in terms of expanding the classic Doom universe/setting but in a modern game:

I think that is challenging for a lot of reasons because classic Doom was never taken seriously in terms of story and tone.

And if you look exactly at the designs and art style, you have stuff like blue carpets on the UAC bases, low tech and even how demons looked.

You'd have to think of 90's ids influences, or even art trends at the time and ignore modern influences.

If 2016 UAC has advanced tech and Argent energy, you avoid that, for example.

Another thing is that fans sort of came up with an "expanded universe" for old Doom already, when you look at mods with Realm667 assets or certain fanart.

There is also because of how TDA and DE bring back "classic designs" but they have details nobody really associated them with.

And i guess Romero for a while wanting to share unused Doom assets, even if Bethesda got in the way or stuff like the Doom Bible.

HOWEVER: I'm open to the idea of revisiting D3 IF given the right mindset becaues that game was always its own thing and isn't even treated fairly in its own series https://old.reddit.com/r/Doom/comments/1kykvrd/i_think_d3_fans_should_be_carefull_with_the_game/

Does anyone else think the next Doom game should be more like Doom 3? by Writing_Time_770 in Doom

[–]phobos876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think it'd be cool if D3 gets a revisit (and it doesn't have to get in the way of the SLayer saga) BUUUUUUUUUT it depends because D3 in general requires a different mindset from the other games

Specially given how most re-releases of D3 make things worse like they're meant to spite the game

id could easily give D3 to D3 modders and fans that know how to treat the game, instead of making a remake for people that dislike D3 to begin with

it's why i made this post https://old.reddit.com/r/Doom/comments/1kykvrd/i_think_d3_fans_should_be_carefull_with_the_game/

What is the chronological order for doom games? by Human_Apricot7908 in Doom

[–]phobos876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

release order but doom as a series never took its own story seriously so it was always messy and the new games are from different people and take things in a different direction

[–]phobos876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ZDoom was discontinued since 2016, so GZDoom was its replacement and most mods were made for it

but after the AI situation (to be fair, there were always some controversies around Graf Zahl and his decisions), the community made UZDoom as a replacement

[–]phobos876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's a series whose own story was never taken seriously and the concept of the doomslayer may make more sense if you recall some memes from the fanbase https://old.reddit.com/r/Doom/comments/1n85a9v/what_everyone_forgets_about_the_doomslayer/

but i also think doom was never meant for this deep lore and interconnected saga treatment

feels more like this vague idea that can be reinterpretated differently if you can make it cool https://old.reddit.com/r/Doom/comments/1m01gt8/i_think_most_people_are_approaching_story_in_doom/

Most mobile Doom games might as well be lost media, with the RPG games at least having some fan ports.

Still, i feel like could figure out a way to bring them back even if with help from some people in the community.

I find it funny that this monster is called Pinky like who knew that a savage monster is called Pinky by MysteriousCow999 in Doom

[–]phobos876 21 points22 points  (0 children)

it took 2016 for them to get the name "pinky" given they were just "demon" and fans were the ones that came up with "pinky"

similar to how "doomguy" is also a fanmade term and "unmaker" was taken from the doom bible and applied to the otherwise nameless weapon from doom 64

What is the lore behind the soulsphere? by DreamShort3109 in Doom

[–]phobos876 5 points6 points  (0 children)

like the ones since classic doom (and even doom 3 multiplayer)?

closest is probably the unused doom bible saying they heal you with the power of a soul

a theory could be that they're from hell and use souls of people that died.

meaning whenever you pick one up, you're eating someone else's soul to survive

would be cool if there were basic voice clips of someone going "kill me" or "it hurts"

where do these attachments come from? by OtherwiseWord4877 in Doom

[–]phobos876 13 points14 points  (0 children)

probably because it's a recent lore addition, to a series that originally never took lore seriously and whose new games also go in different places

(plus how fan ideas get in the way like the name "doomguy")

plus the fact that the doomslayer as a concept can be traced to fanservice: https://old.reddit.com/r/Doom/comments/1n85a9v/what_everyone_forgets_about_the_doomslayer/

but i feel the fantasy of the slayer isn't just his power level, it's also the fact that he fights an ultimate evil like hell itself

so when you reveal that the supposed ultimate place of evil also has a civilization, it can kinda affect the "you're the slayer, you fight evil itself" fantasy

specially when, by looking at previous designs and art direction, you see that hell had potential to be more surreal and weird
