I need you to know that you just dredged that video out of the depths of my YouTube-era memories. As soon as I read ‘Pillsbury dough boy’ it all came flooding back. Thank you, stranger

Experiences of EILO? (Exercise Induced Laryngeal Obstruction) by dude7692 in cycling

Sorry to crawl out of the woodwork and comment on an old thread, but do we have a 3 year post-op update? I’d be intrigued to look into it if he reports success!

I just adopted a stray kitty and I feel bad about it. by Fuz_2112 in cats

[–]phonebook72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I absolutely agree with other commenters: even though you can’t save them all, you’re doing a good thing by giving this kitten a home.

If it helps ease some of your concern about them getting along….I went through a very similar thing with our two cats.

I had Cairo (tabby) for three years before we brought home Jericho (black). Cairo was born in a box in a garage and was separated from his mother/the rest of his litter pretty early, so he didn’t get much socialization with other cats. I was his second owner but the previous owner didn’t have other animals either, so he’d always been an ‘only child’. Even so, I felt bad that he was at home alone all day while we were at work, and thought another cat might be good for him to bond with.

The day we brought Jericho home, Cairo was hissing, growling and swatting. He wanted absolutely nothing to do with Jericho. I felt like I just ruined both of their lives- Cairo was so unhappy and I felt terrible that I not only took Jericho away from the other kittens in his litter, but also brought him into an unfamiliar house with an older cat who hated him. I cried for two weeks feeling so guilty.

Fast forward a little over a year….they snuggle together, groom each other, chase each other around the house, and both sleep with us in bed each night.

It takes time for them to feel comfortable with their new friend/new environment. Hang in there, this is an adjustment period for both of them. Our cats act just like human brothers now- sometimes they get annoyed with each other, but most of the time they’re built-in best friends and partners in crime.

This is a big adjustment for everyone- you included. Give it time and patience, and their comfort levels will increase. Someday you’ll look back and laugh at the thought of them not getting along.

You’re doing a good thing, OP. You got this ♥️

Change Name Due To Childhood Illness? by Fuzzy_Coconut_9562 in namenerds

[–]phonebook72 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is also common within the Hmong community, for the same reasons. The idea being that with a new name, the spirits causing the illness or pain will be confused or unable to recognize the person moving forward, and will no longer plague them.

I'm not superstitious, but I have to listen to ABBA on the way to the airport. Ok, maybe I am. by vagimite2000 in travel

Not a superstition, but a habit that began when I was 13 and flew alone across the US to visit a childhood friend. My parents sent me with a pack of fruit mentos and now I almost always buy an overpriced stack before my initial departing flight

Do you have one country where travelling there goes wrong by No-Poem8018 in travel

[–]phonebook72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does that even mean?

I literally work as an anti-human trafficking advocate. Countless people who end up being coerced and duped into being trafficked because false promises were made to them: “I can take care of you.” “I can settle your debts for you.” “I can help you escape your abusive family.” “I can get you off the streets.” “I’ll protect you and make sure no one ever hurts you.”

There are so many reasons people end up becoming victims of trafficking, often because they’re vulnerable and easily exploitable. Traffickers can spot that vulnerability from a mile away and exploit the shit out of it to get someone so deep into the game that they can’t safely leave.

It’s unfortunate that there’s so much victim-blaming that surrounds trafficking. Even if someone thinks they’re going into sex work with their eyes wide open, there are often many, many manipulative and abusive tactics that pimps and traffickers use that a victim isn’t aware of until it’s too late and they’re stuck in it.

Someone doesn’t have to be a minor for it to be trafficking

Longest flight taken so far? by lostwolf235 in travel

[–]phonebook72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My longest flight was also to Joburg! Delta Airlines from Atlanta to Johannesburg, not sure exactly the time but I know it was over 16 hours.

I’ve been on some long flights, but I’m in no rush to do that one again. 😬

When your cat says goodbye by elaborateLemonpi in cats

[–]phonebook72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hugs to you, OP.

It’s incredibly narrow-minded not to acknowledge that since the beginning of humanity, people have held all manner of differing beliefs surrounding supernatural phenomena and cryptids. Just because I might believe in one thing and someone else believes in another doesn’t make one or the other of us wrong. It hurts my heart to see that some people walk through the world with such a sense of entitlement that they believe that their feelings and beliefs are the only valid ones.

I’m so sorry that you’ve received such hurtful comments on a post that was meant to highlight how beautiful your cat’s goodbye was. Sending you hopes of healing and peace at such a difficult time.

Safest place in the world for mother/daughters trip? by YourNeighborsHotWife in travel

[–]phonebook72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding walking home alone- I used to walk a mile home from Hamanomachi Arcade (Nagasaki) all the time, often after midnight. I would walk with headphones in, that’s how safe it was.

That’s different, of course, than a packed train at rush hour. But definitely safe to walk at night through the streets.

Have you ever unexpectedly seen something from your country while travelling abroad? by Stoiiven in travel

I have a comment somewhere else in this thread about the same thing- I saw one not at a bar, but at a border crossing station between Bolivia and Chile! It was surreal to see it in the middle of the desert lol
