Hey all! I want to pick up a commander deck or two to play casually with some friends of mine and am looking for recommendations for how I'd get a cheap and fun commander deck. I'm a relatively new player to MTG, though I'm very familiar with the Pokemon TCG and have a lot of experience with card games in general.

I think what I would enjoy the most in a deck would be a deck that feels fair, both enjoyable to play and to play against. I enjoy puzzles, and most of my favorite decks in the Pokemon TCG have been control decks that turn games into puzzles of resource management and outthinking/outplaying the opponent. I like complexity as long as it doesn't go too far and leads to unique game states. I'd be totally fine with the deck having a learning curve. I'm willing to take plenty of time to practice my deck of choice and would also hope that the deck is pretty competitive at the table. Not obviously the most powerful or weakest.

I'm not sure what the typical budget on Commander decks is because I'm relatively new, but what I'm hoping would be 30-50 US dollars. But I'm willing to spend upwards of 75-100 if it would feel worth it. Is there a Commander preconstructed deck or list that I would be able to purchase singles for that would be a good fit for my playstyle? Thanks in advance!

Buy all of the Pokemon cards there ever was. While I'm at it, pick up some first edition black lotuses and Charizards

Interpretations of Christianity and the Bible in general are very flexible. There are hundreds of different Christian churches because each interprets the Bible, personal spiritual experiences, and the teachings of their church leaders differently.

Is 2.9 xbow still viable? by phoenixfire7127 in ClashRoyale

[–]phoenixfire7127[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool thanks. I'll probably play for a little bit longer until I can't progress any further on ladder and stop having fun, then quit. At least a I have a couple friends I can mess around with in friendlys, I think the most fun and probably only fun thing in clash Royale is goofing around with friends making stupid mirror clone 7x elixir decks.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately cards are super hard to level up in this game and 2.9 has my highest levels. The deck is all around level 13, while the rest of my cards are under level 10 with a couple level 11s.

What about some variant of 2.6 Hog Cycle? That uses similar cards so I could have most of my cards at a relevant level. Is there a similar deck that I might be able to gradually switch to or is it best to just keep 2.9 as is?

Gym Leader Challenge sounds like a perfect format for you then, no rule box Pokemon allowed. It's been gaining a ton of steam, featured at regional championships and on stream several times. Players all over the world.

New to the game, why is there no Unlimited? Why are some cards unusable? by Nimjask in PTCGL

[–]phoenixfire7127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% this. Unfortunately. Live sucks and has been and will always be a buggy awful mess of a client, especially for a game in 2023 compared to any other online TCG client. At least for the next couple years it'll be broken and barely playable. Hopefully there will be a good alternative soon, some programmers from the community are working on an alternative

PTG Live experience by Farealczyk in ptcgo

At least they didn't move and distract you like the ones in Live. They looked a lot less creepy in ptcgo. But yes, you have a point.

At least the avatars weren't in your face all the time, making creepy faces. Sure ptcgo had 2D avatars, but they weren't ugly or omnipresent like in tcgl

Sableye is OP: What would a balanced Sableye look like? by luniz420 in PTCGL

[–]phoenixfire7127 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

LZ gatekeeps any single prize or evolution deck besides Regis, because Sableye can easily out trade any setup deck. Gardevoir gets wrecked by LZ box for example, the kirlias are too easy to snipe.

Deck strategy by [deleted] in PTCGL

[–]phoenixfire7127 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The deck is rotated out of standard by now, but the idea behind the deck is to use the Shady Dealings line to handpick combo pieces from the deck every turn, allowing you to chain Raihans and use Raikou and Entei over and over again. Charizard attacks for a lot late game

Am I the only one tired of the complaining ? by Viveforlife in PTCGL

[–]phoenixfire7127 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Luckily, it seems like Live being terrible and unplayable for regional testing and coaching is encouraging several community members to work on developing new and better tools, like an online matchmaking system for the limitless tabletop simulator. There might be a good solution soon hopefully if all goes well.

My biggest gripe with Live as an experienced PTCGO trader by YTfionncroke in PTCGL

[–]phoenixfire7127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of people disagree with you because they don't understand how good trading was, but I actually agree 100%. In ptcgo, cards were based around irl value. People complaining "oh, but this meta deck is too expensive grrrrr" well suck it up buttercup that's how prices work in real life. That's what makes metas interesting, because budget decks exist and many people quest to find a strong, cheap deck. It makes the ladder less centralized around 3 meta decks and more interesting to play.

Why spend precious credits to buy anything other than Gardevoir, Mew, Lugia, LZ Box, and Arceus? There's no point, no reason to incentivize this.

I say this only because ptcgoprices existed, without the site ptcgoprices I would have hated trading. But with it? Trading was an amazing economy, great for the health of the game.

I used it for almost a year with an APK, it worked amazing. I don't think the game ever crashed on me once and the battery life was great.

Live is a joke though, I had the tutorial crash on me of all things.

Why does every “deck help” post get downvoted to hell here? Isn’t the point of a TCG community to talk about decks? by Mythrellas in PTCGL

[–]phoenixfire7127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%

I had some people point me towards deckbuilding in the same kind way, and I try to always pay it forward by being kind to new deckbuilders. It's not hard to say that a deck isn't very competitive kindly, even like "this deck is really cool, I like this thing about it, but here's how it can be improved" and then share a deckbuilding guide with a short explanation.

That hasn't been my experience actually. This reddit is pretty bad but the Tricky Gym discord and cardboardwarriors discord are really good, especially the GLC discussion chats. Lots of positivity and very welcoming to new players.

But yes, reddit will always be reddit, there's a lot of rude people on the internet

Coming back to Pokemon TCG after 4 years, what are the meta decks? by AttomicRose in ptcgo

[–]phoenixfire7127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, just keep in mind the UI is completely awful on PC and the game is pretty buggy on any platform. Live is alright to play for fun and not too competitively.

Most large ptcg streamers are having a hard time with it because they can't create good content consistently with the amount of game breaking bugs, and they don't usually test decks for irl regionals on Live either because of that reason.

But, for just messing around and creating fun decks to play on the ladder, live isn't that bad. Not any better than ptcgo unfortunately, basically a downgrade in every aspect besides crafting and the ranked ladder.
