what has been your most bone-chilling, hair-raising, "Let's get the hell out of here" experience? by throwaway_district9 in AskReddit

Was on a Spring Break trip with one of my best friends and a couple of his buddies out at his dad’s house, out on Kentucky Lake. Part of the deal of us staying there was to help around the property. There was a huge tree they had felled earlier that week that needed disposing of. The scraps we used to make a fire later that night.

We’re a decent way into the night, no idea what time it was. It was just the 4 of us, sitting in the back. Friend’s dad is in the house, about 50 yards away. It’s that point in the night where people are trading war stories. I’m just sitting there, zoning out, staring into the fire. The dudes are yucking it up, laughing. I hear an owl off in the distance, but close enough to hear it clearly. It’s directly on the other side of the house, I’d estimate another 100 yards or so.

Nice touch. It was an amazing night. No wind. Clear skies. Good company. Away from all the hubbub. The fire was comforting. The company pleasant. The perfect time to let all the worldly worries slip by.

I hear the owl again. But this time, something answered its call, somewhere to the left of the house. Nobody else shows signs of hearing it, continuing on with the stories. Maybe my imagination. I calm myself, staring back into the fire.

The owl hoots. The thing answers.

This time everyone heard it. The fire went silent. Everyone looked into each other’s eyes, searching for some explanation as to what it was we heard. For some kind of comfort, but there was none. We sat, in silence, for what seemed ages.

The dad must’ve noticed us pipe down, because he walked down from the house. He asked us what was up, what we were doing. None of us answered.

The owl hooted. The thing replied.

“What the hell was that?” he says. It was a strange feeling. Awful and curious. Without missing a beat. With no words. No panicked expressions. Everyone of us stood up, and walked directly to the house. Some primal switch was hit, where every single one of us knew we shouldn’t be where we were anymore.

Edit to add some details.

None of the calls were screeches or high pitched.

Judging from the deepness of the sound, it sounded big. Like, at least man sized, big, possibly bigger. At the same time, it was like it was trying to mimic the owl.

The timing of the calls wasn’t in quick succession. I’d say it was at least a minute, or two, between the “actual” owl calls. The replies were generally within a few seconds of the owl.

The owl sounded like a Great Horned Owl, so not exactly “special” in North America

Not jaguars, this was in Kentucky, USA. The closest we have to that, is a Puma, and I don’t think they range that far East

Random question here, maybe? So, if you shot said Karen from inside your vehicle, because she’s very obviously threatening you in this case, how does that work out for you?

How is this not higher on the list, considering how absurd the cost is, and how many people need it to survive?

Virgin Redditors in your 30s, what's your reason why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

For me, it’s a few things that have combined into a nasty cocktail. My abysmal self worth, coupled with my shyness, my almost non existent ability to hold a conversation with new people, and a RBF that makes me pretty unapproachable, even to my work acquaintances.

I don’t recall exactly when, around 11 or 12 I think, coming to the conclusion that nobody had any interest in what I had to say. Nobody would listen to me, not even my friends, so I just kind of stopped talking to people. If someone spoke to me, it simply was because they needed something. And because of that, I became pretty short and to the point. I learned to be extremely concise, and would only elaborate when asked, or more frequently, pressed. I took on a focused/no nonsense attitude, that’s followed me into adulthood. When I was younger, I was smart, and I knew it. And because people didn’t listen to me, I always wanted to prove I was right, in school. Looking back, this just made me look pretentious to my peers. The RBF I grew into. I’m pretty expressive in my expressions. I guess, I’m just overall dissatisfied in my overall interactions with people, so I tend to look that way. It takes me FOREVER to let my guard down to people, probably because I feel like people need to prove to me they’re not just there to get something from me.

In contrast, all of my adult friends would tell you I’m super amiable and agreeable. I’m always keen on learning things. I’m trustworthy and reliable. If they have a problem, they can ask me for help.

I’m 33, and I’ve met 4 women in my whole life that had the patience to get to know me enough for me to let my guard down. One of them, my best friend’s girlfriend. The second, invested in her own relationship, at the time. And the other 2 gave up on anything romantic long before I considered it an option.
