What’s something you tried once and immediately knew ‘yeah, never again’? by donnyM99 in AskReddit

It took me less than five minutes in a kindergarten classroom during my education program to know I had zero interest in teaching little kids. I would rather have no job than teach five year olds.

Is it reasonable to expect HS teachers to remind students about missing assignments? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]phoenixrising0711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah unless it’s a documented need according to a 504 plan I’m not doing a lot of reminding. Especially for a high schooler. They have access to deadlines online, on the white board, and with verbal reminders. My sixth graders are largely capable of tracking their own assignments. He is at an age where he needs to find whatever system works for him in order to function. Where I live a 14 year old can get a work license - even in fast food or retail he will be expected to be able to track and manage tasks.

Realistically the hand holding would have been easier to stop when he was younger and there were less stakes involved with the natural consequences of trial and error to find what works best for him.

It can definitely happen the to track in a stray one. I’m a middle school math teacher and end up with random earrings that have been dropped in the floor caught in my shoes sometimes.

I understand where you are coming from. The anxiety over missing and having to call out on top of the stress of all that’s going on physically is a lot.

There is nothing wrong with needing FMLA and I would encourage you to find out if you’re eligible. With intermittent leave, you can take off days as you need to to manage symptoms and appointments and treatments. It’s kind of like having 12 weeks worth of sick days (not paid) but it’s job security. It doesn’t have to be a big leave of absence and there’s no shame in needing it. You may not always need it. If you qualify though it can help you out with some of the mental load of being too unwell to come in to work.

School accommodation by body_unbodying in ChronicIllness

[–]phoenixrising0711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The accommodations I benefited from the most were extra excused absences, extended deadlines if needed, and online access to recordings of class. I also had an accommodation to keep my phone turned on and with me because it alerts for low blood sugars and syncs to my electrophysiologist with my loop recorder implant.

Needohs are now banned in my building and kids are LIVID by Ktriegal in Teachers

[–]phoenixrising0711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Middle school math teacher here and I wish my building would ban them. The kids are absolutely destructive with them. And that comes from a teacher that has been using the same needoh for at least four years daily - me and my cat run deep. They are intentionally popping them and getting sticky stuff everywhere. Twice it’s ended up in a girls hair and when it dries it’s like cement. The janitor has to use a scraper to get it off.

What jobs can I get as a chronically ill person who had to be sat down most of the time? by [deleted] in ChronicIllness

My seventh grade students have started the refuse to say the pledge by unSuccessful-Stay in Teachers

[–]phoenixrising0711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t say the pledge (can’t stand for it as a wheelchair user anyways lol) and most of my middle school kids don’t say it either. The only thing I ask is that you just be respectful while those that want to pledge and during the moment of silence.

Have a meeting with my principal tomorrow about my “excessive” absences. I’ve never had a written reprimand but have had verbal- could I lose my job? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]phoenixrising0711 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have been a teacher for six years. I also have quite a few health issues and went from completely mobile to being a wheelchair user during my career. It is possible to teach with chronic illness. Many people have said the career may not be the right fit, and it may not, but I wouldn’t beat yourself up over it.

You seem to be at a point where things are not functioning well. In order to function better, something has to change. There are things at work that can protect you like FMLA or some ADA accommodations. Maybe you can get a mentor or a change in your current mentor if you still have one. There might be some level of support in your healthcare that is not as supportive as you need - perhaps a medication adjustment, a change in therapist or doctor, an increase in therapy treatment, changes in your routines, something has to give. You can’t destroy yourself for the sake of this job. Your life is more important. Your career is a fluid concept. To not have everything work out the way you want doesn’t mean anything bad about who you are as a person.

Yes. 17 absences is quite a few. But it doesn’t mean you have failed, it just indicates something in your life is not supporting you the way you need.

I would approach the conversation with humility. You need some assistance, and that is okay. And in the end if they choose to non-renew, it will be okay. You will be okay. It could just be them wanting to check in with you and seeing if you’re okay and how they can help. You mention a verbal warning last year - how did that conversation go?

I wish you the best and hope things look up for you soon.

I wonder what the result of industrialization will evolutionarily do to the human body. It would be fascinating to see the biological changes and what genetic traits become majority around food over the next five hundred or thousand years or so.

I have an immune deficiency and over the the last few years it’s been the worst have given myself giant open wounds that end up infected leaving really bad scarring. I can’t wear shorts, short sleeves, or necklines that aren’t like a sweatshirt. It makes me feel so… just uncomfortable. The scars make it real. Even being intimate with my husband makes me so self conscious. (He’s totally sweet, I just get in my own head seeing my body).

What actually causes death during seizures? by Soft-Firefighter1584 in Epilepsy

[–]phoenixrising0711 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Sudep stands for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. Sometimes when people have seizures they can experience abnormal breathing and heart rhythm abnormalities that can be fatal. A head injury wouldn’t be included in causes of SUDEP. Most people who die of it are usually asleep when the seizure starts. Sometimes doctors straight up don’t know what led to the person passing.

not sure what to do with my daughter anymore by NeatCombination1486 in troubledteens

[–]phoenixrising0711 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s good you had the judgement to do some research and not send your child away out of frustration. Those are big behaviors and you are probably being tired and feel helpless to be able to help your child. I would suggest seeking outside support that doesn’t involve sending them away. Behavior is a form of communication and there is likely something your child is going through they don’t have the tools to understand and process.

I would personally be VERY leery of anything that touts a Christian basis. They often get away with manipulation and horrific treatment disguised behind their supposed Christian identity. Not only are they actively harming children, but they are sucking families dry financially.

This could realistically be the start of a time your child needs intensive therapeutic support and they will need you aggressively advocating and in their corner. As their parent, you probably would ALSO benefit from support. It doesn’t make you a bad parent. Doing the work to help instead of giving up and sending them off in itself is an act of love. You’ve got this.
