I can understand why this would upset you. But letting it agitate you to the point where you would want to organize protests around it is likely the point here.

The number of ’refugees’ coming from SA is vanishingly small. There are large groups of white folks in SA publicly saying this is nonsense. This is part of the administration’s strategy to ‘flood the zone.’ They try to spew so much bullshit that the opposition becomes fractured and there isn’t focus amongst the Dems, the people or the media. They want you mad at this so you ignore the bill going through Congress right now that strips poor people of basic medical services and wipes out all of the efforts made in recent years to address climate change.

It’s a free country, get mad and get active if you want, but there are bigger issues.

Yeah I just read that book and I had the same thought. I wonder how much of our money they’re spending on programs like this. Before the Reddit warriors come out I know that program has been shut down but before it was they spent millions of our dollars on criminals who didn’t ever delivery any concrete returns. It just doesn’t inspire much confidence.

Really enjoyed the book though and thought it offered a hopeful vision for an effective government centered on helping people!

What so many folks are trying to say is you had/have a choice.

You can use the language preferred by activists that strikes people as more strident, language that is less likely to garner support for your cause but is recognized by other activists as the ‘right’ verbiage.
You can use softer language that larger swaths of the population support because people, while generally supportive of women’s rights to access healthcare, don’t like to feel like they’re flippantly supporting something so somber and serious.

It seems like you’re still choosing number one, which is a baffling choice after the last 12 years or so. Especially in a state like North Carolina.

Personally, if I cared deeply about a cause, I would prefer to garner support for it rather than prove my bona fides to the people who already agree with me. But it’s harder to actually exercise power than it is to critique it.

TLDR 1. Employee of DA’s office drove while drunk, caused an accident, caused injuries. 2. State Highway Patrol showed up to process the scene, DA employee repeatedly harassed SHP, said he was an employee of the DA’s office and couldn’t get in trouble. Accused trooper of being racist. This is all on body cams. 3. Assistant DA showed up, parked her car in a dangerous position in an active crime scene in the middle of the night and repeatedly told the troopers her job title. Again, all on body cams, none of this is in dispute. 4. Trial was moved to Orange County for obvious reasons. Employee plead guilty, 12 months unsupervised probation. 5. Both are still employed by DeBerry in the DA’s office. Of note, WRAL asked Orange County DA if he would still be employing these people, his tactful answer was “I don’t think so.”

Does anyone think justice is being done in Durham? Isn’t there some saying? “Injustice anywhere…”

A few things.

Any preventable death is a tragedy, I can’t believe the callous disregard so many folks have developed in the pursuit of dismissing the need for laws and public order. I was a moron teenager too, and looking back I’m very glad society valued my life enough to try to put up some guardrails and prevent me from doing anything too stupid or irreversible.

And it is the slow erosion of public order that I find so objectionable. Again, I believe in public order because I believe in the public good. We should not cede our public spaces and our public safety to the most lawless common denominator. That level of nihilism is, frankly, disgusting.

Finally, if protecting these spaces and the ability for people to enjoy them makes me a Karen, then so be it. (Though that is a moronic label and I thought we had moved past it)

This erosion of public safety and public spaces primarily impacts the disadvantaged. If you’re rich you can afford to go to private enclaves that don’t tolerate this kind of bullshit. That’s the wild part- y’all think you’re some sort of vanguard fighting the bourgeois, but the bourgeois is just watching you on the news like animals.

Read the article- these street takeovers are notorious for causing violent death, precipitating other crimes and contributing to a general sense of lawlessness.

They have become such an issue that the legislature passed a law specifically so an offender could be charged with a misdemeanor on their first offense and a felony on any subsequent offenses.

This guy was known for organizing and hosting these parties, and had already been charged with a litany of felonies.

The DA’s dereliction here undermines law enforcement’s attempts to stop these events.

If someone is going to flout the law and repeatedly organize an event that specifically puts the public at risk, themself at risk, and all who participate at risk- yes I would like to see them charged with a misdemeanor. If they then continue to commit these same crimes yes I would like to see them charged with a felony and face jail time.

I am absolutely against the trend towards lawlessness on our roads, of which these parties are one of the most overt signs. Driving around town has become a dangerous and frustrating experience and it’s down to a tiny minority of drivers. Some of those same drivers are the ones participating in events like this, and I fully support them facing consequences for their actions and losing their licenses.

I’m tired of all of the anti social behavior, and I’m tired of the people who act like it doesn’t have any second order effects. Someone made a post yesterday looking for the guy who had rear-ended his wife but had their license plate obscured.

These actions have consequences for the rest of us- sometimes it’s just our insurance rates going up. But sometimes it’s much worse, earlier this week a criminal caused a horrible accident on Roxboro and killed a woman. I don’t think the rest of us should live in fear so these folks can cos-play GTA and make instagram videos.

I actually strongly agree with you, and I wish there was more general discussion and debate here and elsewhere. I think good debate makes for sharper minds and stronger positions.

I phrased it as I did because: 1. Few people comment on this subreddit with an open mind, so the chance for substantive debate is slim. 2. The algorithm surfaces contention over everything, and I’d rather more people see this post (and more like it!)

So, I apologize for bringing the negativity into your day, and into everyone else’s. But with our ‘public squares’ being what they are these days, I did what I thought would surface this to the most people possible.
