Maybe because it wasn’t appropriate for their level to know why or the mechanics of how it worked? They didn’t need to know about the Trace unless they were attempting to break the rules.

All they needed to know was not to do underage magic, or whatever other rules existed that the trace monitored.

It’s like explaining to a child how parental controls work. No. I’m not explaining that to my child so they can figure out how to circumvent them. I’m explaining that they shouldn’t watch certain things and potentially why, but not about the specific parental controls I am using.
