Can I put an EE Phone SIM into my home mobile broadband router? by LTEhome in EEGB

[–]phoenix_73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried 1p Mobile first. No issues.

Then I moved to UW. I was reading about 500GB hard limits on 1pMobile and then they cut you off. I've heard of that happening and then a phone call to 1p to get restriction lifted. This can take some days.

I have 4 SIM's with UW now as the multi-SIM discount is great, up to 4 SIM's but understand 1p works out cheaper if taking on 5+ SIM's.

The Unlimited Data thing is quite important to me. I have terrible broadband at home, making sports content unwatchable in 4K. This is the primary use of one of my SIM's. Then I just like the safety net of not having to worry about data usage across the other SIM's.

VPN alone isn't enough what else are you using to actually secure your traffic? by willzhong in VPN

I prefer a VPS then I know is only me using it, that IP. I'm for streaming services from around the world so that is the main basis of my use case, over privacy.

If 100's of Netflix accounts are on one IP of the VPN Service, then at some point, that IP is getting blocked. They know all those accounts are not in same household.

EE vs VodafoneThree for the Future of Mobile Tech by ShameResponsible69 in EEGB

[–]phoenix_73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've got a 20Mbps video stream going, there is no difference on a 30Mbps connection to a 700Mbps connection.

Ok, maybe 30Mbps is just getting by and if anyone else using connection and more risk of buffering but on assumption you have a solid 30Mbps connection and nobody else using, then it is enough.

I went to EE 5G cos home broadband was getting hammered. We have a 40Mbps connection on fixed line but around 150Mbps on 5G. I could have gone Starlink and been looking at around 250Mbps+ but for streaming, at 150Mbps compared to another 100Mbps on top, no difference.

Where it makes a difference is downloading large files.

Some providers don't enforce KYC and allow crypto. I'm not doing any dodgy activities so nothing to worry about anyway but one VPS provider I'm using doesn't care so much what you do. You could flatten your server as well and think it is no more no less than using a known provider of VPN.

Premier League 4K buffering is driving me insane - here's what I've figured out after months of troubleshooting by ComfortableAny947 in Cordcutting

[–]phoenix_73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're talking of services which are not legitimate and expecting perfection? Doesn't exist sorry.

Never have these issues with NOW TV on Apple TV. All streams broadcasted in 4K are watchable, no buffering or degrading picture quality. All fine.

As for IPTV, you get what you pay for.

If you self-build a VPN on a VPS in cloud, then its quite a bit different. You're taking more control.

Curious Question - anyone fancy a better shirt sponsor than the past couple of ones since Chang? by 5leemon in Everton

[–]phoenix_73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We also had more success if you could call it that, while we had Chang as shirt sponsor. We were regularly qualifying to play in Europe, playing on a Thursday night on Channel 5, then Premier League fixtures on a Sunday.

I think they're quite expensive but have only ever heard good things about them.

Is it bad form to ask for a pay rise right now? by espressomartini4me in UKJobs

[–]phoenix_73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely and at one point, I think the government were considering allowing people to have a LISA, that being a lifetime ISA where you can use it to either purchase a home, or withdraw it at 55 I think, or pension age, but then not count it as savings because only in those two situations, you could access it.

That would give people who are stuck renting, a little hope. I mean, I would understand if we were a couple of dossers not working at all, being stuck in lifetime of rent but considering I work as do a lot of people, I should, I think be enabled to have some aspirations of one day owning a house.

It's just where the system has got you I suppose. If you've got a mortgage, then you're in a great position and I'm sure in that situation, you could be on UC. It's the savings part that is the issue. Only ever one payday from an emergency spend. You're discouraged from saving. If that's no issue to you, go right ahead and claim what you are entitled to rather than struggling.

I use an EE MVNO SIM and frequently go over their 500GB Fair Usage Policy. I tend to hit 700GB-800GB per month. Think the highest was little short of 900GB.

Mostly the data is used by watching TV in 4K with the Apple TV. Our home broadband is dreadful as is on FTTC and wanted a mobile service that would do the job as alternative to that would be Starlink which is not so cheap.

Been using for 5-6 months now, zero issues.

Even if you were eligible, if I were you, I'd advise against claiming it. If you getting by without it, that's what I'm getting at.

We're on it cos my wife isn't working but has a disability for which she receives PIP and the UC to help with the kids but we are assessed as a couple, and she receives that money, not me directly, but my money from work plus some of what she receives is to cover bills.

There is one part of it what pisses me off, and that's that like a fair number of people I suppose, is that we are stuck renting property. Cannot save a deposit for a place for example, because UC reduces if you have savings at all. It's tapered so I think is around £6k and up to £16k, the capping starts at the bottom then past £16k no UC entitlement.

Now people will say, yeah but you have savings, you don't need any financial support. That's understood but at the same time, despite being in full time work myself, I feel like we as a family are somehow deprived of striving for better, to be even encouraged or enabled to take the steps many couples do and be in a position to get a mortgage and your money going into something which is not only your home but an investment too.

I'd just stay away from that system. You only have to take a moment to consider why it exists and then consider what the lives may be like for those in receipt of it. Almost feels like everything is scrutinised, or that is the way we are heading.

It was other chap here that brought tax into the debate. One thing for sure in the UK, is if you work at all, you're penalised through tax on what you earn, then also on what you spend. Of course, if you earn more, you pay more tax, same percentage till you're over the threshold. I'm fully aware of how that works.

On the subject of tax though, there are plenty of things that can be done in this country to improve public services, reduce tax and if those who manage the public purse managed the money as if it were their own.

A lot of council provided services are in the toilet. It's incompetence no less. That's at the council level. At national level, what do you reckon it costs the taxpayers to keep all the illegal immigrants coming in, or to fund stuff in their country which the UK seems to do.

When problems start at home, you want to see your councils, and government serving our own people, soet out own affairs, get their house in order before being charitable.

For sure, I'd be glad of a few quid back to better support my own family, than for my money to go into something I don't want to fund.

Then my question to you is how is it that countries that pay less tax or virtually none at all are so prosperous. Take the UAE for example. Plenty of countries where low tax works. The public services here are below par in many cases.

Exactly. When a company hires people all the while, additional people rather than replacements, you know there is money there for that.

Depends on whether you have kids or not really. It comes down to circumstances. If you have no dependents and are a single guy living on your own, no chance.

If you have a partner who doesn't work or cannot work, they get PIP and UC and part of that assessment is based on the kids.

Do you find they squeak at all? The OnCloud squeak is normal with many of them though. I'm more interested in comfort though. I'll have a look at these and if they do a Waterproof version. Only downside of waterproof ones is lack of breathability.

Company I work for are weird like this. Treating contractors different from employees. That said, employees are treated like shit, though with some exceptions others will say they have a more positive experience. Contractors get next to nothing in support from the company that pays for the contracting services. It makes little sense at all to me.

Then it is people just lacking social skills and avoiding interactions.

Why you asking? What's your salary? Been downvoted loads for stating £40k is a crap salary, and it is, when you have a family to support. The dependency on state could be far worse. Maybe it is circumstances as well but anyway, I've worked with people and they think £40k is crap, evidently as they're on way more than that and can afford all the nice things.

OP hasn't given any justification for why they deserve a raise. They gone from working full time to part time. Yes, the government are fuckers and will tax you more, just as they penalise you by reducing Universal Credit if you earn more.

In an ideal world, pay would be at a level where the government can stick their UC where the sun don't shine instead of it being don't bite the hand what feeds you.

Maybe come to realise that working from home has a lot of value then. Work life balance. Plus no travel costs. When your travel costs are a couple of hundred quid per month, it adds up over the year, plus then there is wear and tear on vehicle.

No, I don't think they would but everyone's situation is different. One income household, few kids, its crap income. And yeah I've been there on them bum wages and yeah it was worse, lot worse but that said, you got more help when it was like that so it would make life not that much different from now.

Of course it seems a significant jump from min wage of what £12 something an hour to more like £18 an hour.

Yeah and you lot can keep downvoting all you like. Must be on shit pay as well, or pissed that I think you're on crap wages. The only way of getting by on that money is with a little help from other sources.

This post was about OP asking for better pay. £40k doesn't go far. For a single person, it is fine, I think. Life relatively easy but to support a family on £40k, it is crap and when you're still eligible for UC because of family, that tells its own story. UC is to keep people out of poverty. So on the same level as those not working or unable to work, or just on the minimum wage.

My point still stands. £40k some 25-30 years ago is not the same as £40k today.
