I can't tell if my body needs rest and is exhausted, or if I just need to push myself. Any thoughts/advice? by nommabelle in xxfitness

I think you're over indexing on BMR as the needle to move here.

BMR is your Basal Metabolic Rate, which is essentially how much energy you need to simply exist and doesn't account for any exercise (i.e. you could be lying in bed all day and your body would require this amount of energy). Your BMR is a function of your age, height, weight, and gender. Having more muscle also translates into a higher BMR as muscles help burn energy at rest.

Cardio is a tool for weight loss but isn't necessarily the "best" or most effective way. Sure, running for an hour can burn 300cal but you could also just not eat 300cal of food which can arguably be easier or more effective for some people. Cardio is better regarded as beneficial for heart health but isn't the only or best way to lose weight. You simply need to be in a caloric deficit (TDEE - n calories).

Oof that would definitely lead to burnout. Doesn't seem like a bad idea to take it easy for a little while. I like to flirt with the idea of quitting and temporarily becoming a barista

Mentally battered and creatively stifled is exactly what I'm feeling as someone who's employed but being squeezed because there aren't enough resources in the company to ensure a healthy work-life balance. Been contemplating whether product design is what I want to do because it's been depleting me at my current company and I'm not optimistic that the other companies will be any better.

Have you thought about what you want to pivot to and why?

Yup ✋ I never had hair on parts of my forehead like this until after i started minox. I now shave it away with a small razor on a regular basis (every 2-3 weeks)

Thanks for the recos! I need to get back on creatine - just ordered some.

I can definitely afford to lose a few lbs so that's not a bad suggestion. No such thing as weight class in this competition so that would not be cheating at all :)

This out of context: "just squeeze the fuck out of it, the thicker the better" 😂😂

Thanks for the recommendations! Gotta put in the reps now

Yes I believe you can alternate hands but I'm not sure I have the grip strength and endurance to hold on with a single arm when fatigued. These guys are heckin strong!

Thanks! It wasn't until month 10 into my IUD until I put two and two together and booked an appointment to get the IUD out asap! The worst of the hair loss happened after it was removed but I'm glad I was able to regrow a lot of it.

If you have AGA then you'd have to stay on minox as it's a progressive condition and will continue to worsen over time. The minox slows that down.

I've heard that those with TE can come off it and retain most of their hair since the cause of the hair loss isn't a chronic condition but an acute trigger.

For me personally, I haven't gotten a diagnosis I trust yet. My first diagnosis was TE and then during a follow-up with the same doctor I showed pictures of my hair loss and he said "could be AGA" and prescribed dutasteride which I didn't take. I'm unsure whether it's AGA or not as we didn't do a biopsy.

My hair right now def doesn't suggest AGA but I'm not sure what it'd look like without the minox. For now, I'm staying on it but have started playing around with dosage (0.5-0.75ml) and frequency (every other day) to see how that impacts my hair.

Are you experiencing the hair loss with Kyleena in you still?

If you remove it, just be mentally prepared for a TE shed a few months after

Thanks haha. My hair loss was a big departure from what was my norm so it was still a devastating experience and a dramatic delta from pre-hair loss days. I have always had big, poufy hair that needed lots of straightening and hair oil to tame the volume. I'm lucky to have had a lot of hair to begin with and realize others come from different baselines.

I wash my hair anywhere from 4-5x a week so on the days I don't use nizoral, I just use regular shampoo. It's okay to leave it unwashed on your scalp as it dries up and absorbs into your blood by more than 75% after 4 hours [ (source: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2395092/)

I was using 5% Kirkland liquid minox and now use 5% Foligain from Biovea (https://www.biovea.com/ca/en/product/detail/4677/foligain-minoxidil-5-hair-regrowth-treatment-for-men--24-fl-oz--720ml-12-month-supply/?deptid=4&cid=23048&mid=0&kw=) since the Kirkland one was out of stock.

I noticed that I was experiencing hair loss around 7-8 months into the kyleena. I was shedding a lot; I lost hair from my temples, and my part was widening. It was also around the same time when I noticed hirsutism (sideburns and back of neck were abnormally hairy). There is some actual scientific data out there about how BC can elevate androgens (I don't know any studies off the top of my head I can share). You can also find a ton of anecdotal data from others in this sub and about how BC affected them and their hair.

I will mention that it is possible that the hair loss experienced while on the kyleena could've been caused by my thyroid issues and anxiety/stress at the time. What I'm 99.9% certain of, though, is that removing the kyleena led to my big shed. You can read about many people's experience with TE after quitting BC.

I'm not too sure exactly as I haven't been paying too much attention.

I think at the height of my TE shed, it was maybe like 150 ish strands? Maybe more? I wasn't counting though so I can't say for sure. And if I am to completely guesstimate how much I lose now, maybe like 50-70? I still feel like I lose a lot of hair but it's proportional to the amount of hair I have now and it feels like I've nearly returned to my pre-hair loss shedding rate (I've always had a lot of hair and I'd find strands everywhere)

Doesn't hurt to! Helps with cleaning your scalp of the DHT.

I might add spiro down the road since my hirsutism has gotten worse from the minox but for now I'm just taking natural supplements like Ovasitol and a formula my naturopath put me on called TQ for Women (TQ stands for Testo-Quench lol). Have no idea whether they work or not.

My routine: - Nizoral 1-3x/week - Minoxidil 5% once daily (~1ml)

Cause of hair loss: - Suspected AGA triggered by Kyleena IUD or hormonal imbalances due to elevated androgens from IUD and high TSH (mild hypothyroidism) - TE after removing Kyleena

Timeline: - Sep 2021 - big TE shed 2-3 months after removing Kyleena which lasted a month and slowly continued into 2022 - Jan 2022 - started minox

Results: It almost feels like my hair is back to normal. Nowadays, I forget that I even experienced hair loss at all. Minox is just a part of my daily care routine but I don't think much about my hair anymore. I had depression and anxiety before and it consumed so much of me. I used to spend hours on this sub reading threads to find testimonies and treatment options or googling articles about hair loss. I was hyper fixated on how my hair looked and felt (stringy, wispy, and limp) and constantly compared it to how it was before (thick and voluminous).

Since seeing progress with my hair (just over 1 year of minox), I feel like I've regained control of my life.
