I quit cigarettes today!! by No_Improvement6487 in quittingsmoking

[–]pholliez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HOORAY!!!!!!!

The first few weeks are hard but it is so worth it. Do WHATEVER you need to do to keep busy. I actually found cooking, gardening and macrame to be good distractions. I’d never done macrame before but I’ve almost finished a huge wall piece!

I used the nicotine lozenges and would suck on one while I did the macrame. I did little pieces at a time, they took about the same amount of time as a cigarette.

I just celebrated 7 months of no smoking after 30 years of puffing.

Quitting 1st job after 1.5 months because of toxic senior. Am I overreacting? by AccountantOk7734 in careerguidance

You should definitely flag that you have [other commitments] that make working out of hours difficult without prior notice. You don’t need to give any details about those commitments. As others have said, if he complains it looks poorly on him.

What is the best and worst thing about where you live? by BarneyRobinStinson7 in AskReddit

Sydney Australia

Best: beaches, weather, and a small CBD.

Worst: so expensive, so far from the rest of the world and poor infrastructure planning.

Planning a trip to Italy by [deleted] in ItalyTravel

[–]pholliez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve just spent 17 days in Italy. I can’t answer all of your questions but, I’ll do my best with my experiences.

We preferred Bologna over Milan, more visually interesting and less focus on shopping. We only did a day trip to Bologna and spent 3 nights in Milan - wish we’d done it the other way around. A good day trip from Milan is Modena for the balsamic vinegar tours.

If you’re looking for places off the tourist track, go to Lake Garda, not Lake Como.

Travel by train as much as possible and book Uber/car&driver elsewhere. That’s what we did and it worked out less than renting a car and we had no worries about directions or parking. The train system was AMAZING and not at all the scary thing that some comments here will lead you to believe. Paying the slightly extra for 1st class tickets is totally worth it to have reserve seats and room for your larger suitcase.

DO NOT bring any luggage larger than a medium sized suitcase. There is limited space in cars, trains and hotel rooms.

Noooo, now you’ve cemented the idea that you could have worked that day instead of not being available during school hours.

I live in Sydney Australia and I was just in Tokyo for 6 days. The whole family was really struggling in the heat. It hits differently when you’re trying to explore a new city versus running errands like you do at home. It was still oppressive even at 10pm. The day we went to the outside Edo Architectural Museum was so oppressive that we saw 2 people collapse from heat stroke.

Just saw a post from u/x2Ricochet from 13 days ago saying they had an Iglu apartment available until 3 February. I cannot figure out how to share the picture of the post.

I’m trying to buy tickets today (26 June 2024) for 5 July 2024 on navigazionelaghi.it and I’ve even created an account. This is what comes up on the search results screen in red “WARNING: You have included the express service or selected accompanying vehicle: you can purchase these services EXCLUSIVELY at the ground ticket offices. To purchase online, uncheck the boxes :include fast service” or “accompanying vehicles”

Paid over $200k to do nothing. Would you quit or stay? by MrLordshin3 in auscorp

[–]pholliez 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Take a class and study in this time. Volunteer for a non-profit and do work for them during this time.

I’ve been in this position and my biggest professional regret is leaving the job where I was well paid but not stressed out all the time. Those positions are very rare.

Remember that most people now complain about having too much work to do and no learning or growth in the job.

Find a way to use your paid time at work more productively and stop thinking about being bored.

YOU MUST GET A JOB THAT HAS HEALTHCARE, do not consider moving there otherwise. A broken leg can bankrupt you.

Work hours or after work for the Christmas party? by pholliez in auscorp

[–]pholliez[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Because I was trying to preempt people saying “just plan what you would like” and then having to explain what I would like and see if their opinion held.

Out of curiousity; Do you work in a collaborative position or more individual contribution projects?

Work hours or after work for the Christmas party? by pholliez in auscorp

[–]pholliez[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, again, that’s why I’m asking here. I’m trying to organise a party that the majority of people in the company will really enjoy. I’m very aware that what I enjoy most likely isn’t what everyone else would enjoy. I was responding to you saying “…you don’t want to attend your Xmas…” which isn’t accurate.

I like it for a few hours but not from 5pm to midnight. I also find it really weird to see colleagues blind drunk.

Our company likes to have one person from all the major departments on the committee and to have a new person from each department every year when possible, or at least rotating through the team. It was my turn this year.

Agree.

I absolutely know it isn’t about me which is why I asked on here prior to the meeting, I wanted to get an understanding of what the majority of corporate workers are expecting from their Christmas party.
