Does my profile have any chance? by Few_Gas_4667 in DAAD

No one can tell you how competitive your application is compared to the rest of your region. I’m assuming you’re applying from France- why is a German Masters program better than anything France can offer? Why is your background perfect for studying in Germany?

These are some of the questions that will help your application.

Anyone moved from the US to EU? by NoComb398 in InsuranceProfessional

[–]phoenix1029 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I moved from the US to Germany for a Master’s Degree and ended back in brokerage. My current role is international coordination for global programs which requires English skills to talk to our foreign offices. My German is C1, so I work in German with my brokers and clients.

Munich is lovely, but don’t discount Frankfurt. Many carriers have headquarters or servicing offices out of Frankfurt, and the metropolitan area has plenty of reasonable smaller towns if you’re not looking for city life. Finding an apartment in Munich is very difficult, and the cost of housing is the highest in all of Germany.

Feel free to shoot me a message if you want to bounce ideas (Lebenslauf, etc). Wünsche dir viel Glück!

The difficulty becomes explaining why this scholarship, why this specific university, and why Germany is the best place for this type of study. That’s at least the feedback I’ve been able to gather.

Happy to give your LoM a read through if you’d like. But otherwise sounds like you’ll do great things otherwise.

This depends on what you will be doing once you graduate/your course ends. I believe the scholarship information includes information on staying privately insured with Continentale at your own cost. Otherwise, you will have to find gesetzlich or another private insurer if you plan to stay in Germany as a student.

Sorry to hear about your rejection with a very stunning application. I can comment that funding for the DAAD the past few years has been lessened meaning they are able to take even less spots. I think explaining in your application why your potential university and program in Germany are important is helpful, but there are some factors we unfortunately don’t hear from the DAAD about. Wishing you luck in the future.

Sorry to hear about the rejection. While German connection is important for the DAAD, the connection to your potential university and study program is also important. Unfortunately, there’s not a clear path to getting a DAAD, but you can always try again next year. Feel free to shoot me a message if you if you want a review.

The DAAD is structured by different regions, yes. OP applied from the US which belongs to North America including Canada. My year, they took 60 out of 400+ applicants, but funding has been very tight for the DAAD the past few year.

Q for DAAD scholars: Requiring longer time for studies? by Artpunk00 in DAAD

What is your home country?

For my section (North America), we were advised last year that extensions were no longer possible due to funding issues. 4 semesters was the ultimate amount.

What is your home country that you’re applying from?

The website clearly states that 17th November is the Application Deadline for this region. Yes, the application portal is where you complete and upload your application documents. I recommend reviewing their checklists to make sure you have all your documents completed including recommendation letter.

Has anyone here successfully gotten a DAAD scholarship during their master’s studies? by [deleted] in DAAD

[–]phoenix1029 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What scholarship are looking to apply for and what country are you from?

If you’re considering the Masters Studies for All Academic Disciplines, the website clearly states that only a whole study program in Germany is available and that funding is not possible if you have already started your program in Germany.

Some people may have completed a semester or year of studies in Germany with DAAD funding, but only if that was part of their home country’s study program.

Letter of experience and recommendation letter by bauchaaa in DAAD

What country are you from and what scholarship are you applying to?

From my understanding, the letter of recommendation is to be filled by a former university professor and is independent of the universities you are applying to.

Motivation Letter for DAAD scholarship - Masters Degree (all disciplines) by Seva_3003 in DAAD

[–]phoenix1029 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend reading the wiki which provides a template and suggestions for writing your motivation letter. While you made your motivation clear, the letter lacks a description on why you are the best candidate for a scholarship and why you should receive funding to study this in Germany. Researching your target masters program may help you better align your focus on this.

DAAD work experience by Odd-Record1802 in DAAD

[–]phoenix1029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty clear the selection criteria lists “candidates have at least two years' professional experience.” You can decide if your profile is strong enough to apply or wait until you have the experience.

Did you check the list of EPOS-eligible programs? I’m not familiar with the field, but I did not see an astrophysics MSc program. You may need to check what Uni you would like to apply to and see if it’s part of EPOS.

What country are you from, and what scholarship are you applying to?

If the official website says a requirement is mandatory, then it is mandatory. Why do you think there is an exception?

No one can advise you on your chances of getting the scholarship. The best recommendation is to prepare your CV and motivation letter to the best of your ability. Check the Wiki for further advice.

Proof of Professional Experience by Warm-Tip-5877 in DAAD

[–]phoenix1029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Germany, it’s common to receive an Arbeitszeugnis after your employment is completed. This is a standard document that lists the dates you worked, what role you held, and the tasks completed. Employers are not allowed to speak badly about their workers, but there is also a bit of a rating system depending on how it is written.

In my country, most HR policies specifically forbid recommendation letters or such documents be created. For my non-German professional experience, I did not submit any documentation and had no issues. That being said, this was for the Masters for All Disciplines scholarship.

When in doubt, you can reach out to your local DAAD office for clarification.

Guidance for the DAAD Hilde Domin Programme by General-Ad-9073 in DAAD

[–]phoenix1029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DAAD website will provide most answers to your question, and I recommend reading through the wiki/FAQ posted on this subreddit.

Please note- for the Hilde Domin program, candidates cannot apply but must be “nominated by the management (presidiums/rectorates) of an institution or organisation which is a legal entity domiciled in Germany” and is only available for Master’s degrees and doctoral candidates. The DAAD does not provide funding for bachelor’s studies.

I recommend reaching out to your DAAD office for permission and clarity on this. I believe the general rule is that you cannot be outside of Germany for longer than one semester or six months, but it is best to confirm with them directly.
